15th Annual Dr. Mow Shiah Lin Scholarship

for students of Asian heritage established by the

Asian Pacific American Association at Brookhaven National Laboratory

BERA’s Asian Pacific American Association (APAA) has established the Dr. Mow Shiah Lin Scholarship, honoring the late Dr. Lin who was a distinguished scientist at the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s BNL Energy Sciences and Technology Department. In honor of Dr. Lin’s research, remarkable achievements, and inventions, a one-time award of $1,500 will be granted this year to a student of Asian heritage with a U.S. student visa matriculating toward a doctorate at an accredited institution of higher education on Long Island (including Queens and Brooklyn) in Environmental & Energy Technology, Biology, or Chemistry. The first Dr. Lin Scholarship was presented in September 2005. Each year, a winner will be chosen by a selection committee consisting of scientists at BNL and members of the APAA. The criteria for selection include academic records, references, career goals, and other factors deemed appropriate by the Committee. The scholarship will be granted independent of financial need and without regard to other forms of aid to the student. Dr. Lin began his career at Brookhaven in 1975 as a postdoctoral fellow in the Chemistry Department. Over the years, he advanced to Senior Scientist and, ultimately, to Principal Investigator of a BNL team working with a Californian environmental remediation company to use selected bacteria to convert toxic oil wastes, such as oil spills and used motor oil, into useful products. Dr. Lin owned 9 patents, published 85 papers, and won many national awards, including the 2001 R&D 100 award. In 2003, he was posthumously nominated for the Lemelson, MIT life-time award. His career ended abruptly due to a brain aneurysm in September 2003 while on a flight to China where he was invited to present his research at the National Petroleum Research Institute. Dr. Lin is survived by his wife and three daughters. With this scholarship, the Lin family hopes to make a difference for students who come to the United States, like Dr. Lin, to pursue a higher education and achieve their research goals with the purpose of making significant contributions to the environment and improving the lives for all humankind. Administered by the BNL Diversity Office, the APAA is now accepting applications for the next Dr. Mow Shiah Lin Scholarship through June 7, 2019. School transcripts from the previous two semesters, two professional letters of reference, and an essay, which summarizes the objectives of the applicant’s education program and long-range research goals must be attached to the application. Additional information such as a CV, a publications list, or involvement in civic/volunteer activities and personal interests is encouraged. The essay should be concise, limited to 1 – 2 pages, and double-spaced. For more information or to obtain copies of the application form, please contact the BNL Diversity Office via phone (631-344-6253) or email ([email protected]), or visit the APAA web site at http://www.bnl.gov/bera/activities/apaa/.
