Overarching Conceptual Model• Interventions will lead to changes in

knowledge and psychosocial factors that mediate or moderate:hazard reductions & behavior change– We focus particularly on improved social support

and reduced job stress, that will in turn produce:• hazard reductions• safer work behaviors• improved lifestyle choices• better psychological and physical health

TWH Interventions aimed at HP + OSH risk factors & outcomes

Oregon Healthy Workforce CenterTheme: Intervention Effectiveness (RCTs)• Team-based TWH intervention in home care workers

• Team-based TWH intervention in corrections officers

• “ work-life balance+safety in city construction wkrs

• commercial construction wkrs

• Talking Safety + social media in young workers –City parks & recreation department

Intervention MethodsIntervention Impact point

– Organization– Supervisor– Employee

Methods• Education/training

– Computer-based– In person (facillitated)– Scripted, Team-based

• Team processes• Incentives for participation• Practice & goal setting

Hammer - city construction

Anger – private construction

Kuehl –corrections workers

Olson – home care workers

Critical Results/Interventions• Team Effectiveness training + safety and

emotional support training + practice:– improved HP variables (diastolic BP)– improved safety outcomes

• Team processes using scripted trainingin Home Care Workers:– reduced sugary drinks– increased good cholesterol– increased safety behaviors

(tool use vs. lifting)

Critical Results/Interventions• Corrections: Highest WC claims and

absenteeism rates of state employees– Improved diastolic BP– increased eating fruits and vegetables– reduced total cholesterol and percent fat

• Young worker project: Over 220 P&R have taken NIOSH’s Talking Safety converted to computer-based training – they liked it, learned from it, and recommendedthat others take it

Effectiveness of Total Worker Health Interventions

• HP & OSH intervention + HP & OSH measures• 17 published studies met criteria• 16 improved risk factors for injuries/chronic

illnesses; 4 improved 10 or more risk factors• Several reported sustained improvements

> 1 year• 1 available for dissemination• While some described integrated programs, in

their methods sections, none reportedmetrics or evidence of integrationof HP & OSH interventions

Education• Summer Institute on

Occupational Health Psychology• National Corrections Conference (1st)• Summer Intern program• Chalk Talks

Page 9: Oregon Healthy WorkForce Center - The Eagleson Institute › content › confrences › TWH2014... · Oregon Healthy WorkForce Center Kent Anger (Director) Leslie Hammer (Associate

Outreach• Resource Directory and Call-in line• Exhibits at Oregon OSHA conferences• Partnerships with WC Insurance companies,

societies to teach about TWH• Sponsorship of large TWH meetings• Partner’s Luncheons• Blog and Social Media

Challenges• Defining TWH• Keeping up with private industry as they

implement HP and sometimes TWH• Identifying the right populations to study – how

do you do controls• Safety is about rules and HP is about doing

fun things• An effective model for broad dissemination

Page 11: Oregon Healthy WorkForce Center - The Eagleson Institute › content › confrences › TWH2014... · Oregon Healthy WorkForce Center Kent Anger (Director) Leslie Hammer (Associate

Gaps• Evidence that integration is important• Toolkits available for dissemination• An effective model for broad dissemination of

evidence-based programs• D&T research

Conclusions• Team processes are effective at producing

workplace change - attend

• Promise of simultaneous improvements in safety, health and well-being leads to call for TWH research to identify / disseminate best practices – see our OHWC exhibit
