From the President’s DeskBill Elwell

First, let me say thank you to a few people. A big thanks goes out to Dan Kalinski for organizing the spring car collection tour in May. Don Knievel put together our Tacoma Yacht Club Charity car show event and club meeting. Finally, Bob Becken has spent, literally, months working with folks from various other regions to organize our portion of the Zone 6 Grand Tour. Since the Grand Tour is still happening while this is being written, you’ll have to wait until the next issue to hear about it. Thanks guys.

The car show season has started. Yes, it’s the time of year when it seems as though you can attend a car event every weekend if you like. I’ve been sticking strictly to Porsche events and I still seem to be going to an event every other weekend. For those of you outside of Pierce, Kitsap, and maybe Mason counties, catching car events every weekend might be a challenge. But down here around Tacoma, it’s not a challenge at all. Let’s see, on June 1st, I went to Porsche day at Griot’s Garage Caffeine and Gasoline in Tacoma. Two weeks later on the 15th our club attended a charity car show at the Tacoma Yacht Club. The very next week, Saturday the 22nd, was our leg of the Zone 6 Grand Tour. Our club hosted the portion of the tour that went from Larson’s Porsche in Tacoma up to Port Angeles. I got one weekend off and then I’ll be right back at it on July 6th when we attend the Sovren Historic races and show off our cars in the Corral at Pacific Raceway.

But I said that I could have filled every weekend with car events. Ok, looking back, I took the weekend of June 8th off but I could have attended the Porsche Concours event at Denny Akers’ Workshop in Seattle if I wanted to. My next free weekend would have been 6/29 – 30. Well, there was a Porsche Club Drivers Education event at Oregon Raceway Park that weekend, but that’s a bit of a hike. Hemmings Motor News Great Race ended at America’s Car Museum in Tacoma on 6/30 and there was a car show there. That would have been a cool event to see.

Page 5: OPR PCA Newsletter July Aug 2019...2019/07/08  · 7/9 – 11:30A-12:30P – If Cars Could Talk –Porsche 917 @ 50: One hour presentation on the history and legacy of the 917. at

So there you go. I could have filled 4 weekends out of 5 in June with Porsche events. I only had to look outside of the Porsche world for a car event on one weekend. Honestly, I’ve never thought about Porsches this way until this very moment. How many other cars have this much activity related to them?

Now, I’ll be honest with you. I’m not a real car guy. No, really! I go to these events and folks ask me questions about some model of 911 and I haven’t a clue what they’re talking about. I can hold my own talking about 944’s because I’ve owned one for so long. It helps that nobody gives a crap about 944’s anymore and it makes me seem like a guru or something. If you read my tech articles years ago, you know that I know my tech stuff and I know a little about detailing. But outside of that, I get lost fast. So, sometimes I can feel uncomfortable at these car events.

I wasn’t always a non-car guy. As a teen, I knew cars like nobody’s business. I could tell the difference between every make, model, and year of American car from the late 50’s through the early 70’s from a pretty good distance. Sadly, car designs started getting very uninteresting in the mid 70’s and my interest waned. But regardless of my level of car knowledge, there will always be something about the way certain cars look or the way a V8 engine sounds that gets me excited.

But, it’s not the cars that keep me going to the weekend car events. Honestly, I’ve grown tired of seeing cars that cost more than my house. How many times can you get excited over a fiberglass Shelby Cobra replica? But there are still two cool things about these events. First is getting to see unusual cars. I’m talking about either cars that I’ve never/rarely seen or cars that have something unique about them. On the rare side, you don’t see many prewar cars at shows any more. The folks that own and appreciate them are either gone or too old to get the cars out very often. To be honest, the number of cars from as recently as the 50’s are starting to get fewer and fewer. At the Griot’s event in June I saw a T-bucket roadster that was really, really nice and there was a guy that brought what looked like a 55 Chevy made to look like a Gasser. Both were examples of cars you don’t see very often any more. An example of the unusual side of things includes a 911 Targa at Griot’s that filled many of us with mixed emotions. The car looked like it sat in a junk yard for years before being pulled out and brought back to life just enough to run. The hood (or whatever you call it) over the engine and Targa top were missing. The paint was in worse condition than any paint I’ve ever seen. It was probably Guards Red originally, but it’s closer to some reddish shade of brown now. The interior was dirty, full of junk, and the door cards and carpet were gone. None of us would have touched it without latex gloves, even if you paid us. But we all had to admit that it was different and we all spent time standing there talking about it.

The second thing I like about going to the weekend car events is the people. I’m more a people person than I am a car guy. There are a lot of places where you can go and find folks that are obnoxious or just a pain in the butt. But for some reason, I enjoy being around the people at car events. And sometimes there’s a surprise in it for me. As things were wrapping up at the Griot’s event in June, I asked a friend what he was doing for lunch. He said that he was going to look at motorcycles and asked if I’d like to come along. It turns out that my friend’s plans included more than just looking at Harleys. He ended up buying one! I had a great time and it was handy for my friend to have someone there to help him get his newly purchased bike back home.

I’m rambling a bit. Here’s my point. Just like you, I’ve got stuff that I need to get done on the weekends and Porsche events aren’t at the top of the list. If I wasn’t President and didn’t have to attend most of these events, I probably would have skipped them. But I would have missed out on watching a good friend buy a Harley and lots of other fun times. And as I look back, the world didn’t end because whatever I was going to do on the morning I went to Griot’s got put off until that afternoon or maybe the next day. For me, going to a car event

once in a while is simply a matter of putting myself and my own enjoyment first once in a while. I don’t know if it’s the same for you or not. But whatever it is, we sure would love to see you come out and join us.

I’ll close with a request for support to help run the club. Next year will be my last as president, I would really like to have a vice president who intends to take the role of president and will join me at the Zone6 Presidents Meeting in 2020. I’m looking for that person. If you think you’re interested, let me know.

I hope to see you at one of our next events.

Griot’s Porsche Day & The Tacoma Yacht Club Charity Car ShowJune - 2019Bill Elwell

If you read my President’s Desk article then you already know a little about a few of our events back in June. I’d like to share a few more details about a couple of those events and show you a few pictures. Let’s get started.

If you know about Griot’s garage in Tacoma, then you know about their Caffeine and Gasoline events on the first Saturday of every month. Caffeine and Gasoline is an amped up version of a cars and coffee event. Griot’s provides donuts and coffee and, of course, a big parking lot. Everyone else just brings their cars. The events are supposed to start at 8am when the store opens but the lot is always starting to fill up by 7:30am. Each month there is a theme and the theme for June was Porsche. Caffeine and Gasoline wasn’t an official club event, but you wouldn’t know by looking at how many club members were there. Club members or not, there was a good turn-out of Porsches and non-Porsches as well. It’s always entertaining to walk the parking lot and see what folks brought out of their garage for the day. If you could have walked the parking lot that day, you might have seen some of these cars.

The 944S2 on the left is mine. The Blue Cayenne belongs to Shannon and Chris Wood.

What would a Porsche event be without a GT3? But what about that beautiful blue 911?

Page 8: OPR PCA Newsletter July Aug 2019...2019/07/08  · 7/9 – 11:30A-12:30P – If Cars Could Talk –Porsche 917 @ 50: One hour presentation on the history and legacy of the 917. at

Here is a tiny sampling of the variety of cars you can see at Caffeine and Gasoline.

I couldn’t resist putting a picture or two of this Targa in the article. Look at the right front fender. There was once a rear view mirror mounted there. As bad as this car looks, there’s not much rust.

Hey now, look at that interior!

It’s time to shift gears and talk about the Tacoma Yacht Club charity car show. On June 15th the Tacoma Yacht Club held a charity car and motorcycle show. With the help of Yacht Club member Don Knievel, we not only participated in the car show, we also had lunch and held our monthly meeting there as well. The weather was wonderful and the turn-out was great. I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

To the left, Andrew Isar and Brett Burroughs debate the merits of the latest silicon dioxide detailing product.

Meet the twins, Turbo 911’s belonging to Kip Sparber (on the left) and Andrew Isar (on the right). How often do you see a sight like this?

Always the wise-guy, Kip Sparber points out something that Maryann Elwell and Chris and Shannon Wood think is pretty funny.

Brian Forde brought his new Harley and took the award for best motorcycle.

Our club won the Club Participation Award at the show. That’s me at the bottom center holding the plaque. Thanks to everyone who came out!

Cars and Coffee in Sequim – May 18th

The Sequim Cars and Coffee in May had all the essential elements – a beautiful setting, nice cars, and great people. A handful of PCA OPR members converged on the home of Dan Kalinski on a cool sunny day for a surprisingly well attended event. The actual venue was the rental home adjacent to his house (look it up on VRBO - Dungeness Bay Manor), complete with sprawling green lawns overlooking the scenic Dungeness Spit, perfect for showing off your pride and joy. The house, open for inspection, was a treat that would not be out of place among the seaside mansions in the Hamptons. There were dozens of Porsches among the 100 or so exotics and slightly-less exotics, including one that caught my eye, a Beck replica 550 Spider. The cars present ranged from Ferraris to Ford GTs to a rather unusual Nash-Healey that came complete with the story of its unlikely genesis. The turnout for the monthly event was unusually large and varied. A great spread of food was on offer in one of the workshops and in general it just could not be much better. The photos included here give you a sense of the setting and the robust turnout.

At the conclusion of the event, all were invited to visit the home of Brown McClatchy Maloney, of the McClatchy newspaper family. The McClatchy chain is the nation's second-largest newspaper company, with 32 dailies stretching from Miami to Anchorage. Brown is a long time Sequim resident and has a home surrounded by a half dozen garages, each with a different automotive/motorcycle theme. He has an eclectic mix of vehicles, starting with a white garage containing a white RX-7 Turbo, a white NSX, and a wait-you-guessed-it white Nissan GT-R. Moving on to the higher ground, the next garage contained an eye-popping collection of Ferraris that brought to mind the saying “Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy a whole lot of cool cars and that’s the same thing, right?” Lurking in the corner was a 1960’s era Ferrari 275GTB which, judging by recent auction results is worth approximately One Bazillion Dollars. Porsches did not figure prominently in the collection, but the gull wing door Mercedes 300SL certainly got my attention. The workmanship and detail in the restorations of these cars was amazing, with everything down to the stitching of the matching luggage done to perfection. Another garage was curiously empty, save for the numerous plaques lined up along the floor. It turns out that his extensive collection of Honda motorcycles is on loan to the LeMay museum in Tacoma, taking up almost an entire hallway there. Several more garages held a slightly less exotic collection of Ford Thunderbirds and other such Americana. Everyone really enjoyed the visit and praised Brown for opening his collection to an appreciating audience. As I drove back home, I felt like I had experienced an entire year’s worth of automobilia, all in one short day.
