When applied to the cornea, the inherent properties of the amniotic membrane promote healing by providing an excellent substrate for growth, migration, and adhesion of epithelial corneal and conjunctival cells. This symposium will review the newer sutureless amniotic membranes that are available for optometric use and discuss their current indications (including dry eye, recurrent corneal erosions and neurotrophic keratitis). We will specifically describe how to properly insert and remove the tissues, and will conclude the lecture with a live demonstration.
