Foundation : Global Company Prefix (GCP) + Application Identifier (AI)
Global Company Prefix : is a unique string of digits assigned to each company,
identifying it as the manufacturer throughout the entire product supply-chain.
The CPG is the root for all types of identifiers, be it of a product, an asset, a document
or a shipment. Allocated by the GS1 country organisation or GS1 global office.
A GTIN number (formerly known as EAN or UPC) has the following structure:
• Country Prefix
• Company Prefix
• Article number
• Check Digit

Application Identifier : AIs are numeric prefixes used in barcodes and
EPC/RFID-tags to define the meaning/application and format of encoded
data elements. GS1 has defined over a 100 Application Identifiers (AIs), all
integrated into ISO.

Group Discussion
For the next 20 min…
• Break up into 4 groups
• Choose a spokesperson
• Consider the question / issues
• Capture your thoughts / ideas on flipchart
Then, the spokesperson to present outcomes for 5 min.
© GS1 2016
Group Discussion Questions Traceability
• How big an issue is this for you?
1. Item Authentication – is the product genuine?
2. Accessing History of an Item / Chain of Custody?
3. Managing Certification and Compliance Data?
4. Product Recall?
5. Risk Management?
6. Other? …..
• Which of these is the most important for you?
• How are you addressing this issue today?
• How can standards (ID, Capture, Share) help?
• What are the challenges to implement industry standards within Defence sector to address this
issue?
54
Traceability is the ability to verify the history, location, or application of an item by means of documented recorded identification.
© GS1 2016
Group Discussion Questions Master Data
• What are the challenges you have today in exchanging master data with suppliers?
1. Poor data quality
2. Lack of common terms and definitions (i.e. dimensions)
3. Units of measure
4. Lack of structured data
5. Product Substitution / supersession / changes (inc. s/w versions)
6. Technology requirements on suppliers
7. Other? …..
• Which of these is the most important for you?
• How are you addressing this issue today?
• How can GS1 GDSN help?
• What are the challenges to implement industry standards within Defence sector to address this
issue?
55
Item Master Data relates to
information used to describe an item/product
regarding both physical and functional
attributes. Production variable information is
not considered to be master data (i.e. Batch
Numbers)
© GS1 2016
Group Discussion Questions Inventory and Logistics
• What are the challenges you have today with inventory management and logistics?
1. Inventory Accuracy
2. Volumetric data
3. Goods Receipt processes
4. Reverse logistics
5. Transport visibility
6. Interoperability (between systems and suppliers)
7. Other? …..
• Which of these is the most important for you?
• How are you addressing this issue today?
• How can industry standards help?
• What are the challenges to implement industry standards within Defence sector to address this
issue?
56
Industry Standards can help you answer the most critical
questions in inventory management and
logistics – what do I have, how much of it
and where is it.
© GS1 2016
Group Discussion Questions Maintenance, Repairs and Overhaul
• What are the challenges you have today with MRO?
1. Lifecycle management
2. Maintenance history
3. Too much / too little inventory?
4. Warranty management
5. Managing service kits
6. Obsolecence and write offs
7. Other? ….
• Which of these is the most important for you?
• How are you addressing this issue today?
• How can industry standards help?
• What are the challenges to implement industry standards within Defence sector to address this
issue?
57
MRO requires not only the ability for accurate and effective inventory management for spare
parts but also the capture of repair,
revision and maintenance history, bill
of materials and warranty management
