One of Orange County’s greatest quality of life attributes is its view-shed. Rolling hills, apple orchards, and picturesque dairy barns dot the landscape like spots on a Holstein cow. Looking at them from afar, one wouldn’t recognize that behind the bucolic landscape is an economic engine that has shielded Orange County from the economic recession and has spurred growth in our region.

On a recent agribusiness tour through the county, business and community leaders learned that recent high-tech investments in several agricultural businesses have increased tax rateables, added jobs, and even contribut-ed significantly to research and development in the dairy and fruit industries.

While on the surface Orange County’s agribusinesses seem like quiet, small family-owned farms, in fact many of them sit on the cutting edge of their industries and incorpo-rate new technologies regularly to keep them producing high-quality goods that are profit-able and sustainable.

Keeping local dollars in the local economy

Take for example Mark Ford Stables and Training Center in the Town of Wallkill. Opened in 2008, this 300-stall facility is home to the nation’s harness-racing cham-pions and top trainers. Mr. Ford leases stalls and facilities to a dozen trainers, and overall, these renters employ hundreds of local resi-dents and add sizeable investments to the

county through heavy equipment purchases, feed, veterinary services and more. The vast majority of the dollars spent by these stables are local, keeping the investment right here in Orange County.

Like Mark Ford Stables, Warwick Val-ley Winery, a local winery that also produces hard cider and other whiskeys distributed na-tionally, prides itself on using local goods and services whenever possible. It not only makes sense for the community but locally grown products are hot commodities these days. necessary to produce the whiskey and plans to do so again next year.

Contributing to science and technology

Crist Brothers Orchards, New York’s top apple producer, recently added a multi-million dollar facility to its operation, more than dou-bling its capacity and production. Not only does the Crist family contribute to our local economy through employment, capital invest-ment and supplies, they are also major con-tributors to research and development of new apple varieties in New York State. The Crists

work closely with Cornell University testing new varieties that will help keep New York

among the world’s top apple producers. The Smiley Farm in the Town of Wallkill is

in another local agribusiness that is well versed in today’s technology. The small dairy barn is a Dairy of Distinction that has operated as a fam-ily business for several generations. For the farm’s proprietor, Russell Smiley, keeping healthy, high-producing cows is a must, and so he works closely with genetics companies and Cornell Cooperative Extension and Orange County Soil and Water to ensure high yields and strong animals.

All told, the agricultural industry is con-tributing to Orange County’s growth in a sig-nificant way. Cornell Cooperative Extension

estimates that over $115 million is pumped into the local economy each year through agribusiness. Whether it comes from the retail side - like the Hoeffner Farm in Montgom-ery which sells directly to local residents at its farm stand and to a much broader audience at the Green Market in New York City, or from pumpkin and apple picking, hay rides, farm tours, farmers markets, etc. - it’s clear that the wholesale, manufacturing and service side of agriculture plays a major role in keeping Or-ange County’s economy sound.

The second annual “Dance with the Chamber Stars” attracted an overflow crowd at Mount Saint Mary College’s Hudson Hall on a very rainy Friday, September 23. More than 150 people danced the night away to fabulous music provided Rene Campos of DMU Music. Not only that, free tango and ballroom lessons -- as well as spectacular dance demonstrations -- were provided by our friends at Strictly Ballroom and Tango Under the Tent. Sodexo Catering pro-vided a terrific spread, including beer, wine and soda, all for $25 per person. Mark your calendar NOW for the third annual “Dance with the Chamber Stars” on September 21, 2012. Because of the popularity of DWCS, we will likely be moving it to a larger venue. Watch Viewpoint for news.

Above, Jill Varricchio (Concept Promotions) and Jeff Klein (D&D Mailing Services) practice the tango, while instructor Maia Martinez works with Marlene Regelski and Tom O’Neill.

Taking home the “Best in Show” trophy at DWCS was Mount Saint Mary College accounting senior Skye Greg-ory. The trophy was donated by Hudson Valley Awards. Pictured with Skye is Cynthia Marsh-Croll (Croll Produc-tive Synergy), Chairman of the dance committee.

November 2011 The Business Viewpoint 3

It’s become a tradition for me to use my November message to remind everyone about the importance of voting in the up-coming elections.

In these challenging times, it’s never been more important for every one of us to go to the polls and let our voices be heard. None of us can afford to be complacent with so much at stake.

Unemployment, taxes, health care, educa-tion, crime, terrorism, ethics in government, the environment, our children’s futures…very little is untouched by the people we vote into power. Don’t let these people get into office without you having a say. If you don’t say it on Election Day, you have no right to whine later on when things don’t go your way.

Two other quick items before I close: ● If you have an idea for something the

Chamber could or should be doing, please get it to me. Just shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]. Each and every idea

will receive careful consideration. ● Patronize our local businesses, espe-

cially as the holiday season approaches. Buy locally, give locally, fly locally (Stewart Air-port) and build locally. It’s the only way our economy is going to survive.

HoeBowl’s Orange Lanes in Walden, rep-resented by Lisa Iannucci, is the winner of our sixth annual Orange County Business Idol competition.

In business for 50 years, the HoeBowl Fam-ily of lanes also includes centers in Wappingers Falls, Poughkeepsie, Kingston and Catskill, in addition to Orange Lanes located on Route 52 in Walden. Orange Lanes is managed by Joe Darmochwal.

In her Business Idol presentation, Lisa suc-ceeded in effectively pointing out that bowling is an affordable activity, one that is “good for all ages, no matter what level of bowling you are.” Noting that the President’s Council on Fitness has focused on getting and keeping children healthy, Lisa explained how bowling can be an ideal way to accomplish this.

HoeBowl had been a Business Idol com-petitor in a previous competition, but, Lisa said, they weren’t quite ready for the enormous promotional opportunities that the Idol win-ner receives. However, after making “multiple changes,” Orange Lanes, she said is ready to get to the “next level.”

Lisa, Joe Darmochwal and HoeBowl owner A.J. Forest have already met with the Chamber’s PR/Marketing Committee to discuss strate-gies going forward.. In addition to the leagues, tournaments, birthday parties and charity events that are already offered at Orange Lanes, sugges-tions included taking advantage of Joe’s 30 years of catering experience to offer menu items that would go way beyond the types of food that are traditionally available at bowling venues.

The PR/Marketing Committee will continue to work with Orange Lanes to ensure that they take full advantage of the more than $22,000 in promotional and marketing opportunities in-cluded in the 2011 Business Idol prize package.

Congratulations to this year’s Business Idol! For more information about HoeBowl Orange Lanes, call 845- 778-5151 or visit e-mail [email protected].

One of the busiest people at the Chamber, Dan O’Brien, clockwise, makes introductory remarks at a New Member Orientation in the Larkin Room at the Chamber Business Center in Montgomery, interviews Paul McArthur and Dr. Douglas Winslow Cooper for an installment of the weekly Orange Chamber Chat radio program, and shares a laugh with Naomi DuBaldi (Merle Norman Cosmetics) at EXPO 2011.

After more than 20 years with the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, Senior Vice President for Membership Dan O’Brien will retire at the end of December.

While Chamber President John D’Ambrosio is considered the face of the Chamber, Dan is truly the Chamber’s heart.

A native of New York City, Dan brought his grandfather’s printing company, J.J. O’Brien & Son, from New York City to Goshen in January of 1975. President of the company at the time, he joined the Goshen Chamber of Commerce the following year.

Not one to let the grass grow under his feet, Dan became President of the Goshen Chamber in 1982 and held the same position a few years later (exactly when, Dan says he can’t remem-ber). He went to work for the former Orange County Chamber in Middletown as Director of Membership in January of 1991, moved to The Chamber of Commerce, Inc., formerly the East-ern Orange County Chamber of Commerce in January of 1997, went through the consolidation of the two chambers in Orange County in Octo-ber of 1997….and the rest is history.

What is different in business now than two de-cades ago? Dan says without hesitation, “the huge change in the use of technology.” He also says with-out hesitation that the best thing about the Orange County Chamber of Commerce is its members.

What does Dan have planned after he re-tires? “At this point absolutely, positively noth-ing” he says, “except for the 437 page ‘To-Do’ list my wife has for me.”

Everyone is invited to celebrate Dan’s time at the Chamber and wish him well on his re-tirement at a special reception on Wednesday, December 14 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor. Admission is $25 per person. Please make a reservation with Roseann by calling 457-9700, e-mailing [email protected] or visiting www.orangeny.com.

Let’s make this a send-off Mr. O’Brien won’t soon forget!

Join us to bid Dano adieu
