What is Cloud Computing?

• Forrester: A standardized IT capability (services, software, or infrastructure)

delivered via Internet technologies in a pay-per-use, self-service way. Forrester Research: The Evolution of Cloud Computing Markets (July 6, 2010)

• Gartner: A style of computing where scalable and elastic IT-enabled capabilities

are delivered as a service to external customers using Internet technologies.

What is Cloud Computing?

• IDC Public cloud: Accessing “IT on demand” over the Internet with pay-as-you-

go models such as those from salesforce.com, Google Apps, and Amazon EC3

where IT infrastructure is shared across multiple customers. The IT

infrastructure is typically highly standardized and the management highly

automated.

• IDC Private cloud: A similar IT strategy as public clouds but it is applied within a

single enterprise or an extended enterprise as an internal shared set of

infrastructure. IDC: Cloud Computing Attitudes (April 2010)

This cloud model promotes availability and is composed of:

3 Service Models

• SaaS

• PaaS

• IaaS

4 Deployment Models

• Public Cloud

• Private Cloud

• Community Cloud

• Hybrid Cloud

5 Essential Characteristics

• On-demand self-service

• Resource pooling

• Rapid elasticity

• Measured service

• Broad network access

Summary

•Builds on a highly standardized, virtualized, consolidated, and automated foundation

•Requires a holistic, architectural approach—with iterative stages to reduce risk

•Delivers services that can be quickly provisioned and made available for business consumption

•Provides capacity that is easy to scale up or down in response to business demands

A successful cloud implementation:

•People: Design organization structure for shared services.

•Process: Many IT management processes support Cloud, including Enterprise Architecture and ITIL.

•Technology: Many Oracle products support cloud implementations, depending on the service(s). Cloud-enabling products have key commonalities—scalability, automated provisioning, resource abstraction/virtualization.

A successful cloud solution requires:

CHALLENGE: Service providers report losing sales opportunities and

experience excessive service delivery costs

ROOT CAUSE:

Avoid impact of growing application complexity, driven by:

• Risks: 75% of applications are deployed without testing

• Agility: The #1 cause of system outage is unmanaged change**

• Costs (win-win):

• APEX to OPEX (Customer): avoid capital burden

• Operational Costs (Delivery): 70% of IT budget is spent on

operations and maintenance**. Lack of automation tools.

• Quality of Service:

• Business-driven IT Management

• Cost of downtime

GAP: Lack of cloud services sought by enterprise customers
