TRACTOR PREPARATION

Before performing these instructions, refer to the Serviceand Adjustments section of your tractor owner's manualfor specific safety instructions.

• Allow engine, muffler and exhaust deflector to coolbefore beginning.

• Remove any front or rear attachment which ismounted to your tractor.

• Remove the mower deck. Refer to your tractor owner'smanual for removal instructions. Mark all loose partsand save for reassembly.

• Remove the tractor hood. Refer to your tractor owner'smanual for removal instructions.

IMPORTANT: Right hand (R.H.) and left hand (L.H.) sideof the tractor are determined from the operators positionwhile seated on the tractor.

REMOVAL OF PARTS FROM CARTON

Remove all loose parts, parts bags and hardwarebags from the carton. Lay out and identify parts andhardware using the illustrations on pages 4, 5 and 6.The parts bag labeled for 247 model tractors will notbe needed.

IDENTIFYYOUR TRACTOR iNSTALL SIDE PLATES

STEP 1: (SEE FIGURE 1)o Look under the front of your tractor. If there is a single

mower deck suspension bracket located underneaththe middle of the front axle, continue on to step2. if your tractor does not have a mower decksuspension bracket underneath the middle of thefront axle, skip to step 21 on page 14 for tractorswith dual suspension brackets.

STEP 2: (SEE FIGURE 2)Remove the browning shield from the front of thetractor as shown. Hold onto the shield as you removethe second screw to prevent it from falling.Be sure to reinstall the browning shield when soinstructed in step 3.

STEP 3: (SEE FIGURE 3)Fasten the R.H. Side Plate (bend facing out) to thefront three holes in the tractor frame using three 3/8"x 1" carriage bolts, three 1/2" x 1-1/2" washers (seenote) and three 3/8" flange nuts. For the rear hole, usea 5/16" x 1" carriage bolt, a 1/2" x 1-1/2" washer anda 5/16" nylock nut Place the washers between thetractor frame and the side plate. Repeat for L.H. sideplate.

• Reinstall the browning shield onto the tractor frameusing the original screws.

NOTE: If there is an engine mounting plate (shown withdotted lines) leave the washer off the bolt that goesthrough the plate.

, Remove the bolt, if present, in the hole directly behindthe brake rod on the left side of the tractor frame.

* Attach the L.H. Hanger Bracket (tube facing out) to thehole using a 5/16" × 3/4" self threading bolt.

* Install a round head shoulder bolt into the hole that is9-1/2" to the rear of the bolt you just installed. Secureit with a 3/8" flange nut on the inside of the frame.

closest to the pulley. Do not tighten yet.

STEP 10: (SEE FIGURE 10)• Three different length drive belts are included with

your snow thrower. Tractors with manual attachmentclutches and single front deck suspension brackets usethe 56" drive belt with #48138 printed on the outside ofthe belt. DO NOT USE the other drive belts.

• Slightly loosen the hex bolt next to the fiat idler pulley.install the drive belt down between the hex bolt and thefiat idler pulley with the fiat side of the belt against thepulley. Retighten the hex bolt.

• Loop the belt around the large v-pulley, placing itbetween the v-pulley and the hex bolt next to the pulley.Place the belt to the inside of the other fiat idler pulley.

Did you select the correct drive belt for yourtractor? Using the wrong length belt maycause premature bearing or belt failure.

STEP11: (SEEFIGURE11)* Find the cable clip that is attached to the left side

of the tractor frame underneath the footrest. Openthe clip and remove the mower clutch cable. Do notremove the clip from the tractor frame. The cablereattaches to the clip when using the mower deck.

* Move the attachment clutch lever on the dash panel tothe disengaged position.

* Place the clutch/idler assembly on the floor on the leftside of the tractor.

* Attach the tractor's mower clutch cable to the cablebracket on the clutch/idler assembly. Secure the cablehousing guide (groove down) to the cable bracketusing the original collar and a 5/64" hair cotter pin.

* Place a 1/4" spacer on the welded pin on the idlerarm. Hook the end of the clutch cable spring over thepin and secure it with a 1/4" washer and a 5/64" haircotter pin.

* Align cable bracket with welded pin and tighten thenut assembled in step 9.

STEP 12: (SEE FIGURE 12)• Attach the clutch/idler assembly to the tractor frame.

Hook the notched rear pulley frame brackets onto thetwo shoulder bolts assembled to the outside of the

tractor frame. Lift the front of the assembly and attachit to the R.H. and L.H. hanger brackets using two pivotlock pins and 1/8" hairpin cotters.Loosely attach the mower clutch cable to the left sideof the tractor frame with a nylon tie. Do not pull thenylon tie completely tight. The cable may need to beremoved from the nylon tie when using the mowerdeck.

STEP 13: (SEE FIGURE 13)Assemble the drive belt onto the engine pulley firstand then onto the large pulley on top of the clutch/idler assembly. The belt must be placed inside theengine pulley belt keeper(s) and between the largepulley and the keeper bolt next to it.

iMPORTANT: Do Not assemble the "V" belt outside of

the engine pulley keepers or outside of the keeper boltnext to the large pulley.

Place the belt to the inside of the idlerpulley and the belt keeper bolt located beside thelarge pulley.Place tension on the belt by pulling the left sidetensioning chain out as far as the 3/32" hairpin cotterin the chain will allow. Secure the chain in this positionby inserting a 1/8" hairpin cotter through the chain.

STEP 29: (SEE FIGURE 29)• Move the attachment clutch lever on the dash panel to

the disengaged (down) position.Screw the trunnion onto the end of the snow thrower

engagement rod.Locate the clutch arm (where the mower clutch rodwas connected) underneath the right hand side thetractor, just to the inside of the suspension arm. Ifthere is an extension attached to the clutch lever, theextension, bolt and nut must be removed and storedwith the mower deck.IMPORTANT: Re=attach the extension to the clutch

STEP 55: (SEE FIGURE 54)• Place the tractor and snow thrower on a flat, level

surface so that the tractor can be rolled forward toattach the snow thrower.Remove the Attachment Pin from the snow thrower.

Extend the auger belt out behind the snow thrower,making sure the belt is still looped over the top ofthe large drive pulley and underneath the two idlerpulleys. The "V" side of the belt must be seated in thegrooves of all three pulleys.Roll the tractor up behind the snow thrower, centeringit between the snow thrower's mounting plates.Raise the rear of the snow thrower by lifting up onthe lift handle until the notches in the mounting platesalign with the shoulder bolts in the tractor's sideplates. Guide the bolts into the notches.To ease the assembly of the auger drive belt, delaythe installation of the attachment pin until you haveassembled the belt as instructed in steps 56 and 57.

ATTACH REFLECTORS TO REAR FENDER

STEP 60: (SEE FIGURE 58)* if your tractor is not equipped with rear reflectors,

assemble the supplied rear reflectors to the rearfender. Place the reflectors as close to the bottom of

the fender and as far apart as the shape of the fenderwill allow.

SETTING THE AUGER BELT TENSION

STEP 59: (SEE FIGURE 57)• Pull the tensioning chain until the end of the spring is

pulled through the hole in the side of the Clutch/Idlerassembly. Install a 1/8" hairpin cotter through the endof the spring, securing it on the outside of the Clutch/idler assembly.

iMPORTANT: For correct belt tension, the 1/8" hairpincotter must attach to the end of the spring, not to thechain.

NOTE; To prevent the chain from dragging on theground, loop the end of the chain though the pivot lockpin. Refer to figure 45 on page 21.

Before you operate your snow thrower, please reviewthe following checklist to help ensure that you wiilobtain the best performance from your snow thrower.

Make sure all assembly instructions have beencompleted with all bolts and nuts properly tightened.Make sure the correct drive belt was installed.

Make sure the drive belt and auger belt are routedproperly around pulleys and inside all belt keepers.Check discharge chute for proper rotation.Check operation of tilt control for upper chute.Verify that the lift handle will lock into and releasefrom the raised transport position. (Refer to theService and Adjustments section.)Check skid shoe adjustment. (Refer to the Serviceand Adjustments section.)

BEFORE STARTING• Use the end of assembly checklist to verify that all

instructions have been properly completed.Make sure the skid shoes are adjusted to maintainadequate ground clearance between the snowthrower and the type of surface to be cleared. (Referto the Service and Adjustments section.)Make sure the tractor engine has the correct oilfor winter operation (SAE 5W-30). Refer to tractorowner's manual.

HOW TO STARTYOUR SNOW THROWER

The tractor should be sitting with the engine runningat full throttle. Move the attachment clutch to theengaged position, starting the snow thrower before

the tractor clutch is engaged.

HOW TO STOP YOUR SNOW THROWERTo stop the snow thrower, disengage the tractor'sattachment clutch lever for manual clutches or theclutch switch for electric clutches. Refer to your tractorowner's manual.

HOW TO USE YOUR SNOW THROWER

CAUTION: Never direct dischargetowards bystanders or windows. Do notallow anyone in front of unit.

CONTROLLING SNOW DISCHARGE

To control the direction snow is thrown, the dischargechute has 180 degrees of rotation. Turn the crank rodto rotate the chute to the right or the left.

To control the distance snow is thrown, the uppersection of the discharge chute pivots up and down.Push forward on the chute tilt handle to pivot thechute down, decreasing the distance snow is thrown.Pull back on the handle to pivot the chute up,increasing the distance snow is thrown.

REMOVINGSNOWSnowremovalconditionsvarygreatlyfromlightfluffysnowfalltowetheavysnow.Operatinginstructionsmustbeflexibletofit theconditionsencountered.Theoperatormustadaptthelawntractorandsnowthrowerto depthofsnow,winddirection,temperatureandsurfaceconditions.

Beforebeginningoperation,thoroughlyinspecttheareaofoperationandremovealldoormats,sleds,boards,wiresandotherforeignobjects.Thespiralaugerspeedisdirectlyrelatedto enginespeed.Formaximumsnowremovalanddischarge,maintainhighenginer.p.m.(fullthrottle).It isadvisabletooperatethelawntractorata slowgroundspeed(1stgear)forsafeandefficientsnowremoval.Indeep,driftedorbankedsnowit willbenecessarytousefullthrottleandaslowgroundspeed(1stgear).Driveforwardintothesnow,depressthetractor'sclutch-brakepedalandallowthespiralaugertoclearthesnow.Repeatthismethoduntilapathiscleared.Onthesecondpass,overlapthefirstenoughtoallowthesnowthrowerto handlethesnowwithoutrepeatedstoppingandstartingofforwardmotion.

Inextremelydeepsnow,raisethesnowthrowerfromthegroundto removethetoplayeranddriveforwardonlyuntilthetractorsfronttiresreachtheunclearedbottomlayerofsnow.Depressthetractor'sclutch-brakepedalandallowthespiralaugertoclearthesnow.Reversethetractorandlowerthesnowthrowertotheground.Drivethetractorforwarduntilthesnowagainbecomestoodeep.Repeatingthisprocessintoandoutof driftswilleventuallycleareventhedeepestofsnowpiles.Ifthesnowthrowerbecomescloggedwithsnoworjammedwithaforeignobject,disengagethesnowthrowerimmediatelyandshutoffthetractorengine.Unclogthesnowthrowerbeforeresumingoperation.

DANGER: Shutoffengineanddisengagesnowthrowerbeforeuncloggingdischargechute.Unclogusingawoodenstick,notyourhands.

OPERATING TiPSDischarge snow down wind whenever possible.To help prevent snow from sticking to the snow thrower,allow the snow thrower to reach outdoor temperaturebefore using it. A light coat of wax may also be appliedto the inside surface of the snow thrower housing anddischarge chute.Use tire chains to improve traction.Use rear wheel weights to improve traction.Before the first snowfall, remove all stones, sticks andother objects which could become hidden by the snow.Permanent obstacles should be marked for visibility.Overlap each pass slightly to assure complete snowremoval.

LUBRICATIONOil all pivot points on the snow thrower.

• Oil the pivot points of the two idler arms on the clutch/idler assembly.

• Apply penetrating oil to the control cables of thedischarge chute.

• Apply a good grade of spray lubricant to the triggerassembly and the chute tilt control assembly.

CHECK SCRAPER AND SHOES FOR WEAR

(Refer to figures 59 and 60 on page 28.)The scraper plate and skid shoes on the bottom of thesnow thrower are subject to wear. To prevent damageto the spiral auger housing, replace plate and shoesbefore wear is excessive.

CAUTION:Beforeservicingoradjustingthesnowthrower,shutofftheengine,removethesparkplugwire(s),settheparkingbrakeandremovethekeyfromthetractorignition.

REPLACING AUGER BELT• Disengage the tractor's attachment clutch.

Lower the snow thrower to the ground.Remove the attachment pin.Lock the snow thrower's lift handle in the downposition to decrease belt tension.Release the spring tension from the auger belt idlerarm on the bottom of the clutch/idler assembly.Remove the auger drive belt from the clutch/idlerassembly and from the spiral auger housing.Install new belt over top of large auger drive pulleyand under the two side idler pulleys. Twist the belt 1/4turn to seat the "V" of the belt in the groove of eachidler pulley. Refer to figure 55 on page 24.Assemble the belt onto the clutch/idler assembly.

SKiD SHOE ADJUSTMENTThe skid shoes are mounted on each side of the spiralauger housing. They regulate the distance the scraperplate is raised above the plowing surface. Whenremoving snow from a gravel driveway or and unevensurface, it is advisable to keep the scraper plate ashigh above the surface as possible to prevent possibledamage to the spiral auger. On blacktop or concretesurface, keep the scraper plate as close to the surfaceas possible.Raise the snow thrower off the ground and place ablock under each end of the scraper plate. Loosen thesix hex nuts securing the skid shoes to the housing.Adjust the skid shoes up or down and retighten thenuts securely. Adjust both skid shoes to the sameheight to keep the housing and the scraper plate level.See figure 59.

LiFT RELEASE CABLE ADJUSTMENTIf the lift rod does not lock the snow thrower securelyin the transport position, loosen the upper hex nut onthe lift bracket a few turns and tighten the lower hexnut. Refer to figure 48 on page 22.If the lift rod fails to unlock completely to lower thesnow thrower, loosen the lower hex nut on the liftbracket a few turns and tighten the upper hex nut.Refer to figure 48 on page 22.

CLUTCH DISENGAGEMENT ADJUSTMENT(For tractors with engagement rod clutches only.Not for electric clutches or cable clutches)If the spiral auger on the snow thrower does not stopwhen the attachment clutch lever on the tractor is

disengaged, then adjustment is necessary. Proceed asfollows. Refer back to figure 33 on page 17.

Place the attachment clutch lever in the disengagedposition.Remove the hairpin cotter from the engagement rodtrunnion and lift the trunnion out of the hole in the idlerarm.Screw the trunnion a few turns towards the front endof the rod.

Replace the trunnion into the hole in the idler arm andsecure it with the hairpin cotter.Check the operation of the snow thrower. If the spiralaugers still do not stop, repeat the above steps untilthe augers stop when the attachment clutch lever isplaced in the disengaged position.

SPIRAL AUGERSThe spiral augers are secured to the auger shaft withtwo shear bolts and nylock nuts. If you hit a foreignobject or if ice jams the augers, the snow thrower isdesigned so that the bolts will shear.If the augers will not turn, check to see if the shearbolts have sheared. See figure 60. Two replacementshear bolts and nylock nuts have been provided withthe snow thrower. For future use order part number710-0890A shear bolt and number 47810 nylock nut.

STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS• Lower the snow thrower to the ground.

Remove the snow thrower from the tractor.Clean the snow thrower thoroughly. Wash off any saltdeposit which may have dried on the thrower andhousing.Any bare metal that has become exposed should bepainted or coated with a light oil to prevent rust.Store in a dry place.

REMOVING THE SPIRAL AUGER HOUSING* Lower the snow thrower to the ground.

Remove the attachment pin. See figure 54 on page24.Lock the snow thrower's lift handle in the downposition to decrease belt tension.Release the spring tension from the auger belt idlerarm on the bottom of the clutch/idler assembly.Remove the auger drive belt from the clutch/idlerassembly. See figure 56 on page 24.Pull the spiral auger housing assembly off of thetractor.

PARTS TO REMOVE AT END OF SEASON

Remove the clutch/idler assembly. (The two hangerbrackets and the two shoulder bolts may be leftattached to the tractor frame.)Remove the drive belt from the engine pulley.If you replaced the engine pulley keeper on a manualattachment clutch tractor, reinstall the tractor's originalengine pulley keeper. See figure 33 on page 17 orfigure 39 on page 19.If you have a rod operated attachment clutch, removethe engagement rod from the tractor's clutch arm. Seefigure 29 on page 16.If a front mounted attachment is to be used, removethe side plates from the tractor. Be sure to assemblebolts back into the empty holes in the tractor frame.

&WARNING: To avoid serious injury, operate your tractor up anddown the face of slopes, never across the face. Do not operateon slopes greater than 10 degrees. Make turns gradually toprevent tipping or loss of control. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes. Braking may be affected bytractor attachment. Reduce speed on slopes.
