Knowledge-driven

During the initial phase of all study programmes, teaching staff will provide supervised learning structures, for instance lectures and seminars, practicals and training. As study progresses, students can increasingly steer their own study programme and decide how to acquire further knowledge. Working in groups is essential to learn from each other; in addition, students will design their own study programme through independent learning, practice-based cases, simulations, games and ‘skills labs’ (instruction rooms).

Practice-driven

All study programmes will include practical training from the first year of study; however, practical training is not a clearcut part. First, students will be introduced to practice under the supervision of a lecturer; for instance, small introductory research projects will be presented. These projects will gradually become more complicated, and will also involve working together with fellow students from other study programmes. Work placements and other combinations of ‘on-the-job training’ will be a step forward towards achieving more independence. The centres of expertise at Rotterdam University are also part of our study approach. Experts from professional practice, students and teaching staff are engaged in assignments from external clients.

From supervised to independent learning

During the first phase of the study programme students will be ‘in school’ and will be told clearly what is expected from them. Later on, they will practise their skills in practical classes and project groups. But they will not be left to their own devices. Their fellow students will support them and obviously also their lecturers will be available to assist them. In addition, their study career coach will keep track of their study progress and is able to help them if any study problems arise. Students will also exchange experiences with fellow students from their own study group or with senior students.

All our study programmes use the Rotterdam education model (Rem). This model will guarantee an ideal balance in all our study programmes between its three core elements:

knowledge, practical training and the students’ personal development.

At Rotterdam University students can make personal choices that are important to them in many ways. Two main options are the electives and the minor programme (specialization). No less than three hundred electives are available. Students can use electives to brush up their knowledge of subjects for which they have unsatisfactory results, or for additional learning. The minor programme chosen at the end of the third year of their study programme, is also important. Emphasizing these personal subjects in their study programme is considered so important that a fixed day has been scheduled for this purpose in the academic calendar; in addition, students can work on their personal projects on a scheduled day off.

Teaching methods at Rotterdam University

In all study programmes at Rotterdam University, various teaching methods are applied. Theory classes, but also practicals and project groups, in which students have to show their skills. They will work on projects together in small groups and are expected to collect information independently as well. Student support and supervision are guaranteed for all teaching methods.

i did my placement at syntens and was quite successful at an international horticultural fair. Looking back, i can conclude that i have learned a lot. i got plenty of space: designing the set-up for such a project, which steps to take. organizing the stand, putting the company profiles on the website and contacting companies proved to be quite a challenge. i also managed to acquire some nice new jobs. Tomorrow i am flying to spain for a couple of weeks. At a major fair i am going to contact some spanish companies. According to my placement supervisor, my success largely lies in my independence. i started with the fair, but i recognized the opportunity to do more research in spain. Using these opportuni-ties is very important!

The profile of the International Business and Management Studies (IBMS) student is based on competencies which were defined after intensive consultation with the busi-ness world and society concerning the knowledge, skills and attitude needed by future managers. You can find positions in, for example, financial management, market-ing management, international business management, human resources management or logistics management. As an IBMS graduate you are flexible and ready to travel extensively in positions entailing frequent international contacts; in many cases your home base will be outside the Netherlands. The IBMS programme perfectly caters for this aspect by offering students the opportunity to participate in foreign exchange programmes and industrial placements abroad. By the end of the programme you will be able to understand the differences and opportunities in major glo-bal and regional markets, critically evaluate and summarize differences and opportunities in specific international mar-keting settings and communicate effectively in a business marketing context, both orally and in writing.

Push back your limits in practice

You study the huge diversity of other cultures and learn how to deal with major differences in society and culture in order to connect with trade partners all over the world. Such notions as entrepreneurial strategy, marketing strategy, cross-cultural management or marketing trends get a totally different meaning in this context. Such things

as sales techniques or negotiation skills take on a completely different form as well. While studying International Business and Management Studies you have the oppor-tunity to gain international experience during two semesters: one doing a placement and one for a stay at one of our foreign partner universities. There are exchange programmes with dozens of universities world-wide. Rotterdam Business School students are taking their placements all over the world with companies like Coca Cola, general Motors, BMW, Philips, ABN-AMRO, Maersk, Ikea, l’Oréal, Sheraton and Shell, but also with smaller – international or local – companies. Rotterdam Business School can truly be said to be breaking down barriers in many fields.

advanCeMent of the StudY

IBMS is a broad study programme covering all aspects of business and management. The profile of the programme is based on ‘competencies’. The IBMS programme requires a good starting level of English. If you do not meet the entry level requirements for the IBMS programme, taking one of the Pre-IBMS courses offered by Rotterdam Business School is an option. See the section ‘admission requirements’ on page 26 for requirements and preparatory courses.

As the study programme progresses, you are expected to increasingly control your own learning process. You will be able to contribute to your own development through elective modules, a study abroad programme, minors, placement and final thesis assignments. By means of these you achieve your independence, progressing gradually from guided to supervised and subsequently to independ-ent and self-reliant learning. You learn to apply the rules of international trade: the legal aspects of doing global busi-ness, including options for resolving international business disputes, tackling pitfalls such as international licensing of intellectual property and dealing with the complexities of working with multiple cultures.

introductory year

Your first year is an intro-ductory year (propaedeutic phase), in which you will get a clear view of the study programme, its goals and the professional occupations. Lectures, team teaching, case analysis, group discussions and professional literature provide the basis for applying the principles learned in a setting that is as realistic as possible. As a member of a multidiscipli-nary team, including students from the marketing, finance and logistics programmes, you learn to think like a gen-eral manager rather than a marketeer, accountant or finance expert. You need to learn to think strategically by taking into account each step taken by a company to achieve its goals. You will develop skills in leadership and working together and receive training in communi-cative skills such as present-ing, taking part in meetings, negotiating and taking minutes. You also study a second language: Spanish, French, Dutch or german with English as the language of instruction.

main Phase

In the second year, the focus of the IBMS programme is similar to that of the first year. You will be expected to grow gradually in your development. The third year starts with a placement period. The fourth and final year contains a study-abroad period of six months. Our network of inter-national partner schools (see overview page 16)offers the possibility of a one-semester exchange. No extra tuition fees are charged for participating in any of the exchange programmes, in which modules will betaken corresponding with the student’s chosen minor (specialization). Credits obtained abroad (max. 30) will be added to the portfolio. Finally, there is the thesis, in which you show that you have acquired all competencies expected in the world of International Business and Management.

Teaching methods

The education in the propaedeutic phase and in the main phase consists of a proper mix of lectures and tutorials, practical classes, training programmes, case studies, simula-tion games and independent assignments. Acting independ-ently and being responsible for your own progress is the starting point. This does not mean that you are on your own. Throughout your studies you are supervised and coached by tutors and study career coaches, who you can always turn to.

In the first and second years of IBMS a programme is of-fered which covers all IBMS minors. There are modules for Finance & Accounting, Logistics Management and Marketing/International Management. These modules are taught in a set structure: first principles, then advanced and finally applied. Next to these there are Project Management and Organization Management (Organizational Design & Management, Organizational Behaviour & Management, International Environment & Business, (Social) Behaviour & Management). Of course there are Economics and Research Methods and Busi-ness Law.

In the profession-specific part of the programme you find for example the subjects Critical Thinking and Organisation Management (year 2), European Affairs, Emerging Markets, Business Ethics/Corporate Social Responsibility, Risk Management, globalization, Consultancy & Change Management, Entrepreneurship and Strategic Innovation Management (years 3 and 4). These are subjects that are offered in the IBMS programme alongside the minor of your choice.

This track is a four-year-programme for students with a Dutch havo or mbo level 4 diploma or a foreign equivalent.

BaCheloR pRogRaMMe IBMS faSt-tRaCk

In addition to the regular four year bachelor programme, IBMS also comes in a fast-track three year version for students who have completed Dutch vwo, mbo level 4 International Trade and Commerce or the International Bac-calaureate. In this programme you take the first two years of IBMS in one year. In the first semester (Autumn) you follow the introductory year and in the second semester (Spring) the second year of the regular programme is offered. After this you continue your studies in the third year of the four-year programme.

BaCheloR pRogRaMMe IBMS aCCeleRated tRaCk

Rotterdam Business School offers a 1,5 or 2-year Acce-lerated IBMS programme for students who have already obtained a two or three year college degree in business or have finished either two or three years at University (busi-ness related). Students with a minimum of one year of work experience after finishing two or three years of studying can apply for the 1,5-year programme. Students without relevant work experience are required to take a 6-month placement after completing the 1,5-year programme. graduates of the Accelerated International Business and Management Studies receive a BBA degree, accredited by the Dutch accreditation council NVAO.

plaCeMent/gRaduatIoneleCtIve ModuleS

In order to be able to put the theories of international business in a practical setting, many students choose to gain working experience abroad, in an industrial place-ment. Your placement is an integral part of the study programme. However, it is also possible to take a placement in the Netherlands, preferably in an international company. The IBMS programme is a challenging management study programme containing all aspects of international business and management. Your graduation placement is also an industrial placement (with a possibility to do your placement abroad) with the emphasis of doing a research assignment for the company.

All students at Rotterdam University are to fill in part of their study programme with elective modules, which give them room to add to their personal development. Students make their own choices, which adds to achieving their independ-ence, by progressing gradually from guided to supervised and subsequently to independent and self-reliant learning.

Knowledge centre

In a knowledge centre lecturers and students from various study programmes and professionals from the professional practice jointly study current issues. Under the supervision of an associate professor they do research and organise meetings in order to share this knowledge. This, in turn, results in new knowledge that is relevant to society and will be used in practice. RBS students can turn to the knowledge centre Interna-tional Business.

Rotterdam Business school

Rotterdam Business School (RBS) is an expert in inter-national management studies. It was founded in 1990 as the International School of Economics Rotterdam, which developed study programmes in English. Today, RBS is part of Rotterdam University and provides three types of study programmes: bachelor programmes, master programmes and special programmes. With these three types of programmes, Rotterdam Business School really offers inspiration for a lifetime! The profile of the programme is based on ‘competencies’. Competencies are more than just knowledge: a student does not only need to have knowledge of separate subjects but must also be able to manage corporate processes. choice of study counselling

Students who have not made up their minds yet on which study to choose can take part in the course choice of study counselling. This course, which is only given in Dutch, is available particularly for future examinees (senior general secondary education, preuniversity education and secondary vocational educa-tion). During these meetings students will team up under the supervision of a choice of study counsellor. By perform-ing different assignments, students will gain under-standing of their capacities, interests, expectations for the future and actions to decide on their choice of study. Tag-along days

There are a few possibilities to tag-along with an individual student for a day. For more information contact the Office of Information.

Preparation course mbo

IBMS students from the Albeda College, Zadkine College and the DaVinci College have the possibility to join a pre-programme in IBMS during their final year. This pre-programme is a preparation for the Fast Track IBMS programme for mbo students. During two quarters they will have Study Career Coaching, Finance and Logistics classes for one morning per week. Students who successfully complete this pre-programme will be given priority in the admission procedure for the Fast Track IBMS programme.

3. Tuition Fee for eU students

The tuition fee for the aca-demic year 2011-2012 is not known at the time of print-ing this brochure. For the academic year 2010-2011 the tuition fee for students from EU countries was € 1.672,-. Students from EU countries are entitled to a limited Dutch student grant.

The costs of books, readers and other materials range from € 300,- to € 700,-, depending on the study programme.

The admission examination for IBMS students consists of English and Economics. The examinations are held in April, May, June, July and August. Start your application at Studylink (www.studielink.nl), the Central digital Registration system of The Netherlands.Your registration will be considered by the Student Service Centre of Rotterdam University.They will provide you with further information and will ask you to submit certified copies of all necessary documents. You have to be aware that all these documents need to be translated in English, French or german.

Application procedure

Please apply before 1 June. The following steps are essential for the application procedure:¬ Submit an application form, downloadable from

rotterdambusinessschool.nl with (certified) copies and English translations of your diploma(s), grades list(s), birth certificate and a copy of your passport, plus five passport photos.

¬ Rotterdam Business School acknowledges receipt of the application form and informs you of the details of the intake interview.

¬ If possible, the intake interview takes place in country of origin (either in person or by telephone).

¬ If you are accepted, you receive a letter of admission, an invoice and all necessary documentation from Rotterdam Business School.

¬ You pay the invoice and send the signed Statement of Understanding to the school.

¬ Rotterdam Business School applies for a provisional residence permit (MVV) at the Immigration Office, organises practical details such as a bank account, health insurance and ac-commodation reservations.

¬ If applicable, RBS informs you about the date you can collect your MVV.

¬ You can collect your MVV at the consulate or embassy in your country.

¬ You apply for a ticket.¬ Arrival in The Netherlands

prior to commencing the course.

NOTE: Non-European students should be able to show they have reached the required English level. They have to show an English test certificate with a TOEFL iBT score of at least 79 or an IELTS score of at least 6.0 or equivalent. Students from China should always be able to show an IELTS cer-tificate with a score of at least 6.0 and a NESO certificate. Information about this can be obtained from www.nesobei-jing.com.
