W arm congratulations to our badminton teams on a
wonderful performance last week. Also, well done
to everyone in Year 11 for responding so well to
the ‘Mock GCSE Results Day’.
It is always impressive to listen to the plans of Year 11. Almost
all have applied for a college place and every one of them has a
sense of direction and plans for a way forward. Thank you for
your support.
Today Year 7 watched an interactive play called ‘Virtual
Reality’ by Paul Stevens, which aims to teach them how to use
social media and the internet safely. It appears that the national
media and the Government are beginning to understand the
damage that can be done when young people spend too long in
front of their screens. For pupils who stray too far into the
‘virtual’ world, which has equal power to do good or evil, it
can become impossible to keep a full perspective on reality.
At Chulmleigh we do not allow pupils to use phones or tablets
to communicate whilst at school and insist that phones are
switched off and out of sight. I have no doubt that one of the
reasons our pupils are so successful, is that we have your
overwhelming
support to focus
on wholesome
educational
activities that lead
to real (not
virtual) success in
sport, arts, drama,
music and
academic study.
We break up for
half term on
Friday, I hope you
all have an
enjoyable and restful week and look forward to welcoming
everyone back on Monday 25th February.

COLLEGE TEAMS WIN THREE OF FOUR COUNTY
BADMINTON TITLES
O n Wednesday 6th February, Chulmleigh College pupils
travelled to Paignton Community & Sports Academy Hub for
the Badminton England Devon County Championships.
Out of four County Champion places for the upcoming Regional Finals,
Chulmleigh took a record three, the best result in College history!
The KS3 Girls Team (I. O’Callaghan, B. Suliauskas, V. Warren, S.
Aldrich) started with a hard fought win against Exmouth 3-2. They
then followed this with a more emphatic win against QE 4-1, another
tough match against Clyst Vale 3-2, and finally a 5-0 triumph over
Uffculme.
The KS3 Boys ‘A’ Team (H. Herkes, R. Dawson, E. Dawson, F. Elson)
had a truly exceptional day, only dropping one game out of the 35 they
played. They beat The Kings, CCC ‘B’, Clyst Vale ‘A’, Clyst Vale ‘B’,
Uffculme and Torquay Academy all by the score of 5-0, with the other
match being a 4-1 victory against a strong Exmouth team.
The KS4 Girls Team (L. Herkes, E. O’Callaghan, Z. Le Feuvre, L.
Patmore) started the competition with their most difficult match,
against a QE team that reached last year’s National Finals. The girls
fought hard in all five games with Learna winning her singles, Eleanor
and Lauren the first doubles, and Learna and Eleanor clinching the
match with a second doubles win, ensuring a 3-2 victory. The
remaining matches were all very straightforward with 5-0 wins against
Uffculme, Exmouth and The Kings.
The most competitive and demanding event of the day was the KS4
Boys tournament, where ten teams entered involving nine matches and
45 games, with each player playing 18 games.
The KS4 Boys ‘A’ Team (R. Warren, A. Beel, M. Upright, W. Auty)
hoped to follow up last year’s successes at county, regional and
national competitions with another tilt at medals, but knew that
competing against stronger and wiser Year 11 pupils would be a
difficult task. The boys won their first eight matches beating Tiverton
‘B’, Wellington, Exmouth, Tiverton ‘A’, Chulmleigh ‘B’ and Torquay
Academy all 5-0. They also produced a 4-1 victory against Uffculme
and a hard fought 3-2 win against Clyst Vale. A win in their final match
against a strong The Kings team would have secured another county
title for the boys, but unfortunately, the number of games finally caught
up with them and they went down to a 4-1 defeat.
Three teams finished up with a playing record of eight wins and one
loss – The Kings, Exmouth and Chulmleigh ‘A’. To decide the
outcome, the judges added up the number of actual games won by
each team. Exmouth were eliminated from the competition, having
won fewest games and finished the day in third place. The Kings and
Chulmleigh ‘A’ had both won 38 out of 45 and so the outcome of the
tournament went to the head-to-head result between the two teams,
and unfortunately the final 1-4 loss cost the ‘A’ team the championship.
All teams played well on the day, with 5th place for both the KS3 and
KS4 Boys’ B Teams.
The KS4 Boys ‘B’ Team (C. Suliauskas, L. Bainbridge, M. Kneller, S.
Williams) produced 5-0 wins against Tiverton ‘A’ and Torquay
Academy and a 4-1 victory against Tiverton ‘B’. They then recorded a
3-2 defeat against Uffculme, 4-1 losses against Exmouth, The Kings,
Clyst Vale and Wellington, with their only 5-0 defeat coming against
Chulmleigh ‘A’.
The KS3 Boys ‘B’ Team (M. Vincent, J. Harrison, J. Webber, D.
Upright) had an excellent day winning four matches and losing three.
They beat Clyst Vale ‘A’ 5-0, Uffculme 5-0, Clyst Vale ‘B’ 5-0 and The
Kings 5-0, losing against Torquay Academy 1-4, Exmouth 0-5 and CCC
‘A’ 0-5.

PUPILS TAKE PART IN BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY
ORCHESTRA PROJECT
T he College Orchestra recently took part
in The Devon Music Education Hub’s
(DMEH) project with the Bournemouth
Symphony Orchestra (BSO), which involved an
afternoon of rehearsals culminating in a high
profile evening concert at Exeter University
Great Hall on 30th January. Musicians from
across the region rehearsed works selected
from the ‘BBC Ten Pieces’ with BSO conductor
Maxime Tortelier, who flew in from Paris
especially in the morning (grandson of cellist
Paul Tortelier!).
The snow caused transport difficulties and only
14 musicians, rather than the planned 36,
managed to get there – transported by parents
rather than the school bus!
However, the whole event was still a fantastic experience
for those involved: joining 150 other school musicians to
form a massed orchestra playing the ‘Horn Concerto’ by
Mozart, ‘Toreador’s Song’ by Bizet and the ‘Hall of the
Mountain King’ by Grieg.
Pupils also got the chance to watch “Resound” in action:
the world’s first professional classical disabled-led
ensemble embedded with the BSO. Their performance
was of a very high musical standard and pupils were in
awe of the skills of all musicians: in particular, James Rose
the conductor, who has cerebral palsy but conducts with
a baton attached to his glasses, and the flute player, who
is blind and memorises a braille score. Other ensemble
members are autistic or have physical disabilities.
Comments from pupils include:
“It was great fun and a good experience being in such a big
orchestra. I also really enjoyed seeing the disabled orchestra,
which was very inspiring. My favourite part was when we performed.” Martha Newman, Trumpet.
“I really enjoyed being part of an orchestra so big, playing alongside so many young musicians. I learned to listen to all the other
players and to watch the conductor” Lucy Webber, Flute.

RUGBY V ILFRACOMBE YEAR 7 & 8 Year 7 Rugby team win again!
On Tuesday 5th February the Year 7 team produced another excellent performance
to defeat Ilfracombe by 11 tries to 3.
The first half was strewn with handling errors and positional mistakes, but after a half
time 'chat' the second half performance improved.
A special mention to Jack Baugh, who stepped in at the last minute because of a
shortage of numbers, to play his first game of contact rugby and performed brilliantly.
Tries: Harry Woodman (3), J. Tithecott (3), M. Phillips (2), T. Ayre, K. Baglow, F. Barlow.
MoM: Harry Woodman
Much-improved Year 8!
The Year 8 team also played their second fixture of the year and produced a much-improved
performance.
The Year 8 team are very much on a steep learning curve, and the many new players are making vast
improvements in their understanding and game-play.
The Year 8s lost by 5 tries to 2, against a much bigger and experienced Ilfracombe team.
Tries: Tom Cooper & Tom Fisher.
MoM: Tom Fisher – absolutely outstanding in only his second match, huge potential!
