By the time Alfredo and Alicia Arce at last realized their dream of homeownership, they had been married for 27 years and raised five children. The couple is originally from Michoacán, a state in Western Mexico whose name means place of fisherman and whose economic base today is still primarily agriculture, fishing and tourism. The Arces moved to the United States in 2003, settling in the Fellsmere area and quickly finding employment. Today Alfredo works for SunAg and Alicia at the Azteca Mexican Store. By 2011, the family’s living conditions had become unacceptable, with 10 people squashed into a four-room apartment, and virtually no personal space for anyone. The couple’s (then) 2-year-old granddaughter, Jimena, attended Redlands Christian Migrant Association’s Headstart program, through which the Arces learned about Habitat for Humanity and realized it could be the answer to their housing situation. Deciding to seek a Habitat home, the couple applied, but were unable to qualify. Determined, they applied a second time, and then a third until, finally, they met all the requirements and were accepted. They had officially become Habitat homebuyers. The Arce Family Family Spotlight Rob Tench(left)celebrates with the Arce family at their home dedication in Fellsmere. Alicia remembers, “We were very excited! My father had just passed away when we found out we had been accepted. It was very good news at a very hard time.” In July 2012, with the paperwork and long hours of Sweat Equity behind them, the Arces received the key to the front door of their own 4-bedroom, 2-bath home in Fellsmere’s Grace Meadows neighborhood. “Habitat,” says Alicia, beaming, “has helped us so much! We were looking for a home of our own for such a long time. Everyone at Habitat was so kind and helpful. Now the children can go outside more. They can have more space of their own, with a front yard – and a backyard.”

Thank you to all who supported the Orchid Island Habitat Program through a variety of methods last fiscal year. The supporters listed above donated to the Orchid Fall Appeal between July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012.

Orchid Island VolunteersWorking together, making a difference.

Dear Fellow Orchid Member:

This is the 10th anniversary season for Orchid Island’s Habitat program, and we have committed to build our 18th, 19th and 20th homes. Thanks to the generosity of our Orchid donors, we will have provided a decent and safe place to live for 20 families during our 10 years of work with Indian River Habitat for Humanity (IRHFH). Now here is the bad news. In Indian River County, almost 15% of the population is living below the poverty line. There are 16,100 who pay over 30% of their income toward housing; 897 live in over crowded conditions; and 850 live in substandard conditions. It takes 88 hours of work at minimum wage every week to afford a decent, two bedroom apartment at fair market rental.

So we have plenty of work ahead. We hope you will use the contribution card on this brochure to make a special 10th anniversary gift to help us continue our mission to build homes and lives. We also need volunteers to work at the site. You do not have to be skilled in construction to participate and be a valued member of the team. Please check out the volunteer card on the opposite side of the contribution card for more details. For those of you new to Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club, and/or unfamiliar with the specifics of the Habitat program, IRHFH has been around since 1991 and is part of a worldwide organization that builds homes for those in need. Prospective homeowners must meet certain criteria. Applicants must show a need based on their current living conditions, have the ability to pay an interest free mortgage and have a willingness to partner with Habitat by contributing 300-500 hours of “sweat equity” in building their own home and/or one of their neighbors. Habitat is a “hand up” not a “hand out” and with your assistance, we can build a stronger and healthier community.

Thanks for your support,

Your Habitat/Orchid Committee

A special thanks to our fellow members, Sheila and Francois Brutsch (pictured right), for their wonderful gift of $100,000, which includes $75,000 to build 1 1/2 Habitat homes and $25,000 to fund the Indian River Habitat for Humanity Scholarship program. The Scholarship program provides financial assistance to Habitat homeowners and their children who are committed to advancing their education, as well as providing assistance toward education-based after school and summer care programs.

Francois first became interested in our Habitat program while volunteering at the site of our homes in the Grace Meadows Community in Fellsmere.
