Background:Microfluidicsdealswiththemanipulationoffluids inchannelswithdimensionsoftensof
micro meters and has emerged as a distinct new field, and chipbased systems with applications in
chemical synthesis, biological analysis, medical diagnostics, optics and information technology are
commonlyused.SocalledLabona Chipdeviceshavebeendevelopedforfast,accurateandportable
analytical applications, especially for medical diagnosis. Microfluidics provide excellent conditions for
performingbiologicalexperimentsonsinglecellsorsmallpopulationsofcells,especially to investigate
phenomenasuchascellularheterogeneityincellpopulation,stochasticgeneandproteinexpressionetc.
Aboutus:TheMicroScaleBioengineeringGroupispartoftheInstituteofBio andGeosciences(IBGI),located at the Research Center Juelich (Forschungszentrum Jlich GmbH). Our aim is to developcuttingedgemicrofluidicsystemstostudybiologicalprocessesatsinglecelllevel.
Projectdescription:Inthisproject,youwillimproveamicrofluidicchipsystemforsinglecellanalysisofbacteria.The focuswillbeon theoptimizationofbacteria trappingand culturingparameters (e.g.oxygenandnutrientsupplyetc.)for longtimegrowthexperimentsonsinglecell level.Additionally,the
growthbehaviorofdifferentproductionstrainsshouldbecomparedandanalyzed fordifferentgrowth
pattern.Dependingonyourinterestandknowledgewewilltailoryourpersonalproject.
Requirements:Weare lookingforexcellentandhighlymotivatedcandidatesstudying:biotechnology,bioengineering, (bio)chemical engineering, biochemistry, applied (bio)physicsor similar in their finalyear. The candidate should have a strong interest in multidisciplinary research. Knowledge of basic
microbiologicalskillsismandatory.Firstexperienceinfermentationand/culturingofbacteriawillbean
advantage.Experiencesinmicrofluidicswillbehelpful.WorkinglanguageisEnglishand/orGerman.
