Opportunities for a Lifetime

Executive SummaryWhen a parent finds out their child has autism, their vision for the future immediately changes. Countless questions come to mind:

We know a parent’s dream for their child — with or without autism — includes being happy, healthy and leading a full life that includes meaningful employment, financial security, and independent living. These are Sherwood’s dreams as well. Together we work with families to help answer their questions and keep their dreams alive.

Everyone’s journey looks different, but at Sherwood each individual is provided the same opportunities, support, and guidance to achieve success in school, move into adulthood, find employment, and contribute to society. Sherwood Autism Center is there for the journey; providing Opportunities for a Lifetime.

Sherwood Autism Center was founded in 1974 in a church basement with six children who had nowhere else to go. It was the first organization in Kansas City to provide education and other services for children with autism. Children, however, do not “outgrow” autism. As the original Sherwood children grew up, services were expanded. Today, of the original six children, one is still at Sherwood. Sherwood now serves more than 150 children and adults on two campuses.

“Where can I get help for my child and our family? What resources will I need? What does school look like?

How can I prepare my child for adulthood?"

Sherwood has grown because the need has grown. In the ‘60s and ‘70s autism was rarely diagnosed. By 2000 one in 150 children were diagnosed with autism. Fourteen years later the Centers for Disease Control announced that the number of children diagnosed with autism had more than doubled. In 2014 one in 59 children were identified with autism. Not only does this increase affect school-age programs like Sherwood’s, but because autism is not curable, they often need services for life.

Sherwood Autism Center provides two tiers of services on two campuses:

• A school age program that provides education and behavior services for students, ages 5-21, who have not found success in the traditional public school setting. The school is located in a well-kept school building at 8030 Ward Parkway Plaza in a settled and stable neighborhood.

• An adult program that provides support and training to help individuals transition to a meaningful adulthood including appropriate employment. The facility is located at 7938 Chestnut Avenue, near 79th and Prospect, in a run-down school building at the end of a cul-de-sac littered with trash.

Although the need for school age services continues to increase, the need for services for adults is dire. The Department of Mental Health estimates there are between 600-800 adults who qualify for the type of services Sherwood provides. However, parents or caregivers are reluctant to send their adult child to a program housed in a building where buckets line the halls when it rains and located in a neighborhood where vehicles are vandalized and outside security cameras are often stolen.

Since April 2017, 43% of adults eligible and interested inSherwood’s adult program chose to go elsewhere because of concerns

about the location at 79th and Prospect in Kansas City, MO.

To continue these vital services for a growing adult population, Sherwood Autism Center proposes to move our current adult program into new expanded facilities at our Ward Parkway Plaza location. Our $3.5 million Opportunities for a Lifetime capital campaign will not only provide new, state-of-the art facilities for adult services but will also update and expand facilities for our school age population.

This campaign will ensure that Sherwood is able to continue providing Opportunities for a Lifetime for individuals with autism, from 5 to 105.

Opportunities for a Lifetime will provide:

• An up-to-date facility that will allow every single person we serve to feel proud of where they go each day and parents and caregivers to feel confident about the safety of their loved one.

• One facility that will provide a seamless transition from student to adult services.• Updated classrooms and therapy rooms for students.• A state of the art training kitchen and laundry facility to provide pre-vocational training and

independent-living skills for adults. • A community area for adult recreational and social opportunities as well as space to use computers.• Updated HVAC system to provide optimum heating and cooling for both children and adults.• New windows and roof repairs to ensure comfort and energy efficiency.

Because of this campaign, Sherwood will be able to provide the services that will help our participants reach their potential, providing opportunities that many individuals and their families never thought possible.

Currently, state and federal funding covers our basic operating expenses. But these funds do not allow for capital improvements or expenditures. We are reluctant to invest additional time and energy into our adult facility because we know it will never meet our needs. We are reaching out to the community to help us improve the quality of our programming, increase the number of participants we serve, and continue to ensure that individuals and families living with autism have the Opportunities for a Lifetime they need and deserve.

“Sherwood saved my grandson and myself. I no longer feel alone. I don’t know what we would have done or what our lives would have been like without them.”

– Jerry, Sherwood Autism Center Parent

About AutismAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability often characterized by challenges with speech and nonverbal communication, repetitive behaviors, and social skill difficulties. Research indicates that ASD is caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. ASD can be diagnosed as early as 18 months and is typically diagnosed by age 3 although in some cases it is diagnosed much later.

Early indicators that a child might be on the autism spectrum include:• No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter• No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions by nine months • No babbling by 12 months • No back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching, or waving by 12 months • No words by 16 months • No meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) by 24 months • Any loss of speech, babbling, or social skills at any age

ASD lasts throughout a person’s life, although symptoms may improve over time with the appropriate treatment. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives, others need less. Individuals served at Sherwood Autism Center are generally moderately to severely impacted by ASD and will need services for much of their lives.

Identified Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Number of boys: 1 in 37 Number of girls: 1 in 151(occurs 4 times greater in boys than girls)

2000: 1 in 150

2006: 1 in 110

2010: 1 in 68

2014: 1 in 59

Prevalence of Autism from 2000-2014 Autism is treatable but not curable. Early diagnosis and intervention is the key.

HistoryIn 1974, Debbie Wood was a UMKC psychology student, working with a boy with autism in an Olathe psychiatric hospital. Debbie and another student took turns working with him, day and night, for eight months. The hospital was getting ready to discharge him, yet there were no schools for him to attend. They were going to send him home without services. Debbie said — “No way! There has to be something better.”

At that time, Sherwood became the only agency to provide specialized education and support services for children with autism in the Kansas City area. Today, Sherwood Autism Center provides high-quality services for both children and adults with autism spectrum disorder and a wide range of developmental disabilities. It is the only not-for-profit organization that provides both day habilitation services and pre-vocational and vocational services for adults with autism and other developmental disabilities.

The “there has to be something better” philosophy still drives us today. We constantly seek to find the most effective methods and resources available for the individuals and families we serve.

Mission, Vision, ValuesSherwood Autism Center exists to empower children and adults with autism and related disabilities to maximize their potential in family and community life. Our vision is to create the optimum environment for adults and students to reach their potential at the highest level. We believe that every person has the right to be treated as a unique individual, develop to his or her fullest potential, receive caring and respectful treatment, personal dignity, and have the opportunity to be a contributing member of society.

Programs and ServicesSherwood typically serves more than 150 adults and children each year.

Special Education Services

Sherwood contracts with school districts in Missouri and Kansas to provide educational and behavior services for students, ages 5 to 21. Students at Sherwood typically need support with social skills, communication, and academics. Many of the students also have extreme behavioral challenges; 40% are non-verbal. In many respects, this is their last option before a residential facility or hospital. Services are provided to all public school families at no charge. We currently have 75+ students enrolled in the program.

Sherwood’s Adult Programs include year-round Day Habilitation Training (Day Services) and Employment and Community Options (ECO) Services. 74% are in the Day Habilitation program and 26% are in the ECO program.

Day Services help adults develop independence and improve the quality of their lives. The ECO program offers job readiness services including job placement, job training, and short or long-term supports to help participants find and keep employment.

Sherwood’s school program focuses on individual goals as well as providing comprehensive scope and sequence to assist students in meeting their potential — from basic communication and classroom readiness skills to an academic or pre-vocational focus. Employment assessments are done beginning at age 16. After graduation some of our students can leave school services and move into community college or employment; the majority of our population cannot.

Adult Services

Adults are referred to Sherwood by the Department of Mental Health and are funded by the Medicaid Waiver. We currently serve 45 individuals through our adult services; all 45 receive Medicaid benefits. As our participants get older, it becomes increasingly difficult for their aging parents to take care of them in the home; consequently 84% live in group homes or some type of supported living facility. 43% are minority and 57% are non-minority. Because of the Medicaid waiver, all participants receive services at no charge.

COMMUNITY NEEDKansas City does not have enough autism service providers to meet the needs of the community.

Sherwood is the only not-for-profit organization in the Kansas City area that provides the breadth of services for students and adults that includes special education, day habilitation training, pre-vocational and employment services — all at no cost to families. But we are limited in the number of individuals we can accept and the services we can offer because of our space.

Over the past two years demand for school age services has grown by 20%. We often have a waiting list when school districts need places for students but we do not have a classroom available. Opportunities for a Lifetime will help us meet this demand by providing resources to open another classroom, renovate existing classrooms, and provide essential services such as permanent therapy rooms and updated HVAC systems.

Despite the number of families that will not choose Sherwood for adult services because of the location, we have grown 49% in the past two years. Reasons for growth include additional program options and activities, effective program structure to track outcomes, and new experienced leadership. Opportunities for a Lifetime will give us the resources to provide more quality services and specialized facilities such as a fully equipped commercial training kitchen and laundry room for this growing population.

Currently, we are partnering with a number of Kansas City organizations including Wayside Waifs, Catholic Charities, and Harvesters to give our adults opportunities to practice their pre-vocational skillsets in the community. We also are forging relationships with Kansas City employers to create paths of employment for our adults once they have completed the job readiness skills in our pre-vocational program. Opportunities for a Lifetime will give us the tools to help adults with autism succeed in the workplace.

Even more importantly, a new facility will give families the confidence to choose Sherwood for their adult family members. Since April of 2017, 43% of families who considered our adult services chose not to enroll due to the location. Instead, they opted to wait for services to become available with other agencies that have a waitlist. This is detrimental to individuals with autism and related disabilities as it prevents them from maintaining existing skills and gaining new ones. Our individuals are already functioning with a gap between their chronological and developmental age. Any interruption of services reduces their opportunity to continue to acquire new skills in order to reach their maximum potential.

“Because of the amazing dedication, compassion, and understanding everyone showed my son he grew into his potential and blossomed. He is ready to move onto the next leg of his journey.”

PROJECT DESCRIPTIONTo meet the growing demand for services for students and adults, Sherwood will renovate and expand our Ward Parkway Plaza campus. This expansion will provide additional space for our special education program and create an optimal adult environment for teaching activities of daily living, pre-vocational, and employment skills — all on one campus.

Currently our school program and adult services are located in separate facilities. The special education program is in a central location, nestled within a supportive and well-maintained community. However, 4,000 square feet of this facility is unusable. It requires new electrical, plumbing, HVAC, ceilings and windows, as well as internal changes to the layout of the rooms. Most of the other classrooms need updating and we need permanent therapy rooms.

Our adult program is, sadly, in a neighborhood at 79th and Prospect that continues to face mounting challenges since we purchased the building in 1980. Although there is room to grow at that location, it would not be prudent to renovate and expand there. In addition to the challenges of location, the facility was built in 1954, making the building more than 60 years old. It requires a significant amount of work including new central heat and air, foundation work to prevent flooding, a new roof, parking lot, fence, and electrical system.

Opportunities for a Lifetime will completely renovate the unused 4,000 square feet at the Ward Parkway Plaza location and add an additional 10,000 square feet of new construction. Our total useable space at the Ward Parkway Plaza location will increase 70% to 34,000 square feet.

Project goals and benefits:

• Update and expand the Special Education school environment to optimize learning and serve more students. The renovated school building will add space, permanent speech and other therapy rooms, updated classrooms, and ensure more consistent heating, cooling and energy efficiency throughout the building.

• Move the Adult Program to a new, attached building at the Ward Parkway Plaza location with expanded facilities and opportunities for learning.

• Increase an individual’s successful transition from one program to the next because they are in the same location.

• Alleviate concerns about the current building and neighborhood at 79th and Prospect.

Having both programs in the same location not only reduces the individual’s anxiety around the transition, it also provides comfort for the parent/guardian knowing that their child will continue at Sherwood, the only consistently successful service they have known.

Classroom Renovations and ExpansionOf the 9 classrooms that will be renovated one is not currently in use. This project will provide space for ten additional students. The classroom renovations will remove existing carpet that is dark, old and torn. Seams are taped down to prevent falls. Odors caused by student incontinence or accidents are trapped in the fibers and are impossible to completely remove. Carpet cannot be disinfected. A new vinyl floor will be safer, easier to sanitize, and will lighten the rooms.

Classroom EnvironmentsClassrooms will provide both individual and small group work areas, “safe” spaces, sensory equipment, and student-centered furniture. This will allow teaching staff to ensure that our programming reflects best practices in the field.

Supported Employment LobbyThe new facility will increase opportunities for vocational training including finding, applying for, and keeping a job. In the Supported Employment Lobby adults will check in, use computers, and prepare to leave for work or volunteer assignments.

More Opportunities for Vocational TrainingThe new facility will increase opportunities for vocational training. This critically important service teaches adults about finding and keeping a job plus it provides the assistance needed for them to be successful. Employment services are customized to meet the goals and service needs of the individuals. Each job site and position is developed with the individual in mind after gaining an understanding of the person’s individual employment goals, strengths, and interests.

Please consider a gift to the Opportunities for a Lifetime capital campaign. Contact Sarah Guthrie, Chief Development Officer, ([email protected]) or Laci Maltbie, Chief Executive Officer ([email protected]), to find out how you can ensure that individuals with autism will have Opportunities for a Lifetime.

Make a Difference for Those Living with Autism

Sherwood Autism Center was founded to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with autism and their families. We know that living with an individual who has autism or other disabilities can be tough.

“ I have, at times, felt like a prisoner in my home. Not able to go to the grocery store or a restaurant without worrying about my child. The last time we were in the community, he ran into the parking lot completely unaware of what was happening around him.”

– Belinda, Sherwood Autism Center Parent

Families often struggle with the daily tasks of work, caring for children, and figuring out how to keep their child or adult with autism safe in a world that does not understand their behavior.

“ It is difficult for people to understand why my child acts the way he does, or why he reacts to certain situations the way he does. There was a time, when my child was severely injured and hospital staff wouldn’t listen to our suggestions to help calm him down so he couldn’t be treated.”

– Mark, Sherwood Autism Center Parent

That’s where Sherwood helps.“ My son didn’t speak until he was five years old. Now that he can communicate his wants and needs, our family life has improved. I can’t wait to see what he will learn next.”

– Sheryl, Sherwood Autism Center Parent

Completing the $3.5 million Opportunities for a Lifetime capital campaign will ensure that we have the facilities to continue providing excellent services for individuals with autism and other disabilities. Not only will we have improved classrooms but we will have better tools to help our adults’ transition to the workforce and become contributing members of society. Most importantly, we give our families hope that their child or adult will live up to their full potential.

“ Sherwood Autism Center is life changing … They take your child when you feel hopeless and they see within that child all the possibilities that he or she can achieve. They bring out the potential in each child and change their lives. They restore your hope.”

– Brad and Teresa Doty, Sherwood Autism Center Parents
