WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, we confess that far too often our words and actions are not shaped and molded by the Holy Spirit. We have used the gifts of your Spirit to enhance our own glory rather than use them to serve others. Forgive our lack of commitment to love as Jesus loved and to serve as Jesus served. Fill us anew with the Holy Spirit so that we use your gifts to enliven our worship, witness and service. This we pray in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks

through despair, life breaks through death.

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen.

* CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Hymnal No. 579 Gloria Patri

THE WORD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

FIRST LESSON Isaiah 62:1-5

ANTHEM Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace S. S. Wesley

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee. The darkness is no darkness with Thee, but the night is as clear as the day. The darkness and the light to Thee are both alike. God is light and with Him is no darkness at all. Oh let my soul live and it shall praise Thee. For Thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, for evermore.

SECOND LESSON John 2:1-11

SERMON “Common Sense” Rev. Richard S. Hong

THE OFFERING

OFFERTORY Let Us Light a Candle Shepherd

In a world where people walk in darkness Let us turn our faces to the light, To the light of God revealed in Jesus, To the Daystar scattering our night. For the light is stronger than the darkness And the day will overcome the night. Though the shadows linger all around us, Let us turn our faces to the light.

In a world where suff'ring of the helpless Casts a shadow all along the way, Let us bear the Cross of Christ with gladness And proclaim the dawning of the day. For the light is stronger than the darkness And the day will overcome the night. Though the shadows linger all around us, Let us turn our faces to the light.

Let us light a candle in the darkness, In the face of death, a sign of life. As a sign of hope where all seems hopeless, As a sign of peace in place of strife. For the light is stronger than the darkness And the day will over come the night.

Page 5: Ordinary 2c 1-17-2016 - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com...I don’t mind the grat skies, cause they’re just clouds passing by. January 17, 2016 Eleven o’clock SECOND SUNDAY

Though the shadows linger all around us, Let us turn our faces to the light.

* THE DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below. Praise God above, ye heavenly host. Creator, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

* * * * * TODAY’S MUSIC

David Conte (b. 1955) is currently Professor of Composition and Conductor of the Conservatory Chorus at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Among his many published works are songs, choral arrangements and operas. Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876) was the greandson of Charles Wesley and the son of musician Samuel Wesley. He served as organist for Exeter and Winchester cathedrals and composed exclusively for the Anglican service. “Thou wilt keep him” is a beautiful and gentle anthem written in contrasting sections, this piece was included in the order of service for the Queen’s coronation in 1953. Choral anthems are just a small part of the output of prolific composer Richard Shephard (b. 1948). In addition to his composing and

conducting appearances, he serves as Chamberlain for York Minster. New Zealand born Craig Sellar Lang (1891-1971) produced a fair quantity of song and choral works during his career in England but he is largely remembered today on the strength of just one hit for solo organ: his Tuba Tune, Opus 15, a favourite of recitalists. This dashing little piece, which owes its title to the boisterous melody sounded forth on the organ's tuba stop, begins in the style of Handel but, in its central section, has some brief key changes that could belong to no century except the 20th.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Isaiah 62:1-5 (NRSV) For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. 2The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. John 2:1-11 NRSV) On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. 9When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water

But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
