    NOTICE

    The following precautions should be observed to avoid possible exposure to excessive microwave energy if using the SMART 6 Moisture/Solids Analyzer: • Do not tamper with the safety interlocks. The SMART 6 is equipped with three safety interlocks which prevent the instrument from producing microwave power if the cover is open. • Do not place any object between the SMART 6 cavity and the cover, or allow soil or cleaner residue to accumulate on sealing surfaces. • Do not operate the instrument if it is damaged. It is particularly important that the instrument cover close properly and that there is no damage to the cover (bent), hinges and latch (broken or loosened), or sealing surfaces of the SMART 6. • The instrument should only be adjusted or repaired by qualified service personnel. The following precautions should be observed to avoid instrument-induced electromagnetic interference: • The possibility of instrument-induced electromagnetic interference (EMI) is minimal if the precautions outlined above are followed. • The ORACLE should not be placed close to any electrical device susceptible to EMI. It is suggested that the user post a sign warning pacemaker wearers that a device utilizing microwave and magnetic fields is in operation. • If the SMART 6 is suspected of inducing EMI, please contact the CEM Service Department to perform a Microwave Leakage Test. This instrument utilizes high voltages and microwave radiation. • Instrument service and repair should be performed only by those trained in repair and maintenance of high voltage and microwave power systems. • If the ORACLE or SMART 6 are used in a manner not specified by CEM Corporation, protections provided by the systems may be impaired. Warnings, cautions, and notes are included throughout this manual and should be read thoroughly and strictly followed.     Introduction The ORACLE Universal Fat Analyzer offered by CEM utilizes proprietary nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal gathering to accurately measure the fat content of any product without the need for method development. The ORACLE is the first rapid, non-destructive technology able to provide a primary fat analysis, as opposed to the secondary analysis techniques employed by other rapid technologies (i.e. NIR, FT-IR, FT-NIR, and traditional TD-NMR). Using the ORACLE, a sample is dried to remove any free moisture that may cause interference, then conditioned to an optimal temperature using a stand-alone heater block or the internal QuikPrepTM heater. The NMR then sends a pulse of radio-frequency energy through the sample, causing any hydrogen protons specific to fat molecules to generate a response signal. This signal is recorded and calculated to represent the percent of total fat in the sample, typically taking less than 45 seconds for the entire process. The ORACLE consists of an NMR magnet to perform the fat analysis, an electronics box (listed as processor box) for controlling and storing system settings and data, and may also include a SMART 6 Moisture/Solids Analyzer for rapid moisture analysis and sample drying prior to testing in the magnet. The ORACLE utilizes a glass-capacitance touchscreen for intuitive testing and data maintenance, and employs the use of internal diagnostics to ensure full system functionality. ORACLE is the first rapid fat analysis system that requires no method/channel development and directly analyzes fat/oil in food samples. The system is rapid (45 second analysis), requires no solvents or chemists, and prevents operator to operator error and is not prone to potential issues encountered during wet reference chemistry. Since ORACLE is a direct technique and measures the entire sample, there are no costly method recalibrations or method development required. Once installed, the ORACLE is ready to accurately and repeatably measure fat/oil in any unknown food sample. Despite the word “nuclear” in the name, NMR does not use or generate radiation. The word “nuclear” in NMR refers to the instrument’s ability to analyze the nuclei of the sample.

    Safety Overview To the best of our knowledge, the information contained herein is accurate. The final determination of the suitability and proper use of the instrument described herein, the accuracy of the information and data obtained from such use, and whether such use infringes any patents or the legal safeguards of others are the sole responsibility of the user.

    WARNING

    To avoid degradation of the ORACLE magnet performance, or operator injury, do not place ferromagnetic items (e.g. mechanical tools) near the magnet. Magnets can attract ferrous objects, turning them into projectiles and causing injury. To prevent injury from high voltages, do not remove instrument covers or components unless you are trained in the repair of high voltage instruments. All components of this instrument utilize high voltages. Instrument service and repair should be performed only by those highly trained in repair and maintenance of high voltage and microwave power systems. Samples that can be considered flammable, corrosive, poisonous, or explosive must be discussed with the Process Applications group at CEM Corporation prior to analysis in the ORACLE. Failure to obtain approval from CEM Corporation can create a dangerous testing environment and will void any warranty. When using the SMART 6, analyzing solvents or products containing harmful volatiles requires the connection of an exhaust hose to the exhaust assembly located on the rear of the instrument. The exhaust hose must lead to an approved fume containment or ventilation system. Proper handling of dangerous materials must be followed based on the SDS (Safety Data Sheets) of the material to ensure a safe testing environment. Certain pace makers and other magnetically sensitive prosthetic devices may be affected by magnetic fields used in the ORACLE. It is recommended that users with these prosthetics do not approach the ORACLE within 11 in (0.3m). The ORACLE is susceptible to electromagnetic interference, and should not be placed close to any electrical device that emits EMI. If there are any uncertainties to the level of EMI being emitted by a nearby instrument, please contact CEM about the options available for ensuring an optimal testing location.

    System Installation Unpack System

    Note

    Retain all packing materials.

    1. Following the instructions below, carefully remove the instrument and place it on a vibration-free workbench or laboratory table in a location that:

    a. provides a draft free, dust free, dry environment. The temperature of the room must be between 50 °F

    and 85 °F (10 °C - 29 °C). Temperature should not vary more than 5 °F (2.5 °C) per day. Relative humidity range should be 0-85%. Take special care to avoid areas positioned directly underneath or in line with an air conditioner or similar source of air drafts.

    b. is free from vibration of large equipment and/or excessive walk-through traffic.

    c. is capable of supporting the combined weight of the ORACLE magnet (120 lbs/55 kg) and, if

    applicable, the ORACLE processor (37 lbs/17 kg) and SMART 6 (55 lbs/25 kg).

    d. does not have a steel (iron) top. Materials such as wood, plastic, aluminum, or non-magnetic stainless steel are suitable surfaces. Ensure that no steel bar, supporting the work surface, runs directly beneath the magnet. Any cabinets directly beneath the magnet should be cleared of metallic materials (though the cabinets themselves can be metallic).

    e. provides adequate bench space - 44 in. (112 cm) in length and 30 in. (76 cm) in depth minimum -

    SMART System and ORACLE Magnet - 75 in. (190 cm) in length and 30 in. (76 cm) in depth minimum –

    SMART System, ORACLE Magnet. ORACLE Processor and Power Conditioner (If space is available above or below the ORACLE for the power conditioner, 58 in. [148 cm] in length is sufficient for installation.)

    f. allows the instrument to be connected to a dedicated, grounded outlet as specified in the instrument

    specifications and capable of accepting the plug of the power conditioner illustrated in this manual.

    2. Carefully remove the ORACLE Processor from its shipping carton and, based on available space, place it on the workbench, on a shelf above the workbench or on the floor under the workbench.

    Note: The processor box must be within 9 ft. (3 m) of the magnet.

    3. Remove the six screws from the sides of the magnet shipping container.

    4. Lift the top from the shipping container.

    5. With two people positioned on the sides of the magnet container - one on each side - use the straps and carefully lift the magnet from the skid and place it on the workbench. The magnet weighs approximately 120 pounds (55 kg).

    6. Inspect each component of the system for visual damage.

    WARNING

    If damage is noted, do not attempt instrument operation.

    7. If any instrument component has been damaged in shipping, contact the freight carrier to report the

    damage and to file a damage report. Contact CEM Service or the nearest subsidiary or distributor to request service information.

    8. Verify that all accessories illustrated and listed are included.

    Power Conditioner

    9. Unpack the power conditioner and place it on the work bench or the floor as far away from the ORACLE magnet as possible.

    CAUTION

    Ensure that the power conditioner is not placed in close proximity with the ORACLE magnet to prevent demagnetization of the magnet.

    Note: CEM Corporation recommends that the ORACLE power cords be connected to electrical outlets and the power switches remain in the “on” position at all times. After 10 minutes of idle time, the touchscreen assumes a “sleep” mode. Note: The power cord below is applicable to the U.S. only. Power cords for instruments installed in other countries will be supplied based on electrical specifications for the applicable country.

    10. Remove the plastic cover from the balance.

    11. Place the balance on the workbench between the processor box (if applicable) and the power conditioner.

    12. Plug the power cord from the balance into one of the receptacles of the power conditioner.

    ORACLE Station

    13. Place the roll of Trac film on the roller.

    14. Place the roller and Trac film in the ORACLE Station so that the film will roll forward. 15. Place the ORACLE tubes in the openings of the back of the ORACLE Station.

    16. Place the sample tamper into one of the openings on the top of the ORACLE Station.

    17. Place the sample removal tool into the clips on the right side of the ORACLE Station (facing unit).

    Heater Blocks Every ORACLE will be supplied with a high precision CEM heater block to use for the temperature conditioning of samples or the heating of the various standards that are used to confirm the ORACLE’s functionality.

    18. Unbox the heater block and place it near the ORACLE, either on a shelf or the benchtop. Plug the heater block into a standard wall outlet.

    19. Power the heater block on, and use the arrows to set the temperature to the value indicated on the silver sticker (see below).

    20. Place the Oil Standard, Normalization Standard, and the Check Standard tube into the heater block. The

    heater block should remain on at all times to ensure consistent heating of these standard tubes.

    Bar Code Scanner

    21. Unbox the scanner and stand, following the included directions to connect the cable to the scanner and assemble the stand in a convenient area near the ORACLE system.

    22. Plug the barcode scanner into any of the remaining USB outlets on the back of the Processor Box. Once connected, the scanner is immediately ready to begin transmitting information to the ORACLE system.

    Cable Connections

    1. Plug the power cord of the power conditioner into the appropriate electrical outlet. Turn the power conditioner on, confirming it is working by the green light on the front of the conditioner.

    2. If using a SMART 6 for moisture analysis, first refer to the SMART 6 Operations Manual for installation and setup of the SMART 6.

    3. Once installed, plug the SMART 6 power cord into the power conditioner. Wait until connecting all

    ORACLE cables to connect the SMART 6 to the ORACLE processor box via the supplied green Ethernet cable, then proceed with powering the SMART 6 on.

    4. Following steps 5-16, carefully connect each cable provided in the cable kit and accessory kit. Ensure

    that each cable is connected properly. Use caution to prevent bending or damaging the pins of the connectors.

    5. Connect the BNC cable to the processor box and magnet.

    6. Connect the ground cable to the processor box and the magnet as illustrated. Ensure all washers are placed back on the screw prior to adding the nut.

    7. Connect the SMB long cable to the processor box and the magnet as illustrated below.

    8. Connect the shim cable to the processor box as illustrated below.

    9. Connect the crossover CAT 5 Ethernet cable to the processor box as illustrated below.

    10. Connect the monitor video cable to as illustrated below.

    16. Connect the Power cords to the ports on the back of the magnet and processor box. Plug both

    cords into the Power Conditioner, then turn the green switch on the processor box to the ON position.

    FOR SMART 6 USERS ONLY After following instructions to install the SMART 6 system in the SMART 6 manual, connect the SMART 6 to the ORACLE analyzer with the CAT5 Ethernet cable provided as illustrated below.

    Software Overview

    The ORACLE is primarily operated using a glass capacitance touchscreen interface, although certain operations will be carried out by the SMART 6 if it is being used for moisture analysis. This manual will only review the ORACLE software interface and the SMART 6 screens that relate to the ORACLE analysis. Please refer to the SMART 6 manual for an overview of the SMART 6 software screens. Login Upon boot up or activation from sleep mode, the software requires the user to login as either a Basic or Admin user. This user access is part of the CFR Title 21 Part 11 compliance for tracking system actions by a signature (in this case the login acts as the signature). User logins can be created for each individual using the ORACLE, or shared between users. Both Basic and Administrator access is password protected. Once logged in, the remainder of the ORACLE software is primarily accessed through the option menu in the top right corner. It contains access to all the primary functions of the ORACLE, including sample analysis, user access, diagnostic testing, and other system settings.

    Run Sample The Run Screen allows users quick access to sample analysis at any time. Simply choose the tab, then click through and apply the necessary labels to the sample, then begin testing. Samples can be analyzed one at a time or in large batches, depending on the process that best fits the workflow of the lab.

    Samples The ORACLE stores pertinent data for every sample test it has performed. Accessing the Sample Log will allow users to review a number of run parameters, such as fat result, moisture result (if connected to SMART 6), sample ID, date and time, user, tag, and initial weight.

    Maintenance ORACLE Maintenance consists of a variety of tests that validate and check system functionality. By running Certified Reference Materials (CRM), performing routine maintenance tests, or checking system hardware and processes via diagnostics, the ORACLE software has the ability to give users confidence in the system’s performance, and reduce down time in the event of an issue.

    Users To add new users, or edit the access privileges or passwords of current users, simply choose the Users tab. Administrators will have complete system access, including the ability to perform diagnostic tests, manage heater and balance connections, and other advanced system functionality, on top of the features Basic users are provided. Basic user will have access to running and reviewing samples, as well as exporting data. They will also have access to some basic maintenance and system settings, such as running diagnostics. Guests can log in without a password, and have the capability to run samples, view results, and export data.

    Instruments The Instruments tab consists of connection and functionality features for the QuikPrep heater and the balance connected to the ORACLE, if one is present, as well as parameters for the ORACLE magnet itself. The Quik Prep tab controls functionality of the QuikPrep integrated heater located on the top of the ORACLE magnet. The Balance Tab ensures proper connection and data transfer between the ORACLE and the balance. This allows the ORACLE to fully calculate data and provide results without the need for user input The Magnet tab allows users to review and reset certain parameters directly related to the functionality of the ORACLE magnet, specifically the magnet sensor threshold and F-lock interval setting. Users should not adjust these parameters unless specifically instructed to do so by a trained CEM specialist.

    Export Export gives the user the option to transfer data to a USB (6 ports on the ORACLE), for viewing data externally, such as on a laptop or PC. Users also have the option to transfer Diagnostic and Maintenance logs, which can lead to faster service and minimize system downtime in the event of any issues.

    Settings Any other system settings will be located in the Settings tab, including adjustment to the screen brightness, volume, screensavers, and service tools for advanced system troubleshooting.

    Header Icons Easily accessed and viewable from any screen, the header icons are quick looks for certain ORACLE functions. These include:

    - Magnet Temperature: indicates if magnet is operating out of optimal range. Red indicates that the magnet is above optimal operating temperature and blue indicates that it is below optimal operating temperature. By pressing the magnet temperature icon, a window will appear showing exactly how far off the temperature is from the optimal magnet temperature

    - QuikPrep Temperature: displays the actual

    temperature and set temperature of the QuikPrep heater at the top of the magnet. The icon will display a red bar/up arrow when warming up, and a blue bar/down arrow when cooling down. The QuikPrep heater will take approximately2 minutes to heat 10°C, and 10 minutes to cool 10°C

    - The Barcode Scanner, which displays the number of

    tests the current roll of Trac Film has left. The icon will display a yellow icon when there are 100 tests remaining, and a red icon when there are 20, as a reminder to purchase more film before it runs out. The user can scan in or manually enter a new barcode by pressing the Barcode icon, then the Scanner button.

    - This screen also allows the user to personalize the reminders, or use a One-Time Pass in the instance a barcode was lost or thrown away before being scanned.

    Note: The One-Time Pass can only be used once, and will not be available after it is used. If an issue occurs where a bar code is lost after having already used the One-Time Pass, please contact the Process Control Group at CEM Corporation

    - The balance icon indicates if the CEM supplied balance is connected and communicating with the ORACLE software. The balance is only for customers not using a SMART 6 for moisture content.

    - The SMART 6 icon indicates if the SMART 6 is connected and communicating with the ORACLE software. This is only for customers using the SMART 6 for rapid moisture analysis.

    SMART 6 Connection

    This section is for users with a SMART 6 system. If not using a SMART 6 to dry the sample prior to ORACLE analysis, please continue to the System Setup section. 1. After following instructions in the SMART 6 manual to

    set the system up, go to the Main Menu and choose Settings, then while on the System tab scroll to the bottom until the Trac IP Address option appears.

    2. Touch the IP Address entry bar and type the following IP address into the system. Once correctly entered, press the Save icon in the top right corner.

    3. Once the SMART 6 IP Address has been set, go to the ORACLE after it has been turned on and the software has appeared. Then log in under the Administrator user. The password (case-sensitive) is:

    4. Once logged in, confirm the ORACLE software has connectivity to the coreboard. This can be done by clicking on the magnet icon along the top of the ORACLE screen to check for magnet temperature. If XX is displayed, see page 70 for instructions on initiating the connection.

    5. If the ORACLE is communicating with the coreboard, access the menu through the Main Menu icon in the top right corner of the screen.

    6. Choose Settings, then Tools, then press the Exit button.

    7. Choose the Exit ORACLE button, after which a window will appear asking “Are you sure you want to Exit”, press Yes to close out the ORACLE software.

    8. Another window will then appear with 3 buttons, press the Start ORACLE button to activate the software.

    9. The ORACLE software will then reload and bring the user back to the login screen. Log in again as an Administrator using the details in step 3.

    10. After logging back in, go to the Main Menu icon and access Settings, then System. About halfway down there will be a SMART 6 option. Toggle this option so it is ON.

    11. Again go to the Main Menu icon and access Settings, then Tools. This time press the System button.

    12. Once in the System window, choose the Network tab on the side, which will bring up a window with two information boxes.

    13. One box should already be configured for Trac/Coreboard with an IP Address of 10.0.0.1. Do not change the configuration of this box, use the other box to continue with the remaining steps. Note: If the System Network icon has a red X over it, then the Ethernet cable connecting the SMART 6 and ORACLE is not correctly plugged in or functioning properly. If the cable is plugged into the correct port and there is still a red X, please contact CEM Service.

    14. Hit the gear button to access the pop-up menu, then choose the SET SMART 6 option to connect the SMART 6. This will set the IP Address connecting the ORACLE to the SMART 6 unit.

    15. This will be confirmed by the SMART 6 icon at the top of the screen going white. Alternatively, the SMART 6 should now display a white ORACLE magnet icon. If this icon doesn’t appear, or only appears grayed out, please reconfirm all of the previous steps, then contact a CEM representative.

    16. Once the ORACLE has been turned on and the software has appeared, log in under the Administrator user. The password (case-sensitive) is:

    17. Once logged in, access the menu through the Main

    Menu icon in the top right corner of the screen.

    18. Choose the Maintenance tab. Once chosen, the left side of the screen will list four tabs. Choose the Setup tab, followed by the Import Clone button

    19. Insert the CEM USB located in the Normalization Kit into the ORACLE Processor Box USB Port. NOTE: Ensure the NS number on the Normalization tube matches that on the USB flash drive. If the two numbers do not match, please contact CEM Corporation.

    20. Once the USB is plugged into the ORACLE Processor Box, highlight the USB drive listed in the window. Select Import to complete the process.

    21. Once the Clone file has been imported, choose the Auto Run option to perform a full System Setup.

    22. The Magnet Temperature Offset is set at CEM prior to shipment. Verify the value by lifting the QuikPrep cover and foam, where a silver sticker should list a corresponding temperature value. If the two values match, press Continue. If the value is different in the software, use the keyboard to type in the value on the magnet and press Update.

    23. Once the Magnet Offset Temperature is set, the ORACLE will prompt to place the Oil Tube in the magnet. Place the glass Oil Standard tube into the magnet, and press OK. Note: Ensure the Oil Standard is completely in the tube by gently pressing it down on the top once in the magnet. Note: The magnet will not begin shimming until the temperature has stabilized, which could take up to 6 hours. The magnet will then take an additional 0.5-8 hours to complete the Shimming process.

    24. Once the Shim process is complete, the final logs will be displayed under Recent Results. The system will also designate whether the results are passing by displaying a green check or failing by displaying a red X. If a red X appears, please contact your local CEM Service representative.

    25. Remove the Oil Standard from the magnet. Then insert the Normalization Standard in the magnet and press OK to start the Cal-Lock sequence. Cal-Lock should take less than 4 minutes to complete. Note: Before placing the Normalization standard in the magnet, inspect the glass swirl for any bubbles trapped between the oil. If bubbles are present, gently shake and rotate the tube until the bubbles are fully in the top of the glass swirl.

    26. Remove the Normalization Standard, and insert the Oil Standard into the magnet to begin Pulse Width. The Pulse Width test will take 8-10 minutes to fully complete. Results will be displayed in the results window once completed.

    27. The final step of System Setup is System Normalization. The Oil standard will need to be first removed from the ORACLE, then after approximately 20 minutes the system will request the Normalization Standard. Place the Normalization Standard in the magnet and press Ok. System Normalization takes over 1 hour to complete. Once the Normalization process is complete, the data will be logged in the results window. Note: Before placing the Normalization standard in the magnet, inspect the glass swirl for any bubbles trapped between the oil. If bubbles are present, gently shake and rotate the tube until the bubbles are removed.

    Note: Normalization will go through 4 separate stages, with each stage noted. The first two stages require the magnet to be empty of any tubes, and the temperature conditioning and last two stages require the Normalization tube to be placed in the magnet.

    Balance Setup – If Applicable

    Paired balance settings are configured in the software and balances prior to shipment. To connect the balance, choose the Instrument tab, the select Balance, and then touch the “Connect” button. In case of failure to connect, please review the balance settings below. Note: Settings are hardcoded in the ORACLE software and can only be changed in the balance. Currently, only Mettler balances are supported by the ORACLE software. Balance Configuration

    Note: The balance settings listed below are pre-programmed into the balance. 1. Access the Main Menu

    Press and hold the “Menu/Enter” button to access the Main Menu. 2. Navigate to the Interface Configuration Sub-menu.

    Press the “Scroll” button twice to access the “Interface” configuration sub-menu.

    Press the “Enter” button twice to enter the “Interface” configuration sub-menu to find the “Interface” configuration sub-menu. 3. Confirm or Edit the Interface Configuration settings.

    Press the “Scroll” button to scroll through the available settings.

    Press the “Enter” button to view the current value for the given setting .

    Press the “Scroll” button to edit current value for a given setting (if required).

    Press the “Enter” button to save the changes and return to the Interface configuration sub-menu current value for a given setting (if required). 4. Exit

    Press the “Clear/Exit” button twice to exit to the Main Menu.

    Sample Analysis Proper product sampling and preparation are critical to achieving optimal accuracy and precision using an ORACLE. Each sample has a unique composition, and therefore may require a unique preparation and application process. Listed below guidelines to optimize every analysis.

    Sampling o Proper sampling of any product type is necessary for a rapid analysis that accurately represents the

    entire production batch or line. Many standard procedures have been developed specific to each sample type by various agencies such as AOAC, USDA, or ASTM. Please reference each agency for the correct procedure before moving forward with analysis on an ORACLE.

    Preparation o Sample preparation should be practiced to ensure a homogenous sample is being analyzed. As with

    any chemical analysis, a homogenous sample leads to a more representative test, and better results when comparing duplicate results or reference chemistry.

    o Sample preparation can entail physical or chemical changes to the sample to improve analysis. If using a SMART 6, please contact the CEM Corporation Process Application group, or review the method note for the sample found at www.cem.com/SMART_6/resource_library.

    Weight o Consistent sample weight helps ensure precision and accuracy. While sample size can vary from 1.0

    grams to 5.0 grams depending on the type of product being tested, repeatability within the same sample is important to avoid burning or under-drying of a sample. All moisture methods, either using a SMART 6 or a reference analysis, List an acceptable weight range that should be followed for every analysis to optimize results.

    Glass Fiber Pads o The ORACLE uses CEM certified glass fiber sample pads to assist in rapid and accurate testing. The

    pads are specially designed to support the sample being tested without absorbing heat, but remaining porous enough to let moisture freely evaporate. Liquid samples (typically above 25% moisture) typically use 2 glass fiber sample pads to help

    retain heat in the sample and avoid splattering during the heating process. Dry samples (typically under 25% moisture) only require a single glass fiber sample pad for

    the analysis. Trac Film

    o Every sample analyzed in the ORACLE must be wrapped in the proprietary Trac Film. The film ensures that no sample is lost during the sample preparation procedure outlined in the ORACLE Station Sample Prep section, as well as protects the ORACLE tubes from incurring buildup of fat or oil over time.

    o The film was developed specifically for this purpose, and is manufactured with materials that will not interfere with the NMR process. Not using the Trac Film can lead to inaccurate results, as well as a voidance of the system’s warranty or service contract.

    Application o Also known as the sample spread technique, the application of a sample to the glass fiber sample

    pads is equally important in achieving optimal results. If using an Air Oven for initial drying and moisture analysis, follow the instructions provided in that techniques Standard Operating

    Procedure. If using the SMART 6 system, use one of the following four different sample spread techniques, based on the viscosity and moisture content of the sample:

    Pipette – for highly absorbent, high moisture samples (>85% moisture), simply pipette the

    sample into the center of the top sample pad. The sample will fully absorb into the pad within a few seconds, after which the analysis can begin.

    Example- milk

    Pipette, cover, and press – for slightly less absorbent products that still have a high moisture

    content, pipette the product into the center of the top sample pad, then cover the sample with the bottom sample pad to fully cover the product. Then gently use the Sample Press to spread the sample thinly and evenly between the two pads Example- cream

    Mound, cover, and press – for solid and semi-solid products, use a spatula to place the

    correct sample weight on the center of the top glass fiber sample pad while it is still on the balance pan. Then cover with the bottom sample pad and use the Sample Press to spread the product thinly and evenly. Ensure no product has pressed out of the two sample pads.

    Example- meat or cheese

    Powder – for low moisture samples in granular or powder form, the sample needs to be spread thinly and evenly for the most accurate and rapid analysis. This can be performed with a CEM template, which allows the user to easily add the exact same amount of product in the exact same form every time. The user can also mound the product on the pad and use the spatula to spread it evenly.

    ORACLE Station Sample Preparation

    1. Remove and place one sheet of Trac Film on the platform of the ORACLE Station.

    2. Place the square pad and sample in the center of the Trac Film. 3. Prepare the sample pad. Fold the left corner of the film and pad as illustrated. Fold the right corner. Pull the

    lower edge of the film and sample pad toward the top and begin to roll them into a tube.

    4. Position the wrapped tube and sample into the ORACLE tube. Carefully press the sample into the bottom of

    the tube with the ORACLE Station press. The sample should be pressed firmly to ensure that the sample is positioned in the appropriate analysis area.

    Note: The ORACLE Station has a window to verify the height of the sample in the tube.

    5. Gently place the ORACLE tube with the pressed sample pad into the ORACLE magnet or QuikPrep™.

    6. After the analysis is complete, press the sample pads out of the ORACLE tube using the sample removal rod and throw the used ORACLE pads in the trash.

    CEM High Precision Heater Block

    Consistent sample temperature is a critical component of an accurate and repeatable results in the ORACLE. In order to ensure that every sample analyzed in the ORACLE is at the proper sample temperature, CEM has developed and provides their own High Precision Heater Block. Standard market heater blocks can have temperature differences of up to 3°C between each individual hole, which would lead to poor results. CEM’s High Precision Heater Block utilizes a form-fitted insluator in order to reduce the temperature difference by 90%, down to 0.3°C, as well as a newly designed heating component that better fits the ORACLE tubes. Samples are typically conditioned for a minimum of 60 minutes at the preset temperature. The results from samples that are analyzed for shorter than 60 minutes cannot be guaranteed by CEM. If a more rapid temperature conditioning is required, please refer to the QuikPrep section of the manual about the option to use the QuikPrep integrated heater.

    The 12 place heater is provided for users that use a SMART 6 system for rapid moisture analysis, then need to condition their samples prior to analysis. It is compact so as not to take up too much benchtop area, but more accurate than any other available heater block.

    The 50 place heater is the ideal option for high-throughput labs that may be analyzing hundreds of samples a day. The improved temperature accuracy makes the CEM High Precision Heater Block the only viable option for accurate temperature conditioning.

    CEM QuikPrep Integrated Heater

    For users that require a rapid analysis as well as an accurate result, every ORACLE comes equipped with the QuikPrep integrated heater system in order to reduce temperature conditioning times for a single sample from 30 minutes to less than 1 minute. This patented technique is only offered by CEM, and gives the user the flexibility to quickly get a single result for faster process control and formulation changes. The QuikPrep heater includes a sensor to immediately determine when a sample has been placed in the heating area, ensuring each sample heats for the exact time required and reducing the potential for human error. Once the sample has been fully heated, a solenoid is activated to automatically drop the sample into the magnet at the optimal temperature, providing the best results in the fastest time possible. The heater is also equipped with LED lights that will blink or change color to easily indicate certain ORACLE functions throughout the testing process, such as Frequency Lock, Test Complete, System Ready, and more.

    Batch Testing on the ORACLE with a Convection or Vacuum Oven

    Before beginning any sample testing, ensure the product has been fully and properly prepared in order to obtain the best results. Improper sample preparation or tempering can reduce accuracy and repeatability. For further information on sample preparation, please refer to the standard reference procedure, or contact CEM Corporation Process Application Support (800) 726-3331. Batch testing is a procedure for temperature conditioning multiple samples simultaneously, followed by a rapid NMR analysis on each individual sample after they have been conditioned for a set period of time. This process is best suited for users with a large number of samples, and a work flow that requires less hands-on time from the user, but may take longer over the course of testing every sample. The samples should only be dried using AOAC approved (or similar) techniques to ensure complete sample dryness prior to analysis in the ORACLE. Failure to completely dry the sample can lead to inaccurate readings by the ORACLE.

    When testing with an Air Oven, the user can choose to use a balance connected to the ORACLE to record the initial weights of the samples that will be analyzed, or use a separate balance to record the initial weights and manually input them into the ORACLE after the sample moisture is recorded. If recording the weight separately, and drying the samples before entering any information into the ORACLE, first follow the instructions in Step 7 after the Air Oven analysis is complete, then begin at Step 1. If using the Balance connected to the ORACLE, or entering information before the Air Oven analysis, simply begin at Step 1.

    1. On the ORACLE, press the menu icon and choose Run.

    2. Press the large Run arrow to begin the sample analysis procedure.

    3. On the Sample Name page, the specific details for the upcoming analysis can be entered: - SAMPLE ID provides an identifier to best

    represent the sample that will be analyzed. If each sample needs a unique Sample ID, that can be set in the next screen.

    Note: The Sample ID can also be populated using the bar code scanner that is supplied with every ORACLE.

    - BATCHING should be turned Batch, and toggled

    to the number of samples that will be analyzed in this upcoming batch.

    - AUTO INCREMENT will assign an incremental number to the end of the Sample ID. This can be toggled ON or OFF to fit the user’s needs.

    4. Once all the values have been correctly entered, press the NEXT icon to continue.

    5. The total number of batches set in the BATCHING section of the Sample Name page will be listed. Here, each sample can be edited to provide a unique Sample ID and Tag. - The Play icon will begin the analysis for the

    individual sample chosen.

    - The Repeat Icon will duplicate the Sample ID and Tag, in the case too few samples were chosen in Step 3 and more are needed. The additional sample will be added to the list directly underneath the Sample ID from which the duplicate icon was chosen.

    - The Delete icon will delete any Sample ID in the case that too many were chosen in Step 3, or any other reason a sample must be removed from the testing process.

    6. At this time, the user can press the box containing the sample weight, and the system will attempt to register the sample weight. - If using the balance, choose Balance, follow the

    instructions on the screen to Tare the weight of the sample pad/film, then add the correct amount of sample to the pad/film and record the initial weight.

    - If manually inputting the weight, simply type the initial weight that was previously recorded, then press OK to save the weight.

    At this stage, if the samples have not been placed in the Air Oven to begin drying, do so now.

    7. Once the samples have been fully dried, follow the procedures outlined in the ORACLE Station Sample Preparation, then place each sample in the ORACLE tube into the heater block. Once all the samples have been completely prepared, begin a timer to ensure every sample is heated for the full optimized conditioning time.

    8. Once the samples have been fully heated, press the Play icon next to the corresponding Sample ID first assigned in Step 1.

    9. The ORACLE will first perform a Frequency Lock to remove the variance of any environmental or magnet temperature factors. This frequency lock is critical to achieving the absolute best results, even in less than optimal situations.

    10. Then following the instructions on the screen, remove the sample from the heater block and place the sample in the ORACLE magnet. The ORACLE will automatically detect that the sample is present, then run a set number of scans on the sample. After 35 seconds of analysis, the ORACLE will display the final % Fat result.

    QuikPrep Analysis on the ORACLE with an Air or Vacuum Oven

    Before beginning any sample testing, ensure the product has been fully and properly prepared in order to obtain the best results. Improper sample preparation or tempering can reduce accuracy and repeatability. For further information on sample preparation, please refer to the standard reference procedure, or contact CEM Corporation Process Application Support (800) 726-3331. QuikPrep refers to the integrated heater located on the top of the ORACLE magnet. It allows the user to rapidly condition the sample to the necessary temperature, providing the final result much quicker than a standard temperature conditioning with an external heater block. The QuikPrep will automatically transfer the sample into the ORACLE for analysis at the end of its conditioning time, and is beneficial to users that require faster individual results, but requires slightly more hands on time from the user.

    When testing with an Air Oven, the user can choose to use the ORACLE to record the initial weights of the samples that will be analyzed, or use a separate balance to record the initial weights and manually input them into the ORACLE after the sample moisture is recorded.

    1. On the ORACLE, press the menu icon and choose Run.

    2. Press the large Run arrow to begin the sample analysis procedure

    Note: If using the balance, choose Balance, follow the instructions on the screen to Tare the weight of the sample pad/film, then add the correct amount of sample to the pad/film and record the initial weight.

    Note: If manually inputting the weight, simply choose Manual and type the initial weight that was previously recorded, then press the Next icon to continue.

    - AUTO INCREMENT will assign an incremental number to the end of the Sample ID. This can be toggled ON or OFF to fit the user’s needs.

    4. Once all the values have been correctly entered, press the NEXT icon to continue.

    At this stage, if the samples have not been placed in the Air Oven to begin drying, do so now. 5. Once the samples have been fully dried, follow the procedures outlined in the ORACLE Station Sample

    7. Place the ORACLE tube in the QuikPrep heater at the top of the ORACLE magnet. QuikPrep contains a sensor that will automatically detect the sample is present, and begin heating the sample for a predetermined length of time.

    8. Once the QuikPrep temperature conditioning is complete, the ORACLE will automatically drop the sample into the ORACLE magnet, and begin running a set number of scans on the sample. After35 seconds of analysis, the ORACLE will provide the final % Fat result.

    QuikPrep Analysis on the ORACLE with a SMART 6

    Before beginning any sample testing, ensure the product has been fully and properly prepared in order to obtain the best results. Improper sample preparation or tempering can reduce accuracy and repeatability. For further information on sample preparation, please refer to the SMART 6 video on sample preparation, or contact CEM Corporation Process Application Support (800) 726-3331.

    1. Starting from the home screen of the SMART 6, choose either Classic Method or One Touch Method, based on the method you will be running. For an explanation on the difference between Classic and One Touch Methods, please refer to the Method Creation and Editing section of the manual. The ORACLE software will instruct you to begin the test through the SMART 6 Moisture analyzer. If using a SMART 6 to test samples for moisture prior to using the ORACLE for Fat analysis, all keystrokes are done through the SMART 6 software interface.

    2. From the list of methods, choose the ORACLE method that has been developed for the sample that will be analyzed. Method icons will differ based on the type of analysis. ORACLE methods, which analyze moisture and fat, will contain an icon of the ORACLE magnet.

    Once a Fat analysis method has been chosen, the ORACLE screen will automatically change screens and read “start new sample from SMART 6”.

    3. If it is necessary, press the Sample ID button to add in a unique ID up to 24 characters for the sample that is being analyzed before continuing with any of the SMART 6 sample analysis procedure. If no Sample ID is entered, the system will auto-increment each new sample by 1.

    Following the instructions on the screen, use the gray cover handle to lift the SMART 6 cover and center 1 or 2 CEM glass fiber Sample pads on the balance pan, depending on the sample preparation designated for the product.

    4. Close the SMART 6 cover, and press the green TARE button on the screen

    5. Once the sample pads have been tared, add the correct amount of sample to the pad and spread the product using the proper sample spread technique. The sample bar representing sample weight will change from BLUE to GREEN when it is within the designated Sample Weight range created during method development *If you are unsure how to add the correct amount of sample, or the correct sample spread technique, please refer to the videos titled “How to Run a Sample” for assistance.     6. After the sample has been added and properly spread, again center the pads on the balance pan, gently close the SMART 6 cover, and press the START button. The system will automatically record a stable initial weight, and the SMART 6 will then begin its heating procedure based on the parameters for the method that was chosen. If the system does not change screens within 30 seconds of pressing start, press

    the STOP key and contact CEM Service (800) 726-5551.

    7. During the test, the user can choose two different screens for viewing – Simple – This screen will only present the Moisture or Solids result during the testing process – Advanced – This screen will include the weight, Sample ID, drying curve and all testing parameters specific to the method. No values are able to be altered while the test is running.

    8. Once the sample has reached its optimal dry weight, the system will stop heating and begin cooling (if designated) the sample to the optimal temperature for analysis. Not every sample will require cooling. The amount of cooling will be initially determined during the method development of the SMART 6 moisture analysis.

    9. Once the sample has been cooled, the system will prompt to “Continue”

    For users with a SMART 6, it is recommended to use the QuikPrep analysis as it provides a more rapid result. To use QuikPrep, press Start and follow the instructions below.

    10. Prepare (wrap) the sample in accordance with the instructions in the “ORACLE Station Sample Preparation” section of this manual.

    11. If there is an ORACLE tube from a previous analysis in the ORACLE, it must first be removed.

    12. Place the ORACLE tube in the QuikPrep heater at the top of the ORACLE magnet. QuikPrep contains a sensor that will automatically detect the sample is present, and begin heating the sample for a predetermined length of time.

    13. The ORACLE will then heat the sample accordingly, before automatically dropping it into the magnet for fat analysis. Please do not use either interface during this brief period of sample analysis, unless to cancel the test by pressing the X in the top left corner of the screen.

    14. After conditioning the sample to the correct temperature, the ORACLE will begin the process of analyzing the sample. The ORACLE will analyze each sample for 35 seconds before giving the final result.

    15. Once the scans are complete, the results will appear on the SMART 6 screen.

    Note: This results screen shows both (fat and moisture) results. Simply use the arrows to the right and left of the result to scroll through Moisture, Solids, and Fat results.

    SMART 6 Method Development

    To ensure accurate and repeatable results on the ORACLE, an accurate drying step is required prior to the analysis. When using the SMART 6 for a rapid moisture analysis, it is important to optimize the drying parameters before using the ORACLE for fat analysis. Many of the parameter adjustments can be found in the SMART 6 Manual, however the following steps are specific to users with a SMART 6 connected to an ORACLE.

    1. After choosing to create a new method and setting the Test type to Moisture/Fat, two ORACLE specific settings will appear

    - Cooling refers to the SMART 6 running the fans

    after the moisture analysis to cool the sample to a set temperature before removing the sample from the SMART. Cooling will automatically be set to off, and should only be turned on and adjusted at the request of a CEM Applications Specialist.

    - The ORACLE settings are specific to the QuikPrep integrated heater at the top of the magnet. The standard settings for most products is 70 °C for 30 seconds. Similar to cooling, this should only be adjusted at the request of a CEM Applications Specialist.

    Data Management Every ORACLE is equipped with a variety of options to store and review data. It comes equipped with an internal database which can store a large number of results that can be recalled and analyzed as needed by the user. Data can also be sent to different external databases, or LIMS networks. Furthermore, results from the ORACLE can be statistically analyzed and provide result averages, standard deviations, and production trends and graphs quickly and easily. Internal Data Management The ORACLE has the ability to store data for further review. In order to find specific data points more easily, the users has the ability to sort and filter results based on the user, the sample ID or tag, or the time and date of analysis. 1. From the Main Menu icon, choose the Samples

    tab.

    2. A list of every sample that has been analyzed on the ORACLE will appear. A quick search of samples is listed on the left of the screen, and further details about each individual test will appear on the right as the sample is chosen.

    3. To expedite the process of finding specific samples, the list can be condensed by sorting or filtering by a number of parameters.

    4. The ORACLE also has the ability to generate and display statistical analysis on results. By pressing the Statistics icon, the ORACLE will provide users with the option of selecting certain data points to not only produce statistical analyses such as Average, Range, Minimum and Maximum, and Standard Deviation.

    5. The ORACLE will also display a Statistical Process Control chart on which the user can set upper and lower spec limits to ensure that all results are within the acceptable specification for that product. Data can be sort and filtered for statistical analysis as well.

    External Data Management While the ORACLE can easily store, filter, review, and export data, some users will prefer to maintain data externally. CEM has provided two options to allow each user the flexibility in data management that they require. LIMS Networking For companies that are looking to streamline and integrate all of their process control equipment using a LIMS managerial network, the ORACLE is fully equipped to communicate with many formats of LIMS systems. For High Throughput ORACLE users, choose the Settings tab from the Main Menu, then under the SAMPLE header, scroll to reach LIMS output. Press the slider to turn the output option ON, which will automatically bring up a new window to set the necessary output settings for the LIMS network - Once the correct settings are logged, a test can be sent

    to the LIMS Network by pressing the Send Test Results button. If the test sample goes through, press Save Configuration to begin sending data through the LIMS Network.

    For users with a SMART 6 and ORACLE, please refer to the SMART 6 manual for instructions on how to connect to a LIMS network, as communication must flow through the SMART 6.

    Data Export The ORACLE allows any Administrator to export various information to a USB in a format that can then be dropped into various programs for further analysis. The system also has the capability to export Diagnostic or Maintenance logs to be sent to CEM for expedited servicing and repair of the ORACLE, reducing down time and providing the user with confidence their system is working as expected.

    1. In order to export any data from the ORACLE, a suitable USB must first be plugged into one of the ports on the front of the ORACLE Processor Box.

    2. Once a USB has been plugged in and selected on the screen, the user should select Sample Results to export the results from the ORACLE in a .csv format, which can be easily imported into and review in an Excel spreadsheet or similar database.

    Users have the option to export results that are individually chosen, filtered by certain variables, or export all data on the system.

    ORACLE Maintenance CEM recommends running full “Diagnostics” once per month to ensure your ORACLE is operating at peak performance. Diagnostics tests all electrical components of the system to verify that the magnet and processor (computer) are properly operating. Additionally, the ORACLE includes several “QC Tests” as outlined below that can be utilized to verify samples are within specification, as well as magnet stability.

    QC Tests

    The ORACLE provides a series of QC Tests that allow the user to ensure total system functionality, verified using Certified Reference Materials, sealed check standard tubes, and short and long term magnet stability. The QC Tests can be accessed through the Main Menu by choosing Maintenance. Each test can be individually run, and each vary in length of analysis time and the frequency of which they should be performed.

    QC Standards Requires part number 523010 (optional accessory) For best results, please ensure your ORACLE has been

    properly setup and has passed all diagnostics tests prior to completing the QC Standards test calibration.

    The QC Standards test is designed to help ensure your ORACLE results stay within specification across a range of fat levels. This test must be calibrated using four standards containing different amounts of oil (nominally 10, 20, 50, and 80 %) which are designed to mimic the fat content of actual food samples. The calibration procedure takes approximately 90 minutes, and consists of three phases whereby each standard is analyzed three times in order to obtain the most accurate results. Each set of standards are designated with a serial number to ensure facilities with multiple standards do not accidentally use the incorrect standard to produce a false failure. Ensure all four Standard tubes have matching serial numbers before each analysis. In addition to the QC Standard Tubes, the Normalization tube provided with every ORACLE must be tested. To analyze the QC Standards, first ensure all four tubes have been temperature conditioned in the heater block for a minimum of 1 hour. For initial setup and future maintenance tests, simply follow the instructions on screen to add each individual tube for a brief analysis, upon which the ORACLE software will label the results as passing with a green check, or failing with a red X. In the event of a failure, please follow the instructions in this manual for running the Diagnostic Tests, then contact CEM’s service department.

    CRM Certified Reference Materials (or CRM’s) are considered the gold standard for method validation. These food samples have been analyzed by several certified laboratories following internationally accredited reference methods. They represent different matrices and compositions and provide unbiased and accurate compositional values to confidently verify methods. CEM recommends running CRM’s periodically on the ORACLE as an internal validation procedure that can used for ISO and other accreditation purposes. In order to properly analyze CRM’s in the ORACLE, it is essential that these samples be conditioned in a CEM High Precision Heater Block at the temperature designated on each individual heater block for 45 minutes prior to analysis. CRM’s that are 12% moisture and higher should be dried in an air or vacuum oven following certified procedures prior to conditioning in the CEM High Precision Heater Block.

    CRM’s can be sourced from a variety of laboratories worldwide. CEM recommends sourcing these samples from Muva Kempton in Germany or LGC, a worldwide company. For more information on sourcing CRM’s or contact information for CRM providers, please send an email to [email protected].

    Short Term Stability The Short Term Stability test measures the peak to peak difference of signal amplitude (of a Normalization Standard) over the course of approximately 4 hours. The purpose of this test is to confirm the internal components of the magnet are performing optimally, as well as to check for any environmental interference. Note- This test should only be run if instructed by CEM Service personnel as the ORACLE magnets are highly stable and should not drift over time.

    Long Term Stability The Long Term Stability test measures the peak to peak difference of signal amplitude (of a Normalization Standard) over the course of approximately 14 hours. The purpose of this test is to confirm magnet performance over an extended period of time and determine any possible trends in external interferences (eg. power, temperature, EMF, etc). Note- This test should only be run if instructed by CEM Service personnel as the ORACLE magnets are highly stable and should not drift (resulting in in-homogeneity) over time.

    Diagnostics The ORACLE software contains a diagnostic testing procedure that runs a number of tests to ensure the hardware and software components are all functioning within each parameters specified range. Each test can be run individually, or all of the diagnostic tests can be run at once by using the Auto Run option. The total test time for the Auto Run is only 30 minutes, and requires the use of the Oil Standard tube for a number of tests. Every test result provides a value that is compared to the internal passing specifications of the unit. If a test result is within the passing range, it will give a green check mark. If it is outside the passing range, it will be designated by a red X. Note: In the event of a failure, please complete the remaining Diagnostics tests, then follow the instructions to export the Diagnostic Data in the manual and contact your local CEM service representative.

    The Diagnostics Tests should be used as directed by a certified CEM representative or as part of a Standard Operating Procedure. Unless specifically direct otherwise, it is suggested to run the full Auto Run procedure, a 30 minute process that will run each of the 10 Diagnostic tests. The system will routinely ask the user to either place a standard tube in the magnet, or to remove it. It is imperative to follow these directions exactly. The user will need to use the glass or Teflon Oil Standard, p/n 160065. To review past Diagnostic results on the ORACLE, Choose the History tab. Every results from QC Tests, Diagnostics, and Setup will be displayed. Results can be filtered using the Sort/Filter option on the bottom of the screen.

    Exporting System Diagnostics

    Under the Export tab, there are three options. 1. Screen Captures – Tapping the bottom right corner of

    the ORACLE screen three times will take a screenshot of the current screen, which can be exported and sent to CEM.

    2. System Data - Used for exporting and storing all of the system information necessary to run, including Setup data, sample logs, methods, and other necessary information.

    3. Sample Results – All previous results can be exported to

    the USB for external review and storage, either all at once or by user selection.

    To export, simply plug a USB into the Processor Box and follow the on-screen instructions.

    Routine Maintenance Each ORACLE comes with a Routine Maintenance check sheet, which will review the maintenance needs of the SMART and ORACLE. While the ORACLE will maintain logs of certain maintenance procedures, it is recommended to use the check sheet for personal reminders of previous and upcoming maintenance needs, as well as aid a service technician in understanding the level of maintenance the system has received. Daily

    1. Inspect the sample probe for excessive dust or loose sample. If any sample has fallen into the probe, please contact the local CEM service provider for cleaning.

    Weekly

    1. Clean the Air filter located in the Processor Box. Unscrew the thumbscrew in the middle of the underside of the vent, gently pull out the blue vent cover, and then remove the filter. Using purified water or a pressurized air source, clean off any dust that has built up on the filter, then return to the processor box before replacing the vent cover. If using water to clean the filter, be sure the filter is completely dry before placing it back in the Processor Box.

    Monthly

    1. Run all Diagnostics tests (select “Auto Run”) and confirm all tests pass. If any tests fail, please contact your local CEM Service representative.

    ORACLE Settings

    The ORACLE system comes equipped with a number of adjustable settings to optimize the user experience as well as settings that pertain to sample analyses and system functionality. Within the Settings folder, there are two sections that are available to all users:

    Sample System

    There are an additional three settings that are only available to Administrators:

    Backup Tools Event Viewer

    Sample The sample settings are in place to provide the user with various options during the run as well as adjust certain testing parameters to optimize the ORACLE analysis for specific sample types. While certain settings are applied system-wide, others are specific to certain samples as indicated.

    Sample Tags – Sample tags can be added to individual tests as a way to further identify and group certain samples being analyzed. This is especially useful on the sample results screen, where grouping samples by product type may be desired.

    Auto Optimize – Auto Optimize is a system wide internal process where the ORACLE will automatically determine if a sample contains low levels of fat, and optimize the signal to those levels. This will increase analysis time by approximately 1.5 minutes and has shown to increase repeatability and accuracy for certain samples.

    High Temperature Mode – Some samples will require a higher temperature for optimal analysis. Please only activate High Temperature Mode if

    instructed by a CEM specialist and supplied complete High Temperature use instructions.

    Fat Dry – This will calculate the % Fat based on the sample mass after drying, rather than the initial weight.

    LIMS output – This can be activated to send data to an external LIMS database. Data will be sent through the ORACLE in the High Throughput configuration. For users with a SMART 6 connected to the ORACLE, LIMS output should be handled by the SMART.

    QuikPrep conditioning time – For high throughput users, this will be the length of time the sample sits in the QuikPrep heater before beginning analysis in the ORACLE. Note- this should be set to “0” when paired with the SMART 6 as QuikPrep is set through SMART 6 method development parameters.

    QuikPrep conditioning temperature – This will set the temperature a sample is heated at while in the QuikPrep heater. For optimizing both time and temperature of the QuikPrep, please consult the CEM Process Applications team. Note- QuikPrep temperature should always at 45°C when not in use for sample analysis.

    Fat Bias – This will set a bias for every result produced by the ORACLE if necessary to match historic data. Note- CEM does not endorse or recommend the use of a bias.

    Sample mass precision – This will adjust the precision of the sample mass gathered by the external balance for calculating sample weight before ORACLE analysis.

    Normalization Data – This will produce the raw signal data from the Normalization tests performed during setup. This should only be accessed at the request of a CEM trained specialist.

    System The “System” settings are used to record and control ORACLE information and connections, along with basic user interface controls.

    Magnet S/N – This logs the serial number for the ORACLE magnet should for record keeping.

    Processor S/N - This is where the serial number for the ORACLE Processor box should be logged for record keeping.

    System Time – This is used to set the correct time for the ORACLE so it is accurately reflected in sample logs.

    Volume – This adjusts the volume of the speakers for videos and other auditory cues on the ORACLE.

    SMART 6 – This setting must be turned “ON” in order for the ORACLE to connect with a SMART 6 moisture/solids analyzer. Note- this setting should be “OFF” for high throughput users without a SMART 6.

    Automation: Use Robot – Setting this “ON” will allow the ORACLE to connect with the High Throughput Robot option.

    Simulate Instruments – Turning this on will allow users to mimic the ORACLE performance without actually running any samples, and is primarily used as a sales and demonstration tool.

    Service Mode – This will allow CEM trained specialists to have additional access to certain system parameters and functions as necessary for servicing or optimizing the ORACLE.

    Screen Saver – This can be used to adjust the time in minutes until the ORACLE screensaver is activated since the last time the touchscreen was touched.

    ‘Recent Results’ age filter – This will change the number of results that appear in the ‘Recent Results’ page.

    Backup The ORACLE has the ability to save specific data to the ORACLE hard drive as a backup and can be used to restore that information in the case of a future power outage or hardware failure. The “backup” settings list the various information users can save and restore as necessary.

    NML Backup – Saves the Normalization data for storage.

    NML Import – This is used to restore or reset the normalization data to a previous state.

    System Data Backup – This will create a backup of all system and setup parameters on an ORACLE.

    System Data Import – This can be used to reset and restore all system and setup parameters to their original state.

    Tools The “Tools” section is used to control the ORACLE software package.

    System – System settings related to hardware and network settings. This should only be accessed during system setup and at the request of a CEM trained specialist. Note- this is the location of the ORACLE IP Address that is used to pair the system to the SMART 6.

    Reset Data – This will wipe all data and previous analyses from the system. Users will have to accept by this change (by selecting “Continue”) before proceeding forward.

    Exit – This is used to Exit the ORACLE software platform, restart the operating system, or shutdown the entire software interface. This should only be used during the initial installation (per the installation instructions), prior to powering down the system electronics and magnet to prevent any file corruption, or at the request of a CEM trained specialist.

    Update Application – This icon is used to update the software if a new version is released. Simply copy the new software to a USB, plug the USB into the ORACLE processor, then press the button and follow the directions to upgrade the system.

    Event Viewer The “event viewer” is a tool used by CEM service and applications personnel to track and determine the possible cause of certain system issues. Event Viewer should only be accessed at the request of a CEM trained specialist.

    Service and Repair It is recommended that service and repair by the user be limited to replacing components such as fuses, printed circuit boards, interlocks, filters, etc. The user may find it convenient to stock an assortment of replacement parts to facilitate service procedures.

    WARNING

    The SMART System utilizes high voltage and microwave radiation. Instrument service and repair must be undertaken only by technicians trained in the repair and maintenance of high voltage and microwave power systems.

    To avoid possible electrical shock or exposure to microwave energy, disconnect the instrument from the electrical outlet prior to any disassembly procedures. Prior to troubleshooting or replacement of any component in the high voltage section of the SMART System, the instrument must be switched off and unplugged from the electrical outlet. Permit the instrument to sit idle for at least two (2) minutes. Using a well-insulated screwdriver, touch the end of the screwdriver between the terminals of the high voltage capacitor (illustrated below) to discharge all residual voltage from the instrument.

    Configure ORACLE for Coreboard connectivity. (Version 1.3.4 and higher)

    1. Unplug the SMART 6 Ethernet cable if connected to the processor box. Only the Coreboard Ethernet cable should be plugged into the motherboard.

    2. Enter Service Mode. (see Appendix A) 3. Go to Menu settings tools. 4. Click on System button. 5. Click on Network button. 6. 2 boxes will be displayed. 1 box for each Network Interface. 1 box should be grayed out indicating a

    disconnected/unplugged state. 7. The other box will be labelled with one of the following: Ethernet, Ethernet 2, or TRAC. 8. Click the Gear icon and select Set TRAC. 9. If successful, the IP Address will be set to 10.0.0.1. 10. Click the Back button. 11. Go to Menu settings tools. 12. Click Exit. 13. Click Re-Start O.S. 14. Click Yes.
