DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST,

DONUT MINISTRY NEEDS YOU

The Donut Ministry is searching for a few volunteers to help coordinate donuts and coffee at the 9AM Masses once every 2 months. Responsibilities include: Picking up and paying for the donuts from Raley’s (a standing order is submitted), all expenses are reimbursed by St. Dominic’s. Pick up prior to 8:30AM. Prepare coffee before Mass, set out donuts and napkins. After Mass pour Tang for kids and restock napkins. CATHOLIC APPEAL GUEST SPEAKER SERIES

THE CATHOLIC TEACHING ABOUT THE HUMAN SOUL

BY FR. JOHN THOMAS MELLEIN

"What is man that you keep him in mind, mortal man that you care for him?" (Psalm 8:5) With these words the psalmist expresses wonder at the mystery of what it means to be human. At the heart of the mystery are the following questions: What is the soul? How is the soul related to the human body? What happens to the soul after death? Fr. John Thomas will address these questions drawing upon the philosophical ideas of Plato, Aristotle, and Thomas Aquinas in the context of the Church’s teaching on the immortality of the soul and the resurrection of the body. TUESDAY, July 8

th at 9AM in the Church and 7PM in

the Parish Hall.

MYSTICAL UNION & CONTEMPLATION, BASIC PRINCIPLES & PRACTICAL STEPS WITH FR. BERNHARD BLANKENHORN O.P.

Saints speak of their encounters with God and experience of mystical union through contemplation. But what is mystical union? How do the saints approach prayer and contemplation as a path to union with God? Drawing on the wisdom of the ancient desert hermits, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Teresa of Avila, learn the basic principles to understand mystical union and contemplation. A second evening will focus on practical insights on how prayer and contemplation can become effective ways towards union with God.

ADORATION MOST HOLY ROSARY

The Rosary Confraternity is a world-wide prayer movement going on for over 500 years.

The Rosary Confraternity is a spiritual association (of the Catholic Church), the members of which strive to pray the entire Rosary during the course of each week. They form a union of countless hundreds of thousands of the faithful throughout the world who, along with their own intentions, include the intentions and needs of all its members, while they in turn pray for them. The Rosary has been entrusted to the Dominican Friars in order to promote the contemplation of Christ’s life, death and resurrection. Members are encouraged to pray the rosary at least three times a week for their own benefit and the benefit of the Body of Christ. http://www.rosary-center.org/nroscon.htm Since the Holy Father has recently added the five luminous mysteries, we encourage members of the Confraternity to include that extra weekly Rosary. However, we have as yet received no official statement regarding this matter. Those who recite only the fifteen traditional mysteries will continue to share in the benefits of the Confraternity until some official source declares the contrary. Start today!

We welcome Ms. Katie Perata Principal of St. Dominic School! Ms. Perata is a proven teacher and leader in Catholic Education. For the past five years Katie has been an educator at Queen of All Saints School in Concord, having served as a teacher, a leader of curriculum, and an advocate for Catholic Schools. In addition, Ms. Perata has played an integral part on her school's leadership team, assisting in the creation and implementation of special programs to raise student achievement, while striving to promote student success and excellence. SDS currently has openings in our 5th grade class that would allow you to be enrolled a year before that 6th grade rush, and as a bonus, families who apply for 5th grade before the end of July will have the $35 Application Fee waived AND will receive a free Yearbook at the end of the school year ($15 value)! To take advantage of this $50 incentive package, download an application at www.sdbenicia.org or visit our school office and get started on the process that will give your child the gift of a Catholic education that meets the needs of the whole child.
