Greetings ...The Oaks Festival is one of Oracle’s finest, and longest-running traditions. It’s one special Saturday every spring when our community comes together to celebrate everything from our oak trees and landscapes to our diverse personalities and passions. This year, it’s another classic event highlighting life under the Oaks. Start the morning with the Car Run followed by the Oaks parade. Have some breakfast at OCC – then browse the booths, munch a lunch, dance at the Cake Walk, check out the Silent Auction and take a chance on the “Taste of Oracle” raffle. Stroll our landscaped areas and discover nature-filled nooks and crannies.

John Harris is this year’s Oracle Oaks Festival Grand Marshal.
By John HernandezCopper Area News
The 33rd Annual Oracle Oaks Festival will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018. This year’s Grand Marshal is John Harris. John is known for his sense of humor and for helping others in town. John was born in Illinois and is 87 years old. He bragged that he rode his motorcycle until he was 83. John spent four years in the Navy serving in the Aleutian Islands and Korea and is a Veteran of the Korean War. He spent a few years as a policeman in Missouri before becoming a truck driver and hauling goods across the United States and Canada.
He came to Oracle in 1999 and has lived here since then. When asked how he ended up in Oracle, he jokingly replied, “I really don’t know, I ran out of gas, I think.” John was interviewed at one of his favorite “hangouts” the barber shop. He also likes to hang out at Casa Rivera’s Restaurant. John said he does not know why he was picked as Grand Marshal. “I have the dullest history of anybody in the world,” he said. “I haven’t done anything but harass the natives since I been here.” John is a Mason and volunteers at the Community Center and all his pals at the barbershop says he does a lot for others. Congratulations John!

History to Play Role at Mormon Battalion Reenactment Group,
Power from the Past to Entertain
Power from the Past in last year’s Oracle Oaks Festival Parade.
April 21, 2018 www.oraclecommunitycenter.org Oracle Oaks Festival | 9
By John HernandezCopper Area News
This year’s Oaks Festival is expected to be exciting and entertaining. Two popular groups from last year’s event will be back. Power from the Past and the Mormon Battalion Reenactment Group will be at the Oaks Festival and in the parade. Power from the Past is a non-profit organization made up of people dedicated to collecting, restoring, and exhibiting early-day engines, tractors and equipment. They aim to entertain and educate people about rural power history. They provide vintage mechanical equipment and displays that may include antique farm tractors, steam engines, blacksmithing exhibition, small antique engines, powering mills or pumps, farm field implements, and an operational mobile sawmill cutting timber into boards powered by a tractor belt. This year the Power from the Past displays and exhibits will be located at the area where the car show is held on Justice Avenue by the courthouse. They will have a rope braiding demonstration by the Community Center which uses a hand crank unit that twists twine
into rope like it was done 100 years ago. Children will be able to get a rope to take home. The Mormon Battalion Re-enactment group will be at the Oaks Festival wearing their period costumes from the era of the Mexican War 1846 – 1847. The re-enactors honor the Mormon Battalion that marched from Council Bluffs, Iowa to San Diego, California. They traveled along the Santa Fe Trail through the Southwestern deserts including marching along the San Pedro and Gila rivers in the Copper Corridor area. These members of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints are the only religious unit ever recruited of a single religion, using the nickname of the church, Mormon to serve in the U.S. Army. Visitors to the Oracle Oaks Festival will get to see a replica of an encampment including tools, knives, guns, equipment and clothing of the era. They will be able to sample food made using cooking utensils and methods from the 1840s. There will be a demonstration of the loading and firing of an old black powder rifle. This was a well-attended and popular event last year. It should be an exciting and fun day as well as educational.
