What Does That Mean?

Student organizations offer extracurricular academic, political, cultural, recreational, spiritual, service and social opportunities for college students.

An internship is a learning opportunity providing a student with a short, real world experience in their field of study.

Study abroad is a student’s completion of a part of their major outside the U.S.

Rush is a student organization’s campus campaign to recruit new members.

The Greek System refers to a college tradition of groups of men and women who join together to form a fraternity (men) or sorority (women) to offer social and academic support and activities.

Lower division coursework refers to courses taken in the first two years of a four-year undergraduate program as preparation for a major.

Upper division coursework refers to classes completed during the last two years of a four-year degree program.

What are Student Organizations? All colleges have student organizations and clubs. Small colleges may have just a few. Large colleges, where there are thousands of undergraduates with many educational goals and interests, can have hundreds of student organizations. Student organizations offer unlimited opportunities for college students to explore and enjoy a variety of activities, meet interesting people, and pursue career experience.

Each year, campus student organizations hold rush. Rush is a club or organization’s campus campaign to recruit new members through fun events and activities. Student organizations are student-run and generally fit into these categories: academic, political, recreational, cultural, spiritual, service and social. Let’s explore student organizations:

AcademicAcademic organizations attract students interested in activities related to their major or career preparation. They engage in academic competitions, form honor societies, interest groups, and pre-professional groups. If you think that sounds boring, think again! One west coast college has a student organization for music majors which hosts large concerts on campus, and connects students with music industry professionals. Another pre-professional club designs and builds an open-wheeled formula-style race car every year.

Political Some students arrive at college with a well-developed interest in politics or the political process. Others gain an interest in politics in college as a result of exposure to new ideas and experiences. In any event, all campuses have student political organizations which provide a variety of opportunities for students to indulge their inner-politician, or engage in activities for promoting political or social causes locally, nationally or internationally. Examples of campus political organizations are Amnesty International, Young Democrats, College Republicans, Model United Nations, Green Party, student government, Students for a Free Tibet, Humans Against Meat, and Rock the Vote.

Some student organizations host campus rock concerts

RecreationalWhenever college students have free time, they like to have fun. Recreational clubs include intramural sports clubs and teams where students play a sport for fun, exercise and (mostly) friendly competition. Colleges have long lists of intramural sports: soccer, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, swimming, water polo, ultimate frisbee – even paintball and Quidditch – are just a few of the intramural sports offered at some colleges.

Intramural sports are organized by skill level: An upper level, sometimes referred to as the Club or League level, is for students who have played the sport competitively. Club and League levels play games and tournaments against other college or university intramural teams. An intermediate level is for students who have played the game before, know the rules and strategies, but do not desire the level of play or commitment required of the Club level. The recreational level is for students who want to participate in a sport for fun and exercise. To learn more about intramural sports: go to National Intramural Recreational Sports Association at www.NIRSA.org

Many colleges have outdoor adventure clubs for activities like camping, climbing, hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. Other recreational activities typically include Cinema Club for movie and popcorn nights, dance clubs, craft clubs, glee clubs, comedy clubs... You name it — you’ll find it on a college campus.

Cultural College campuses are rich in cultural diversity. Many culture clubs are typically found on a college campus. Some popular culture clubs are the Chicano/Latino Student Association, Native American Student Organization, African-American, Asian-Pacific, and Middle-Eastern Student Organization. Culture clubs provide academic workshops, community service, social and academic support for students of a particular culture, but welcome all students, regardless of race or ethnicity. So, for students who need a touch of their home culture, or for students interested in learning more about a culture, or trying an exotic food or folk dance, a culture club is the place.

SpiritualBaptist, Jewish, Catholic, Buddhist, Muslim… Many religious faiths are often represented on a college campus. Faith organizations enable college students to continue practicing their religion while at college. Faith organizations are devoted to the spiritual support of students and provide a place for students to worship, socialize and celebrate their religious customs and holidays with other students of their faith.

Recreational clubs are about fun and adventure

ServiceService organizations provide opportunities for college students to get involved in volunteer work locally, or around the world. Through a campus service organization, students can work with local youth groups coaching sports, tutoring, teaching a skill or sharing a talent. They help at shelters, hospitals, and retirement centers. There’s even a service organization that trains dogs to be therapy companions for the elderly. Some college service organizations are chapters of larger nationwide organizations that volunteer to help on international projects, like building homes in Guatemala, or installing water purification systems in Africa.

SocialAre you a poet? Gamer? Fashionista? Metalhead? There is a college social club for just about any interest or hobby. In a social club, you can meet other students with similar interests and enjoy activities, like concerts and tournaments.

A popular college social tradition is called The Greek System. Groups of men and women join to form a fraternity (men) or sorority (women) to offer fellowship, academic support, campus activities, and community service. Members are referred to as Greeks, because fraternities and sororities are named for a combination of letters of the Greek alphabet such as Alpha Chi Omega () or Delta Kappa Epsilon ().

Some fraternities and sororities have affiliations such as Alpha Phi Alpha () which is the oldest historically Black fraternity in the nation, or Gamma Alpha Omega () a Latina-founded, multicultural sorority. Fraternities and sororities have houses on campus where members live.

Greek rush is in the fall, and includes lots of fun social events to recruit new members. Joining (pledging) a fraternity or sorority is an excellent way to meet people, make life-long friends, and have loads of fun in college.

With a college service organization, you can volunteer locally or around the world!

There is a social club for just about any interest or hobby.

What is an Internship? An internship is an opportunity for a college student to work for a business or a government agency to gain practical, real world experience in their field or major. The student works temporarily at a company or agency, learning the day-to-day operations. An internship can help a student decide if he or she truly has an interest in a particular career. An internship can be paid or unpaid. It can take place during the school year, or over the summer. There are thousands of internships in every field of study. Some internships are famous for being highly prized and very competitive. For example, every year college students from around the country compete to intern with Vogue Magazine, Google, Apple, Pixar, ESPN, Disney, Nike, The White House, Congress, C.I.A., NIH (National Health Institute), and NASA. There are also internships with professional sports teams. Campus internship offices are staffed by experts who help students research, locate and apply for internships.

ROTC stands for Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. The ROTC is like a college internship with a branch of the military. Students who join the Air Force or Army ROTC are called cadets. Students who join the Navy or Marine Corp ROTC are called midshipmen. The Coast Guard program is called the College Student Pre-commissioning Initiative (CSPI). ROTC students continue normal activities and studies at college, but also learn military management skills by attending some special classes. After graduation, ROTC cadets and midshipmen enter the military.

What is Study Abroad? Study Abroad programs enable college students to complete part of their upper division (major studies) course work overseas. Most colleges offer study abroad opportunities to students in their junior year. Study abroad programs are also referred to as International Education Programs (IEP) or Education Abroad Programs (EAP) study abroad programs are located all over the world and are popular with college students. A college or university may have a small campus in another country, or an agreement with an overseas college to permit students to enroll there. There is even an opportunity for students to study at sea, traveling around the world by ship!

A study abroad term can be for a semester, academic year or summer. The student often travels with a group of students, and sometimes with a professor. While overseas, students live in a residence hall, or with a local family called a host family. Students attend class, sightsee, learn to speak a bit of the language, and experience a life in a different culture.
