RATIONALE:

In the past the images we used to see in magazines, newspapers and advertising hoardings told the truth as they showed things as they were captured. Nowadays with the advent of technology and sophisticated programmes such as Adobe Photoshop there are often distortions of the truth because alterations can be made for creative, artistic or other reasons. Image manipulation is big business and you will explore this in your research. You will also create your own images in the style of one artist.

Tasks of the Project:

1. Identify areas of modern art and design where digital media is used and how it is made

using applications such as Photoshop. Identify and evaluate examples of Digital

Application and manipulation used in imagery, (Opie) being a starting point. An

illustrated overview on the style and techniques of Julian Opie as detailed in the briefing

notes on digital manipulation. Unit 34 P1 M1 D1

2. Prepare your own source material and create your own original ‘Opie’ style images one

from a digital picture and the other from a scanned negative or photographic print of your

choice Unit 34 P2 P3 M2 M3 D2 D3

3. Place in digital workbook all activities; all illustrated working practices and actions

undertaken. Unit 34 P2 P3 M2 M3 D2 D3

4. Using your own creativity choose an analogue image of your choice to scan in and create

an Opie from an analogue print. Unit 34 P3 P4 M3 M4

5. Give an overall evaluation of your work. Unit 34 P5 M4 D3

Materials required for this Project:

USB Memory Stick DSLR and Memory Card Internet and Book research Project sheet and folder

Briefing Notes:

Research:

This will give you a contextual insight into digital photography. Look at the use of digital

technology and manipulation created with Photoshop as well as looking into the works created

by Julian Opie. Give an overview of digital media with relevant imagery showing how he

takes a photograph and creates the image. Examine Opie’s style of work and try to review how

this was done using Photoshop techniques. Explain how the use of changing technology has

changed the way images are put together with the use of digital photography and Photoshop.

Workbook:

This should contain your research and ideas for images that you may use. A review on digital manipulation in modern art and design.

Two final images produced with illustrated working practices in the style of Opie. A scanned in analogue image manipulated into the style of Opie A final evaluation.

Evaluation: A written evaluation based on your working practices and research.

Presentation:

Two finished Opie style images, one from a digital source and one scanned in and manipulated from an analogue negative or print.

The original analogue negative or print that was manipulated into an Opie styled image.
