introduction

For midsize companies, extending the depth and breadth of customer relationships is

key to staying competitive. Implementing application technologies that can help this

effort requires weighing needed functionality, capacity, reliability, and availability

characteristics against total cost of ownership. Sun Systems for Siebel CRM

Professional Edition is the first complete technology solution that leverages Oracle

Virtual Machine Templates for Siebel CRM 8.1.1 and combines them with Sun’s

high-performance, energy-efficient systems. The result is a solution that can help

lower cost, minimize risk, and simplify and speed deployment. With this solution,

organizations can get Siebel CRM up fast—in less than three hours.

Oracle’s Siebel CRM can help companies thrive in today’s customer-driven

marketplace by empowering employees with increased information visibility,

increasing the lifetime value of customers, and accelerating the ability to maximize

revenues while protecting technology investments. Many companies use distributed

information systems consisting of many small physical servers that are often idle

to ensure sufficient capacity and redundancy is available during periods of high

demand. Virtualization—a software technology that supports multiple virtual

servers transparently in a single hardware server—is an exciting tool for balancing

the work that must be done against the cost of operations. The cornerstone for

the Sun Systems for Siebel CRM Professional Edition solution is the Sun Fire™ X4270

server, a system designed specifically for virtualization that outperforms comparable

systems from other vendors on key virtualization benchmarks.1

This document outlines the steps for installing and configuring the Sun Systems

for Siebel CRM Professional Edition solution. Topics covered include setup and

implementation of the Sun Fire X4270 server, Oracle VM Server 2.1.2, and Siebel

CRM 8.1.1 software. Preparation steps are designed to help ensure intuitive and easy

setup and operation of the virtualized Siebel environment on Sun Fire servers.

Chapter 2

solution Architecture

Several hardware and software components comprise the base configuration for the

Sun Systems for Siebel CRM Professional Edition solution (Figure 2-1). This document

describes a base configuration with an optional Sun™ Storage J4200 array for

additional storage capacity.

• SunFireX4270server

Designed to support consolidation and virtualization efforts, Sun Fire X4270

servers are powered by up to two Intel® Xeon® 5500 Series processors and deliver

performance, expandability, energy efficiency, and virtualization capabilities in a

compact 2U form factor. Compute, memory, storage, and I/O subsystem density

and expandability, combined with redundant and hot-swappable components and

built-in system management tools, make Sun Fire X4270 servers ideally suited to

database and Web infrastructure deployments.

• SunStorageJ4200array(optional)

Offering breakthrough pricing, reliable data integrity and security, and ease of

management, the Sun Storage J4200 array can help companies derive greater

value from business-critical data. Supporting up to 48 SATA or SAS hard disk drives,

fully hot-swappable and redundant I/O modules, power supplies, and cooling

modules, and up to 36 Gb/sec of bandwidth, Sun Storage J4200 arrays deliver cost-

effective, highly reliable storage in a compact 2U footprint.

• Oraclesoftware

The Sun Systems for Siebel CRM Professional Edition solution includes the

Oracle VM Template for Siebel CRM, which consists of two templates. The Oracle

Database VM template includes the Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 (32-bit) and Oracle

Database 11.1.0.6 software. The Siebel Applications VM template includes Oracle

Enterprise Linux 5.3 (32-bit), Oracle Database Client 11.1.0.6, Oracle HTTP Server

10.1.3, and Siebel CRM SIA 8.1.1 software. Administrators can choose to deploy

both templates on a single physical server or on two or more separate physical

servers.

The installation and configuration steps described in this document deploy both

templates on a single physical Sun Fire X4270 server.
