Justice: Faith in action is demonstrated through helping to bring justice to an often callous and unjust world. THE EASTERN UNIVERSITY STORYA Long Tradition of Service to the Church and SocietyEastern University is a private, co-educational, comprehensive Christian University in the evangelical Protestant tradition, which values its ties with other Christian traditions. Eastern University was founded in 1932 as a colle-giate division of Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, which began in Philadelphia, PA in 1925. After almost 20 years of growth and progress, the Board of Trustees voted on April 17, 1951, to organize Eastern Baptist College as a separate institution and relocated it to the former Charles S. Walton estate in St. Davids, PA. Early in 1972, the legal name of the school was changed to Eastern College: a Baptist Institution. The purpose of this change was to increase its appeal to all evangelical Christians. The first Eastern College graduate program (MBA) was approved in 1981, followed by the MS (1986), MEd (1991), MA (2003), PhD (2006), and DA (2010) degrees. These graduate programs were brought under one administration, along with nontraditional undergraduate programs, with the creation of the Campolo College of Graduate and Professional Studies in 2004. A branch campus, Esperanza College, was established in Philadelphia in 2000. This college serves Hispanic students by offering an AA degree that features a Spanish-to- English language transition track. The

Templeton Honors College was added in the same year and was designed to challenge and prepare academically gifted undergraduate students for leadership and service in culture, society and their professions. Because of its growing complexity and expansion into international venues, Eastern College was granted University status in December, 2001. In 2003, the University was reunited with its mother institution, Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Honoring the legacy of its longest-serving President, Gordon Palmer, Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary was renamed Palmer Theological Seminary on July 1, 2005. Today, Eastern University’s colleges offer 35 undergraduate majors, 15 master’s degrees, 3 doctoral degrees, an AA program with seven different concentrations, and a Seminary-based certificate program. The University enrolls approximately 4,300 full- and part-time students in these un-dergraduate, graduate, urban, professional, international and Seminary programs. Eastern University athletes compete in the NCAA Division III (Middle Atlantic Conference) and have been recognized in recent years with numerous individual and team honors, including All-American, conference champi-onship and NCAA tournament appearances.Eastern University was named a College of Distinction for 2014 and a Military Friendly School for 2014. PHILADELPHIA: A CITY OF NEIGHBORHOODSEastern University is located on the Main Line of Philadelphia. St. Davids is a suburban community just west of Philadelphia, PA, which is the fifth largest city in the United States and the second largest city on the East Coast. Eastern is one of nearly 80 colleges and universities in the region, so it’s no wonder the metropolitan Philadelphia area has attracted so many industries. Of course, Philadelphia is best known as the birthplace of American independence and the home of America’s most cherished colonial sites, including the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross House and Independence Hall. The National Constitution Center is America’s most hands-on history museum and is located just two blocks from the Liberty Bell.  Philadelphia, just a 25-minute train ride from the St. Davids campus, combines the excitement of a big city with the appeal of diverse neighborhoods and suburbs. Visitors head for South Philly and its famous cheesesteaks, the elegant shops on Chestnut Street, and a chance to run up the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps just like Rocky in the iconic movie about the Philadelphia boxer. Culture abounds in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes and Rodin Museums top the list of nearly 200 such institutions. Music lovers enjoy the acclaimed Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel Center or its open-air summer home at the Mann Center in Fairmount Park. They also enjoy the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Opera Company of Philadelphia. There is a lively theater and restaurant scene both in Center City and throughout the Philadelphia region. The long list of “what is there to do?” is always full in the Philadelphia area. From academic programs and events to culture and sports (Philadelphia fans are passion-ate about the Eagles, Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers), there are always plenty of choices.

Vision and Mission As the inaugural dean of this new school, she/he will have the unique opportunity to work in concert with the University’s senior leadership and in collaboration with the college’s constituencies to develop an expansive vision and articulate its accompanying mission for the new college consistent with the university’s vision and mission. Eastern’s reputation as a world class leader among Christian universities for its dedication to faith, reason, and justice offers the new college an exciting opportu-nity to shape a curriculum and faculty that reflect a commitment to the whole gospel for the whole world through developing students, including students from under-served populations, as whole persons for leadership in their vocations.

Culture Setting A part of the opportunity in establishing a new college is to shape the culture of the new

unit. Consistent with Eastern’s foundational commitment to Christian community, the university seeks a dean who will work with the faculty, staff, and students being brought together and united in this new college to create a culture of collaboration, teamwork, and consensus. The new college will be broadly based and will need a dean who can relate to and create partnerships with and among the many constituencies such as external constituents (employers, prospec-tive students, etc.) who help determine the programs and curricula the college needs to offer; faculty who design and develop the curricula; students who experience the cur-ricula, become alumni, and join the external workforce to pursue their vocations; accredi-tors who monitor assessment of the curricula and programs; community leaders, corpora-tions, foundations and friends who provide support for the college.

Academic and Faculty Leadership The university seeks a dean who will be a recognized intellectual and organizational leader. The dean should have the credentials and experience to garner the respect of the faculty and broader academic community as an intellectual who can speak authoritatively about curriculum, research, pedagogy, vari-ous instructional modalities, and assessment. The university seeks a dean with a proven track record of organizational leadership who will bring unity and cohesion to the many different elements being brought together in the new college, who will bring creative pro-gramming ideas with the capacity and energy for implementing them successfully, who will have a proven relational track record to win the collaboration and support of the various constituencies that will be required for successful implementation. To provide this leadership will require visionary planning, outstanding faculty, an expanded and evolving curriculum, significant partnering with the business and workforce community, extensive fundraising and judicious allocation of resources. The new dean should have a record of building a quality leadership team to assist with administering the college, a record of leading faculty and staff in continuous improvement of their professional development, and a record of high integrity and maintaining sterling quality consistent with the institu-tion’s thoroughly Christian character.

THE AGENDA FOR THE NEW DEAN Under the energetic leadership of President Robert G. Duffett and with the broad input of the Eastern community, the University se-lected R. Keith Iddings as their new Provost in 2014 to guide visionary expansion of the Eastern academic enterprise. The realign-ment of departments and programs into a new College of Business and Leadership is one of the bold new moves being taken to strengthen and advance the University’s of-ferings in the crucial areas represented in the new college. The new dean will have the ex-ceptional opportunity to shape many aspects of the new college, giving it vision, a culture, a structure, and a team of professionals all working in concert to create a highly suc-cessful educational experience for the broad range of students – traditional and adult, undergraduate and graduate, campus-based and globally scattered – who will be recruited to benefit from the college’s outstanding pro-grams, curricula, and faculty.

should have excellent knowledge of the free enterprise world of business and industry and the importance of innovation and creativity. She/he should also be well informed about legislative and regulatory issues as well as the fast paced changes in our society that im-pact the commercial marketplace. The dean should have sufficient experience and creden-tials to be recognized as a leader in the field of business and organizations. The university has a long history of com-munity service and enjoys good community support. The formation of this new college provides a platform for the dean to lead in an effort to greatly expand partnerships with business, industry, government, healthcare, nonprofits, the church and the total commu-nity. Service learning, internships, on-site educational partnerships, and various other programmatic efforts will require that the dean builds strong personal relationships with significant business, community and political leaders at all levels in order to develop the support needed for the college and its programs.

The Student Experience The university envisions the new college will have tremendous diversity in its student population so that the dean will be responsible for leading a widespread but comprehensive student development program to meet the needs of the entire range of students. With an existing diverse student body, a variety of delivery modalities, and expanding curriculum and programs delivered on campus, online, at multiple locations locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, the demographics of the student population will also grow more divergent and varied in age, degree level pursued, subject matters studied, back-ground preparation, financial ability to pay, and in race, ethnicity, national/geographic origin. The dean will have responsibility for ensuring an outstanding educational experi-ence for all students, and that will require an exceptional level of creative leadership along with a coordinated team of well prepared and highly motivated faculty and staff who have adequate resources and support.

Resource Development and Allocation The basic budgetary support for the new college will come along with the programs and services that are being brought together to form the college. The anticipated growth and development of the new college expressed in this Agenda will be heavily dependent on the dean’s ability to provide the fundraising and friend-raising leadership that will bring in the human, capital, and financial resources required for success. The university seeks a dean with experience in fundraising and an aptitude for building relationships with business and community leaders. Along with obtaining additional resources, the new dean will also have responsibility for assessing needs and allocating resources appropriately to ensure the college is fulfilling its mission. The dean is responsible for the development of all college budget requests, authorization of budget allocations and expenditures, and general oversight of the college’s operating budget.

Community Engagement The university seeks a dean who not only nurtures the college’s internal constituencies, but is also externally focused. The dean
