Nicholas Burko

Nicholas grew up in Manhattan, the world’s financial capital. Nicholas became intrigued in

business at an early age. Nicholas’ quest to learn about this lifeblood of the city and the nation led him to

enroll, in eleventh grade, in his first economics course. In that economics course, Nicholas’ love for

finance and business was fostered. At the end of the semester, the students were tasked with creating a

stock portfolio. Not long thereafter, he created a portfolio of 40 stocks to eliminate sector-specific and

stock-specific risk. Nicholas thought that it was the most influential project of his high school career.

Nicholas was hooked and knew that he wanted to pursue a career in finance, which led him to apply early

decision to Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management.

At Syracuse University, Nicholas is a Finance major with the intention to double major in either

Economics or Managerial Accounting. At Whitman, Nicholas is a dedicated student, who is on the Dean’s

List each semester. He received certification in Microsoft Excel from Certipoint. During winter break of

his sophomore year, Nicholas was selected to participate in Whitman on Wall Street, an immersive

program visiting New York financial institutions and networking with Syracuse University alumni

working in the financial sector. During the trip, he was selected to serve as a “group leader” and helped

fellow participants navigate from institution to institution around the City, a testament to his innate

leadership qualities. Nicholas is currently the Assistant Treasurer of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity on

campus where he implements cost saving measures for the organization’s long-term financial health.

In the summer following his sophomore year, Nicholas interned at Protocol Capital Management

a bespoke merchant bank in New York with expertise in capital placement and consulting in the

alternative investment field. Nicholas applied what he learned in the classroom on a daily basis by putting

together performance reports and conducting investment research.

As a member of the Orange Value Fund, Nicholas is excited to utilize his extraordinary

leadership qualities, superb work ethic, dynamic organizational and interpersonal skills, superlative

quantitative skills to propel himself to a successful career as an investment banker.

Timothy Cairns

Timothy’s first exposure to finance started at a young age with his mother and fathers careers in

consumer and investment banking fields, where through dinner table conversations and countless long car

rides to ice hockey tournaments, he would always hear about the financial markets and current events.

These casual conversations spurred Timothy’s passion for finance that led him to pursue a double major

in finance and economics at the Whitman School of Management and Maxwell School at Syracuse.

In high school, Timothy’s passion for business and finance was continued with the numerous

business and economics courses that he took to increase his knowledge of the business world. These

classes lead him to create an investment club that brought together students who had varying interests in

finance and business and helped teach them the importance of investing and practice trading using a

virtual stock portfolio game. Taking advantage of all the opportunities he had, Timothy attended Bentley

University’s Wall Street 101 program where he furthered his knowledge of finance and created research

reports for a buy and sell recommendation on two companies. Timothy also, completed his senior high

school capstone project on Mortgage Backed Securities (MBS), learning the types of risk involved and

how they are analyzed and then culminating the experience with a comprehensive presentation on how

MBS’ and the Great Recession where related.

Now at Syracuse, Timothy has continued taking advantage of all that is offered to him and has

become an active member of the Syracuse University Investment Club to help manage the funds $130,000

portfolio. He has also excelled in the classroom as demonstrated by his consistent recognition on the

Dean’s list. In addition to his academic and extra-curricular activities, Timothy has also become certified

in basic excel and is working on achieving his Bloomberg terminal certification. Timothy is excited to

join the Orange Value Fund and believes his experiences and background will be a useful asset to the

fund and will continue to help him succeed.

Greg Fligor

Growing up spending Summers managing boat cleaning business on the waters of Martha’s

Vineyard, Greg learned that to be successful it requires a top-notch work ethic, reliability and

communication both internally and externally with clients. After raising the necessary funds in order to

pursue his scuba certification and purchase proper scuba equipment, he successfully repaid all that he

borrowed and within a few weeks began to see profits. Greg launched a weekly marketing campaign

targeted at boat owners to continue to grow the customer base which ultimately led to the expansion of

the operation and to hiring 3 new employees to keep up with the demand for his services. The slogan that

he reminded the team everyday was, “We dive right in and go overboard for our clients!” It was this

mindset coupled with his competitiveness, and desire to be the best that has stuck with him.

Greg works tirelessly to exemplify this hunger and drive to find success in whatever he does and

this is demonstrated by his accomplishments as a member US National Sailing Team, as well as being a

2x National Champion Snowboard Racer. When facing a challenge or any adversity Greg does not shy

away rather he sees this as an opportunity to step up and be a leader.

Greg’s interests for financial services can be traced back to the dinner table growing up listening

to his father discuss events that happened over that day and how that was going to directly or indirectly

affect what he was working on. Through the years he has continued to soak up information and sharpen

his skills by utilizing resources such as MarketWatch Virtual Stock Portfolio Platform, The Wall Street

Journal, Bloomberg, as well as professors and mentors to expand his knowledge of the financial services

industry. Greg plans to use all of the knowledge and resources that he continues to accumulate in order to

establish a successful career in investment banking.

Taylor Kaaukai

Taylor is a finance major at the Whitman School of Management and pursuing a minor in

economics at the Maxwell School. He has always had a passion to learn, drive to succeed, and ability to

learn quickly. A family member practicing M&A law first exposed him to the financial services industry

during college, leading Taylor to an unrelenting interest in business and financial markets.

Coming from Paia, HI, Taylor was not heavily exposed to business before arriving at Azusa

Pacific University in Los Angeles, CA. After meeting professionals in investment management, he started

to gain a new perspective on business. This led him to change majors from physics to finance during his

freshman year and join the APU Student Investment Team. There, he was able to assist in the creation of

the team’s investment strategy and portfolio as an analyst for the financial sector.

During the summer of 2015, he had an internship with Harman International Industries, Inc. in

finance and controlling. A culmination of these experiences led him to the pursuit of a career in financial

services. Because of this goal, he chose to transfer to Syracuse University to attend a competitive business

school. At Syracuse, Taylor tutors economics to freshmen and sophomores and is an active member of the

SU Investment Club.

This summer, Taylor was part of a rotational internship with Robert W. Baird, completing

rotations in Asset Management, Equity Research, Fixed Income, and Institutional Equities. This

opportunity allowed him gain a broad view of an investment bank as well as complete projects within

each department such as industry and company analysis in Asset Management, financial modeling in

Equity Research, municipal market analysis in Fixed Income, and stock pitches to sales teams in

Institutional Equities.

Taylor is excited to apply his analytical skills and experience as a junior analyst for the Orange

Value Fund. He believes the combination of rigorous academics and real experience is an unparalleled

opportunity. After graduation, Taylor plans on pursuing a career in investment banking or asset

management.

Refjola Malushi

Refjola was first intrigued by the world of business in middle school when she read her first 401K

statement. Growing up in an immigrant family with non-English speaking parents, she translated just

about everything to Albanian for her parents - from CNBC broadcasts and car leases to 401K statements.

Although these seemed like chores at the time, these experiences established the strong foundation of

Refjola’s knowledge and love for commerce.

Refjola decided to pursue a career in Finance during her sophomore year of high school when she

participated in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge sponsored by State Street. The challenge

stimulated a 60-day cycle of the stock market and its functions of buying, selling, analysis, and risk, in

which every 60 seconds represented a day of trading. Between the hustle and bustle of selling and buying

stocks at a moment’s notice, she realized that this was merely the beginning of her Finance career.

Refjola capitalized her interests when she decided to major in Finance and Accounting at the

Martin J. Whitman School of Management and minor in Global Political Economy. Outside the

classroom, she utilizes her interest in Finance to create a greater good for the community by taking on the

position of VP of Fundraising for Habitat for Humanity. Refjola created detailed budgets for fundraisers

by collecting invoices as well as planned and executed community wide events to raise over $2,000.

After her sophomore year, Refjola interned with Natixis Global Asset Management (NGAM) as a

legal intern where she worked closely with lawyers and paralegals at a time when regulations on financial

companies were constantly changing. She gained exposure outside of legal such with NGAM launching

their first ETF and learning about portfolio construction. Refjola’s internship was an invaluable learning

experience which excited her for the endless learning she’ll gain at every stage of her career.

Refjola looks forward to be a Junior Analyst for the Orange Value Fund. She realizes that the best

way to gain a financial education is through the real world responsibility of managing money. All of

Refjola’s experiences have allowed her passion for a career in financial services to grow as she looks

forward to further develop her skills.

Matthew Moore

Currently a Junior at Syracuse University, Matthew Moore is perusing a major in finance from

the Whitman School of Management, as well as a major in economics from the Maxwell School of

Citizenship. Matthew spent most of his life in his hometown in Colorado, before attending a boarding

school in Cleveland, Ohio to play hockey. Upon graduating high school Matthew continued his hockey

career by playing junior hockey in New Jersey. Through his experience as a high-level, competitive

athlete he developed important leadership skills and critical-thinking skills.

Matthew’s passion for the business world started at a young age as he took an interest in his

father’s real estate appraisal company. Initially, Matthew wanted to work in the real estate industry but

over the years his interests have evolved. The financial crisis had a major impact on his father’s company

and because of this he wanted to learn more about the causes of the crisis. He learned about the inner

workings of the market crash through the involvement of Mortgage Backed Securities and how they

played such a crucial role in the downturn of global markets. This is when Matthew became interested in

pursuing a career path in financial services.

In order to follow his passions, Matthew decided to attend the Whitman School of Management

and has been an active member at Syracuse University. He has been a peer mentor at the Whitman School

of Management where he continued to develop his leadership skills, and is also a part of the Investment

Club where he has furthered developed his critical-thinking skills. The most influential experience for

Matthew was the Whitman on Wall Street trip which made him realize that this is the career path that he

wants to pursue even though it is very competitive to break into.

Matthew is motivated to start working for the Orange Value Fund which will allow him to gain

real world experience as well as an invaluable education that will help differentiate him as a candidate.

After graduating, Matthew hopes to take the knowledge and experience gained from the Orange Value

Fund and pursue a career in the financial services industry.

Michael Slutsky

Originally from Israel, Michael came to America at the age of five. He spent the majority of his

childhood in St. Louis, Missouri, before moving to New York during his sophomore year of high school.

Michael is a very optimistic and motivated individual with a unique passion for numbers. Michael first

became interested in finance when he took an economics class as a junior in high school. The curriculum

included a stock market simulation game, as well as a trip to the New York Stock Exchange. Shortly after

the conclusion of the class, Michael opened up his own investment account with his personal savings. He

initially began as a technical trader, but has transitioned to a more fundamental approach.

Immediately after arriving to Syracuse University as a freshman, Michael knew he needed to

work hard and learn as much as possible about the financial services industry. He began to explore the

different opportunities offered to students with a passion for finance. He joined the Syracuse University

Investment Club as a research analyst, where he has presented numerous presentations and pitches. He

successfully co-pitched a long position in Tesla Motors that yielded a 25% gain. He is also involved in a

number of other clubs and events. He believes that his best experience within Whitman thus far has been

the Whitman on Wall Street Trip. The three-day trip made him realize how competitive the industry really

is, and what he needs to do to truly be successful.

The summer after his freshman year, Michael interned at Ipreo, a major market intelligence and

analytics firm. While there, he had more of a client relations role, but he knew he wanted something more

quantitative based. This past summer, Michael landed an internship at an institutional broker-dealer called

Bay Crest Partners. While there, Michael shadowed traders on multiple desks, learning the intricacies of

the different products. After shadowing and speaking to numerous alumni, Michael has decided that he

would like to pursue investment banking as a career path.

Michael believes that the experience and knowledge he will gain as an Orange Value Fund

Analyst will help him stand out among his peers as a candidate for investment banking. He hopes that his

work ethic and passion for finance will be of great value to the Orange Value Fund Program.
