THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is accountable for the overall management of CKUA and provides strategic leadership by working with the Board of Directors and the Senior Management team to establish and implement successful business and fundraising strategies, operational plans and policies. The Executive Director supports the governance Board to fulfil their oversight and fiduciary responsibilities.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning

• Contributes to the development of a vision, mission, and values for CKUA, working in cooperation with theBoard of Directors.

• Reviews and updates the Strategic Plan at appropriate intervals to retain its relevance and leads thedevelopment of a new Strategic Plan for Board review and approval, when required.

• Develops Operational plans with relevant metrics that support the direction of the organization in the areasof fund development, programming, communications, stakeholder relations, and marketing.

• Communicates in a timely manner with the Board on the progress, barriers, and required deviations from the strategic plans and operational initiatives.

• Remains abreast of trends and changes within the industry to allow insight and knowledge of the environment and challenges to inform the strategic plan and operational initiatives.

Leadership and Operational Management

• Provides leadership to staff (including five direct reports), contractors, and volunteers to advance CKUA’s vision, mission, and core values, as well as to the strategic and operational execution of the organization’s mandate. Manages an overall budget of $5-6 million.

• Provides general supervision and management of the day-to-day affairs of CKUA within the guidelines established by the Board, consistent with decisions requiring prior approval of the Board, and the Board's expectations of the Executive Director.

• Monitors key metrics and performance indicators to enable proactive management of risk, deliverables, and execution of the strategic and operational plans.

• Develops a high performing organization with the right people in the right positions.

• Ensures recruitment, orientation and training for new staff and contractors.

• Manages the evolution of an effective organizational structure with clear delineation of position responsibilities, authorities, and accountabilities, and provides mentoring to management and staff.

• Motivates and leads an effective Senior Leadership Team; implements an effective plan of succession and development for the Executive Director and Management.

• Together with the Senior Leadership Team, ensures “people strategies” and compensation systems are appropriate to mobilize the energies and talents of staff to execute the Strategic Plan and operational initiatives, and to support effective succession.

• Sets clear, result-orientated goals with realistic and measurable outcomes, and supports goal achievement.

• Coaches and monitors performance and provides regular, appropriate and constructive feedback.

• Encourages formal and informal professional development.

• Develops and oversees policies and procedures for volunteer management including volunteer recruitment, and orientation and training materials.

• Identifies potential opportunities for partnerships in the community to recruit volunteers.

• Due to size of the organization, the Executive Director will be required to be hands on when necessary.

Governance and Risk Management

• Supports the governance Board to fulfil their oversight and fiduciary responsibilities.

• Communicates regularly and in a timely fashion to the Chair of the Board and Board of Directors. This includes communicating material matters affecting the organization, to ensure the Board is kept informed of business operations, business issues and major risks facing the organization.

• Ensures all operations and activities of the organization are conducted in accordance with the values and intent of enabling laws, regulations, plans, policies, and sound business practices.

• Ensures that appropriate internal controls are in place (e.g. technology, processes, policies, procedures) to safeguard and optimize assets.

• Protects CKUA’s charitable status.

Financial Management

• Ensures accurate and timely reporting to the Board and Finance and Audit Committee on all finance related issues such as budget, actuals, cash flow management, financial statements, and risks.

• Prepares three year operating and capital budgets for Board approval that align with a not-for-profit mandate.

• Delivers annual revenue targets including all fund-raising requirements.

• Ensures the accuracy, integrity and appropriate disclosures for annual financial statements and works with the auditors as required.

• Creates or updates organizational financial policies and procedures as required.

Fund Development

• Serves as the “Chief Advocate” for CKUA.

• Develops and implements a Fund Development Plan, for Board approval, to address short- and long-term funding strategies for the sustainability of the organization.

• Executes the Fund Development Plan regarding funding strategies, networking and partnership building opportunities.

• Identifies, seeks, and develops strategic fundraising for major donations, corporate and or government sponsorships.

• Identifies, seeks, and develops new funding and partnership prospects.

Communications and Stakeholder Relations

• Serves as the “Chief Spokesperson” for CKUA.

• Develops and implements a Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Plan, with Board approval.

• Represents the organization and its values with all stakeholders including listeners, governments, regulatory bodies, other stakeholders, and the general public.

• Protects, advocates for, and continues to strengthen the CKUA brand provincially and nationally.

• Promotes awareness of CKUA’s vision and mission.

• Demonstrates conduct appropriate to the occasion, in order to represent CKUA on a formal or informal basis.

• Builds strong working relationships, both internally and external to the organization, for support in achieving the organization’s goals.

• Acts as the prime interface between CKUA and government, regulators, and licensing bodies.

• Builds positive working relationships with regulators and licensing bodies to ensure alignment and mitigation of regulatory risks.

• Has an appreciation of CKUA and its place within Alberta and the Canadian media landscape, past and present, in order to protect and strengthen the brand.

KEY PRIORITIES

• Ensure solid financial stability for CKUA by increasing reviews (grants, new donors, etc.).

• Review and rebuild the leadership team, if and as required.

• Review and update CKUA’s Strategic Plan.

THE PERSON

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• A minimum Bachelor’s degree in Business or in a related field.

• Demonstrated experience reporting to a governance Board of Directors. Proven experience in developing and implementing a strategic plan.

• Experience with the arts and culture sector or within a regulated industry would be an asset.

• Proven track record of success in a senior leadership management role, overseeing a multi-faceted organization, through significant changes or challenges.

• Understanding of and experience with digital media trends and technology developments would be an asset.

• Proven experience of recruiting, motivating and successfully managing a team.

• Experience with a union environment, collective agreements, and bargaining would be an asset.
