For more information, visit barrie.ca/CelebrateBarrie Yearly Water Main Swabbing Program Has Begun in the City On May 19, 2015 and running for 8 to 10 days, the City of Barrie has begun swabbing approximately 23 kilometers of water main in the south end of the city. This project will run day and night and may include weekends. To view a map of the affected area, visit barrie.ca/WaterDistribution. The affected area roughly borders Chieftain Crescent, Mollard Court, Little Avenue and McConkey Place to the South, Huronia Road to the East, Jane Crescent, Adelaide Street, and Essa Road to the West and Gowan Street to the North. The purpose is to remove the sediment that builds up in the water main over time. The sediment is derived from minerals in the water. Some residences and businesses will experience water outages as part of the swabbing process, and will be given written notice in advance. Some residences and businesses will be affected more than once due to their location in respect to Water Main Valves and Fire Hydrants. Residents and businesses may experience some water discoloration during outages for short durations and should follow these guidelines: • Turn on a cold water tap and let the water run for a few minutes. • Do not choose a tap that has a water filter connected to it, or the sediment may clog your filter. • Do not use a hot water tap because it could draw sediment into your hot water tank. • Catch some water in a light-colored cup or container to see if it is clear. Proceed to use the water if it is clear. If the water doesn’t clear in 5 minutes, wait 30 minutes and try again. • During the outage as indicated in your written notice, water pressure will come and go, but please do not run any water during this time period as it could cause large quantities of sediment to plug your service/plumbing/appliances, etc. Apartment property managers, landlords and business operators: • Turn on a cold water tap near the water shut off valve (e.g. a tap in the mop sink in the maintenance room) and let the water run for a few minutes. • Catch some water in a light-colored cup or container to see if it is clear. • Restore water to the rest of the building when the water is clear. Cloudy Water: Water is cloudy because air captured in the water makes tiny bubbles. These bubbles are harmless and will disappear if the water sits for a few minutes. Drinking discolored water should not be harmful, however, it may not smell, taste, or look pleasant. If water is still discolored after two to three hours, call the City of Barrie at 705-792-7920. The City of Barrie will be monitoring the water clarity and chlorine residual in the water mains. For more information, visit barrie.ca/WaterDistribution. New Transit Contract: Getting You There With Care O ver the last several years, Barrie Transit’s prime motto is, “Getting you there!” To accomplish this mission, the City of Barrie revamped the entire transit service, including adding a new transit route system with new hubs, adding bike racks to buses and implementing a stop call/text system and a live bus map for predicting bus arrivals at all stops. But, many indicators were pointing that more was needed, and the City has signed a new transit contract that will maintain the current service while adding greater elements of customer care. “This new contract won’t change routes or the amount of vehicles on the road, but it will impact the rider experience,” says Dan Burton, Manager of Transit. “Our transit system belongs to Barrie residents and it should be as enjoyable and comfortable as possible–that’s been our focus with this service agreement.” Starting July 1st, MVT Canadian Bus Inc. will take over as the City of Barrie’s transit provider. The new 20-year agreement includes service level standards, with targets the provider must meet or it will face penalties. Many of the service level indicators are related to customer service, including the degree of customer satisfaction, measured through customer complaints and resolutions. Service reliability is another customer service indicator, measured by the provider’s ability to maintain on-time service. “Our riders’ needs are our priority, from the cleanliness of the vehicles, to the availability and friendliness of the staff,” notes Burton. “We expect our riders will notice a difference when the new contract starts in July.” One noticeable change will be moving Barrie Transit customer service staff to the Downtown Bus Terminal, where riders can buy tickets and interact with customer service staff face-to-face, on a daily basis. Providing this one point of direct client contact for ticket sales, customer service and customer communication, at the location which processes the greatest number of transit customers, will lead to increased customer knowledge and enhance their experience. On the City’s side of the equation, the one point of contact equals a streamlining of public processes by bringing them in house. This will assist in building a direct connection and understanding between our riders, our revenues and our planning aspects of the business. It’s simply more effective and efficient. To house service staff in the Downtown Bus Terminal, the City of Barrie will hire one full-time supervisor and part-time staff. The downtown terminal service will also look at opportunities in the future to offer further City services, such as sale of garbage tags, recreation passes, parking passes, etc., improving the level of service to all residents, not just transit riders. In fact, the new service contract is the result of an extensive procurement process that focused on improving value by boosting the quality of service to riders, while also providing the City with more flexibility and control. The current provider for Barrie Transit has been in place for more than 25 years. Existing staff will have the opportunity to benefit from their acquired skills and experience and apply for positions with the new provider. As for MVT Canadian Bus Inc., it is a subsidiary of MV Transportation Inc., the largest private provider of para-transit services and the largest privately-owned passenger transportation contracting firm based in the United States. The City of Barrie continues to encourage riders to provide feedback on their transit experience. Customers can call 705-739-4209, during regular business hours or email [email protected]. Starting July 1st, riders can also provide feedback directly to a customer service representative at the Downtown Bus Terminal, located at 24 Maple Avenue.
