“Hmmm…I knew I shoulda taken that left turn in Albuquerque.” - Bugs Bunny

Have I made the wrong choice?

We all know what it feels like to ask yourself this question. Whether you’re second-guessing a job you took, a relationship you find yourself in the middle of, or what you ordered for lunch, you know the sensation of having the sinking feeling that you might have made a mistake.

Being a disciple of Jesus is no different.

The Gospel of Luke was written to a man named Theophilus. We don't know a lot of details about Theophilus, but he appears to be a Christian who is having second thoughts about the life of discipleship he has embarked upon. This is how Luke addresses him in the book’s beginning: …[I’ve written this for you], Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

Apparently, Theophilus is questioning his decision to become a Christian. Living in a culture that is marked by ruthless power politics, a relatively weak and often hidden church, and an almost incessant questioning and dismissal of the Christian faith, it is easy to envision Theophilus asking questions like: Is this Jesus story really true? Is God really faithful to his promises? What does true discipleship look like?

Luke went to great lengths researching and crafting his gospel to answer questions like these. He wrote it so that people like Theophilus, and us, might have confidence that God is at work in the world and in our lives through Jesus Christ. To be a disciple of Jesus is to be on the right path―the path of salvation, which to Luke and his original audience meant healing or wholeness.

So, whether you’re a new Christian, a seasoned saint, or someone investigating Jesus for the first time, Luke is a great book for you to dive into.

Let us worship.

A visitor to an Australian outback cattle ranch was intrigued by the seemingly endless miles of farming country with no sign of any fences. He asked a local rancher how he kept track of his cattle. The rancher replied, "Oh, that's no problem. Out here we dig wells instead of building fences."

"Out here we dig wells instead of building fences." The implication, I hope, is obvious. There is no need to fence cattle in when they are highly motivated to stay within range of water, their most important source of life.

Let's consider this as a paradigm for a type of spiritual growth which is based on digging deeper wells rather than on building higher fences....

Paul Hiebert, a missiologist from Trinity Evangelical School of Divinity (Deerfield, Illinois, USA) suggests that it makes a great deal of difference to our perspective on evangelism and mission whether we think of Christianity as a bounded set or a centred set.

If we take a bounded set view, who qualifies? Where precisely is the boundary? Who is "in" and who is "out"? How much must a person know of doctrine and scripture before we can call that person a Christian? What differences of lifestyle need to be apparent as proof of change? At what point has conversion taken place?

These are tough questions.

Hiebert suggests that it is much more realistic and helpful to think of Christianity as a centered set, a set defined by movement towards the center, the person of Jesus.

Now, conversion is the point at which a person turns towards the centre and begins the journey. That new fragile follower of Jesus (about whom he or she may know very little) is as much part of the centered set as is the missionary who told him the gospel story. The fact that the missionary has a degree in theology is irrelevant to defining the set. The fact that they are both moving towards the central goal is what matters. Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet:

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service.

Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders

The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service.

Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself―today and every day.

Seated L E C T I O S A C R A Genesis 1:1-5, 24-31

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship.

Standing C O N F E S S I O N O F S I N

Our God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You have made us a sent people. But at times we have resisted this new identity. Forgive us for this.

Give us hearts for the people you have placed in our lives. Overcome our fear and indifference. Knit us into a community that loves the lost, serves the broken, and welcomes the stranger. Protect us from removing your mission from our day to day lives May your glory be seen and known, as we live under your gracious care.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently)

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

R E C E I V I N G O F G R A C E Adapted from 1 John 1 If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

1. Do you believe that you are created in the image of God, that he loves and delights in you as his child, and that he has made you a bearer of his love and blessing into the world?

2. Do you acknowledge yourself to be a sinner in the sight of God, justly deserving his displeasure, and without hope except through His sovereign mercy?

3. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus as the Son of God and savior of sinners, and do you receive and rest upon him alone for salvation as he is offered in the Gospel?

4. Do you now resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you will endeavor to live as becomes a follower of Christ?

5. Do you promise to support the church in its worship and work to the best of your ability?

6. Do you submit yourself to the government and discipline of the Church, and do you promise to strive for its purity and peace?

The offering is a way for members and friends of Grace Church Seattle to support the church’s mission and ministry. If you are our guest today, please feel under no compulsion to give. Please let us know you’ve joined us today, as well as any comments or prayer requests, by placing your welcome card in the offering basket.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

M U S I C A L O F F E R I N G O Tr i u n e G o d Lyrics provided for reflection

O triune God, who commands all the universe, you have prescribed me to care for all that concerns your kingdom and my soul.

Let me live and pray as one baptized into the threefold name.

Our Father, who art in heaven,  hallowed be thy name. Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line.

Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen.

WAYS TO GET CONNECTED

Parish fellowships What is a parish? A parish is a neighborhood or collection of neighborhoods that are proximate to each other. Each parish has a parish captain who is responsible for coordinating quarterly parish fellowships for the people who live within the parish. These fellowships are a great opportunity for new people to connect with others from Grace and for regular attendees and members to get together for an informal time of fun and fellowship together. To be added to your parish e-mail list, contact your parish captain (see page 13) or e-mail our Ministry Administrator, Catie Stroethoff at [email protected].

Community groups What is a community group? A community group (CG) is a small group of up to 12 adults plus children that commit to journey together for the year (September-May) for the purpose of growing in relationship with God and each other. Community groups are located throughout the city, and are hosted and led by various members of the Grace community. CGs spend time in some form of study/discussion and prayer as well as fellowship. To see the list of available groups and/or register for a CG, visit our website (www.graceseattle.org) and click on the link for community group registration. Since our congregation draws from a wide geographic area, the parish model provides a way for people to connect with people who live near them. There is the greatest opportunity for organic connection and time together when people are proximate to one another. We want to establish and grow community groups within each parish, and we also hope that quarterly parish fellowships provide a natural way to reach out to neighbors who aren’t part of the Grace community. If you are uncertain which parish your neighborhood is in, contact Debbie Smith at [email protected].

Luke 6:1-11

[1] On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. [2] But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” [3] And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: [4] how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” [5] And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

[6] On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. [7] And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. [8] But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. [9] And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” [10] And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. [11] But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
