Operative plan of work for training local security forces inIraq and Afghanistan

    War in Iraq today

The reason of success of the Iraq mojaheds is in limitation of the American commandwho is not admitting freedom of the initiative in units that is clear but the main thing of limitation of the American administration who has decided to shift the responsibility for conducting war on unprepared local security forces. Coalition armies having entrustedkey questions of protection of ways of communication and the control over settlements tothe local allies, have cast the country into chaos. Iraq divided between three main, hostileto each other communities: Sunits,Shiits and Kurdish, was plus to it torn by struggle of

parties and tribes, and also naturally by struggle of local clans, and thus armed forceswere the main field of struggle between them. If to this also to add departmentaldissociation between army (ICDC), National Guards, a state security and usual police it iseasy to understand that mojaheds of various movements, thousands deserted here fromneighboring countries, including from Saudi Arabia and Iran felt here like a duck to water and imposing the fights upon enemies in settlements, increasing embitterment of localinhabitants against western white-faced giaours, thus also pursuing an overall objective indestruction of those in a local society who support the USA and their ally forces. Thoughthe coalition Air Forces supervised all deserted Iraq, badly adapted to guerrilla war, according to the above mentioned policy on roads of Iraq there practically weren t wellequipped check points, and coalition armies were engaged of self-protection only.Different equipments of local formations, which sometimes looked like the robbers of Ali-Baba, could not struggle of course effectively with mojaheds. Everybody is surprisedat inability of the last ones to start large-scale mine war but probably it was caused by badorganization.Certainly using the correct organization of service on check points, equipped the last oneswith a double gate, with the protected site of road between them, with high walls

protecting from sniper fire, using dogs to check the vehicles with explosives and also to patrol (though when the weather is hot dog are not applicable) , and organizereconnaissance and striking forces for search and destruction of the enemy in a wide zonearound of protected objects, it would change the situation for the better. However it isnecessary to take into account that patrols, convoys, and also the various civilorganizations would remain vulnerable enough by all means. In Israel, despite on the big

practice, and they could not reliably secure a society against condemned men terrorists, and the most effective means were in active search and destruction of the enemy leadersand organizers by special force operations.

Standard Operative Procedures for training local Special Forces units inAfghanistan and Iraq

1.Training plan for infantry education of security units

This plan is based on the fact of great difference in the experience in preparing of recruiting people. Taking into account that the previous experience usually is not usedand because of it (and also because clan system) together with experienced staff one canmeet the personal who are not prepared and have low level of motivation. I think that wedon't consider the previous experience of trainees students. They are the fresher now, that's all. Thats why the practical group lessons are proposed to hold on theterritory with the purpose to take part in competition between the students. The trainingwill be held during long marches (daytime and nighttime lessons) plus strict disciplineand repeated exercises, to form battle reflex. I think to have battle reflex it is necessaryto repeat the same actions several times. One should keep doing for example; field

stripping of assault rifle according to the rules up to you can see that. They do it withoutany efforts, professionally.Complex lessons during daytime and night must be conducted in the last quarter of termof training when knowledge and skills of separate subjects must be united andtransformed into the ability to act in combat. First of all, it is necessary todefine - how many days you have for training .Every training day can have 6-8 studylessons (no more).Next: it is necessary to divide all the time into the subjects and theninto the themes. One subject can have 3-4 hours a day, except of tactical and speciallessons, which can last all day long, for example, field lesson according to the topic "Unitin defense. By the way it is necessary to include drill and of course - one line formation, two lines formation, turns to the right/left while standing/moving. It makes the

subordinates to be disciples and alleviate the conduction of the training.

I'd like to remind you that according to military experts Kurds haveHigher psychological and physical abilities than Arabs and Kurds areMore reliable than Arabs.

Lessons.1.Field stripping of small arms that is repeated several times. Security rules are observed.8 hours: theory - 2 hours training - 6 hours plus training for 30-40 min the morning

before breakfast in a day (before lessons)2.Types of shooting(with the help of belt, from one knee, forest Guards method(sitting

on the land), Bedouins method (sitting on the bent leg), lying on the earth .Shooting fromthe gun using one hand or two hands. Shooting on the shooting fields controlling the truetechnique of shooting. Give preference to shooting lying on the earth from the shelter. This type must be the main type. Shooting from one knee and while standing should bedelivered from the shelter. We don't teach to shoot while standing, and from one knee, especially to fire in long bursts. Its the waste of ammunition. In addition, shooting withtwo hands is expedient too when shooting from static position lying on the earth (veryaccurate) and quick shooting to frontal moving target (vehicles).

  • 8/14/2019 Operative Plan of Work for Training Local Security Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan

    3/14

3.Methods of transferring the weapons from transport into combat status i.e. without belt, holding on the elbow and with the belt(belt on the right/left shoulder with free left/righthand, belt on the neck, belt on the chest). We should pay attention to it and drill itsystematically. It is very important to change the positions from any position to be ready

    for fire.

    4. Changing the positions: from standing position to kneeling position and to lying position. Crossing the place using two line formations:A) "Wave" methodB) "Penetrate" methodYou should pay attention to it and drill it systematically. It is very importantTo change the positions.

    5. Gesture training (Signals of the hand (Lie! Sit! Stand! Enemy! Ahead! (From the right, from the left, behind), mines, everybody come here! Go away everybody! We have dead

(wounded)) and one syllable sound comment. Silence is observed while moving. It isnecessary to practice even before or after the lessons, during breaks. The students mustunderstand gesture as deaf-and-dumb people understand their language.

    6. Transform from line formations to columns (one by one) and vice versa. At the beginning taking steps, than running. Transformation into one, two, three columns.Actions by one line formation and one or two columns simultaneously.

    7. Training actions by 3 men (one is moving, two are covering; or one is covering, twoare moving).Searching the footprints. Checking mine presence and avoiding sniper andmortar fire. Cross-country movement and movement along the roads. We should teachthem to be afraid of any roads and paths. They should understand that it is dangerous, itcan be mined, and there can be ambush, attack. The should move outside the roads.

    8. Tactical lessons: Actions are conducted by two groups: one is attacking and the secondis covering and vice versa.A) Destruction of firing enemy points (sniper or machine gunner)B) Destruction of the enemy (who are firing from moving vehicles),Searching and surrounding.C)Antimine activity and fire ambushes. Counterattacks methods andGoing away methods. We should teach them to "stretch" the enemy sniper, i.e.immediately after his first shot the group. Is divided into several parts and go to differentdirections. The sniper begins getting nervous, he can not shoot in a proper way. Dontsave the wounded, the sniper will kill him and plus two or three man. After sniper is shotyou will help the wounded. Also we should teach them to use smoke boxes or grenades torescue the wounded.

9.Moving on vehicles with shooting sector, from the right/left/towards. Training for drivers, basis of convoy security. Lessons of circle defense. We should teach to leave the

    4/14

vehicle immediately at any speed (it is safely to jump off the vehicle to the ground at thespeed under 60 km per hour.

10.Checking the vehicles and persons on Control Points. Methods of checking rules of fire security for sectors not to be destructed mutually.

11.Going out for checking on the roads or on the approaches.Security for commanders.Secret moving of capturing group.

12.Blanks of fire shooting, rules of objects defense. Usage of remote control mines.

13.Usage of heavy machine guns and mortars.

    14.Communication means work.

    15.Usage of guard dogs

    2. Training preparation course for the special security units

To have high level results it is necessary:- To have sufficient quantity of training pneumatic weapons, explosive packets, andsmoke boxes- To have Russian-English-Arabic interpreter - To have sufficient instructors (one instructor per 10-15 persons)

To have good results it is necessary:- To have small amount of training pneumatic weapons; possible without it- To have English-Arabic interpreter

Training pneumatic weapon cal. 4.5 mm or 6 mm is used to combine different combat battles and training course of C.Q.B (Close Quarter Battles) by personnel.

The methods of training were developed in our military club; we have been training andhave been using these methods for over 2 years.

The curriculum(training plan) designed for 18 days is below. According to this plan onehas 2 lessons every day or 4 lessons in a day (it's better).

Each lesson includes two parts. The first part - theory, then practice to achieve the results.

The first week 1)1. To check one person's documents

To check several persons' documents2. Frisking the suspect

    6/14

After examining the enemy from the back and sides, go away from the enemy and pointing your gun at him, you make him turn his chest up without quitting your gun (the position should be like a bridge), then frisk him from the front side.

Besides checking the standard places of weapon location, it is necessary to remember

about hidden places: forearm, between shoulder-blades, groin, inner/external parts of thighs, and also shank.

Remember: the more uncomfortable and unsteady is it the enemy's position the less is theability that he can counterattack.

3.to tie the suspicious upHow to tie the suspect. Binding is used to limit the resistance of prisoner, to convoy himand to transport. It is very simple to tie the suspect after pain affect or suffocation. It isnecessary to put the enemy on his stomach to the earth and block strongly one of his

hands by the hip of your leg.Going on pain affect on the hand, make the enemy put hissecond arm behind his back. Tie his hands using one of the methods.

4.to convoy the suspicious. How to convoy the suspect. In general convoying is carried out under the threat of rifle or after the pain action. Themain demand is not to give opportunity for prisoners to resist and the main demand is tosecure the persons, who are convoying the prisoners. Its good idea to tie up two or more

prisoners together not to give them the opportunity to act in a group and to convoy themin such position.

If have no guns you can convoy the prisoners using the knife controlling prisoner's groin by it.

2)1.Training of deblocking actions of your car not to be captured2.to check one person's documents(inside the vehicle)3.to check several persons' documents(inside the vehicle)Duration: 4 hours

1.Training of deblocking actions of your car not to be capturedThere some causes when criminals change their clothes into police/army ones and stop acar to take possession of it. If you have done a foolish thing and stopped you should actin such way:1.Pretending that you are taking documents/money by your right hand you shoot throughthe clothes at the first enemy standing near the window.2.You open the door, slip out of the car your back forward, shoot at the 2nd enemy who iscontrolling the left side of the car.3. Then you shoot under the bottom of the car at the feet of the enemies who are on theright side of the car.

  • 8/14/2019 Operative Plan of Work for Training Local Security Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan

    7/14

4.Then you roll and using the car as a shelter, open fire for effect at the next enemy.

2.to check one person's documents(inside the vehicle)to check several persons' documents(inside the vehicle)

The rules:1.Don't let them go out of car without command because:

    a. they can disperse and begin to fireb. in half-opened door they can roll out a grenadec. while the enemies are in a car - it is comfortable statistical

target2.Dispose your people not to cover your shooting sectors.3.Don't stand right before/behind a car - they can knock you down.4.The controller comes to the right side of the car (because for those

who are in it is difficult to shoot to the right).

5.The person who is securing you is in front on the side of the car and controls the leftside.6.Opening fire or falling/going away of the controller is the signal to open fireimmediately by securing person or group.

3)1.Blocking of object2.The tactical basis of building assault by small subunits. Police assault and Army assault, the difference between them.Duration: 2 hours

1.Blocking of objectBlocking of object is held to prevent a penetration and to leave the position by the enemyand to have the reserve of time for approaching our reinforcements.

Basic scheme:1.Dead zone - the most possible place for enemy to break into.2.shooting sector

2.The tactical basis of building assault by small subunits. The method that was used during the WW2 is used to approach to the building or other object, that must b captured. The idea of the method is : submachine gunners are movingalong the both sides of the street to the object, distance is 6-7 meters from each other, sprinting from shelter to shelter. During their advancement a machine-gunner(or machine-gunners) who is behind them, supports and cover the subunit by fire, firing for effect (if it's possible) but in general he opens defensive quick fire by short bursts at alltargets, at all places, where he can see delivering fire(attics, basement, windows,

  • 8/14/2019 Operative Plan of Work for Training Local Security Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan

    8/14

etc.).Grenade launcher/sniper works near a machine-gunner and destroys the reinforcedand dangerous firing means of enemy, machine-guns points and snipers, who deliver fireusually from the houses. When the subunit advanced forward for 60-70 meters, lay down or covered from fire

behind the shelter and opened the aimed fire, the cover group moved in - machine gunner

and grenade launcher. Submachine gunners deliver fire at targets at the opposite side of the street not forgetting the situation behind them.During the assault capture of an object (strong point of enemy) you should approach to itusing the firing support of cover group, who during the assault the assault opensdefensive rapid fire at firing points of enemy at the object that is attacked and at other firing points of enemy, who support their own soldiers from outside. You must break into the object at the moment when the doors have already been broken;the cover group is delivering intensive fire, and not giving the opportunity to the enemyto shoot at assault group using the aimed fire, after the grenade from grenade launcher flewThrough the broken doors inside. Immediately after that 1-2 hand grenades are thrown

through the doors into the house. Assault group break into immediately after theexplosion of their grenades. The first members who broke into the building (bendingdown and jerking) quickly go away from the entrance, open fire using long bursts at alldark

places using not aimed fire! The mission of the first soldiers entered into the building isto give opportunity to enter to the main forces of assault group, to clear the way for them

by fire, to cover them if necessary. Then, when they are reloading their rifles it will benecessary for them to stay there and then to move in the second arrangement.Police assault and Army assault, the difference between them.Police assault is the assault using light weapons, flash and gas grenades, it is designed tosave the life of hostages an to arrest the criminals.

Army assault is the assault using light, middle and heavy weapons, spending a lot of ammunition (grenades, cartridges), it is conducted without taking into consideration arethere any hostages or not, it is designed to destroy the enemy.

The second and the third week of training. The basis of C.Q.B. The assault of the building and clearing of the building.

1)1.Gesture training2.Tactical movement-turning round the corner -"snake" formation-rhombus formation-clearing T-type crossroad-movement upstairs/downstairs-doors3.The idea about systematic and dynamic penetration of the room.4.Clearing and entering the room with simple plan.

  • 8/14/2019 Operative Plan of Work for Training Local Security Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan

    9/14

    Duration: 6 hours

1.Gesture trainingAll the gestures are shown only by left hand, the right one is on the trigger, the barrel is

    pointed at the dangerous zone.

Commands to control the suspect:Stop!Hands up!Turn around!Kneel!Clutch your armson the head! Next you frisk the suspect in general (superficially), then frisk the suspect indetails in lying position.Voice communication is forbidden during training.

2.Tactical movementThe rules:1.The rifle is directed to the side you are looking at.2.Don't make any noise while moving.3.Don't go in the middle of the corridor, keep to the one of the walls

not touching it by your clothes.-turning round the corner The rules:The corner is rounded in maximum distance.

1.Method of round the corner with consistent increasing of field of vision.

2.Method of "quick glance" - the top of your body swing like a pendulum move forwardand quickly glance behind the corner and them quickly move backward, not dependingon results. If you know exactly, that the enemy is round the corner (you saw a shadow a toe of afootwear, smelled him) shoot him not exposing but only by putting forward your handwith gun.

    -"snake" formationThe rules:The 1st man keeps sector at 12 o'clock, the 2nd man - at 3 o'clock,the 3d at 9 o'clock, the 4th - at 6 o'clock. The most experienced mancomes the first.

    -rhombus formation

-clearing T-type crossroadCrosses of the corridors are cleaned by gradual increasing of field of vision, that islimited by one of the corner, with movement along another wall up to it's corner.

If you are alone consider T-crossings as these are two corners one opposite another.Check each corner separately, not crossing the nearest wall if corridor hasn't been

  • 8/14/2019 Operative Plan of Work for Training Local Security Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan

    10/14

checked. Advancing is held as diagonal advancing toward opposite corner. After you havecrossed the coaxial plane of door-way, quickly took round to persuade that thereare no enemies. If you are not lucky and you fond enemies behind you you must turnyourself around, kneel and fire from bottom to top.The most secure clearance can be done when there are two persons -both simultaneously

looking behind the corner in different levels, everybody cleans his side of corridor.

    -movement upstairs/downstairs

One should approach to the stairs as to the doorway or to the corner using the methodof field of vision. The way of movement is by side, your back to the wall (not touchingit).Your rifle is directed to the zones of potential danger.Avoid showing through interval

between flights of stairs. If you are two while one man is keeping the top landing, the second is dealing with nextflight of stairs and possible with corners of turns of the stairs. Then he began controllingthe next top landing but the 1st is going on upstairs and is clearing the next dangerous

zone.-doorsThe rules:1.Don't stand right in front of the door.2.The optimal balance of the width of vision is provided by the

position near the door from the side of the door handle.3.Opening the door wing step backward.4.Before entering the house using sector vision (the method of piecutting) check the room.Don't stand right in front of the door.5.If you suspect that it is mined, use the hang with rope or other means to open the door safely.

3.The idea about systematic and dinamic penetration of the room. The 1st man stand near his side of doorway, the 2nd man using the sector vision cross thedoorway and stand on the other side of it.The 3rd controls the corridor.

System entry slowly and quiet, the soldiers simultaneously look behind the corner (hang penetration) in different levels. Everybody cleans his side in the room.

Dynamic entry - quickly and noisy, the door is broken/blown up,1-2 grenades are thrown, during the burst of grenades, the soldiers break into the roomalong diagonal, firing by bursts at all suspicious places. The 3rd man controls the roomnot entering it.

Before leaving the room fire control bursts at wardrobes, beds.4.Clearing and entering the room with simple plan. read theory - doors, and also the typesof penetrations into the room.

  • 8/14/2019 Operative Plan of Work for Training Local Security Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan

    11/14

It is necessary to remember that standard places of enemy location in the room are thenearest left/right corners in the room, right behind the opened door.If you found out that there is enemy in the room, shoot at the dangerous place withoutexposing.2)

1.Clearing and entering the room with complicated plan.2.Quick simultaneous clearing of 2 parallel rooms when moving along the corridor.3.Evacuation of wounded.4.Withdrawal.Duration: 2 hours

1.Clearing and entering the room with complicated plan.1.After explosions of grenades, the 1st and the 2nd man assault the1st room, the 3rd and the 4th man cover them.2.Then, dynamically the 3rd and the 4th assault the 2nd room, the 1stand the 2nd man cover them.

2.Quick simultaneous clearing of 2 parallel rooms when moving along the corridor.1.Two group each consisting of 2 men (the 1st and the 2nd) move, everybody at his side of the corridor.2.Meeting the parallel rooms, the 1st numbers come to the nearest sideof doorway, controlling his sector. The 2nd numbers simultaneously andquickly using the method of sector vision, locate the position near the far doorway.3.Then simultaneously, by signal, they clean the room.

3.Evacuation of wounded.Basic scheme: The 1st is wounded, the 2nd, who is covering, steps over him and beginsfiring, at the same time the 3rd, who is protecting, takes the 1st under his hands anddraws behind the nearest shelter, behind the nearest corner. Having taken the wounded, the person who is protecting, cries "Backward!" and then the person who is covering

begins moving back, covering by fire those who are going away.

The rule is:If the partner is wounded, immediately begin to fire for effect.

4.Withdrawal.Withdrawal is done by "rollings".The locking man covers the group's withdrawal by fire.As soon as the soldiers who are going away reach the nearest shelter, they inform the

person who covers them. The locking man confirms the message and then moves to thenearest shelter, from where he can cover the withdrawal of the group, after it he informsthe others about it. This order is used up to destination of the point of evacuation.

3)1.The special features of the assault and special tactics of building clearing at night*.2.Tactically right usage of the torch during the night assault.

  • 8/14/2019 Operative Plan of Work for Training Local Security Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan

    12/14

Duration: 2 hours*Training is held at night.

1.The special features of the assault and special tactics of building clearing at night.

The rules:1.Before entering into the dark room, close one eye to adapt quickly to the dark.2.If possible use the torch or night vision.

2.Tactically right usage of the torch during the night assault. The torch is used for short time backlighting of the dangerous zone, after that it isnecessary to change the location. The barrel of the rifle should be directed with the light spot.Actions in a team:The 1st variant - the torch is used only by the 1st man, lightening for a short time thedangerous zones for the others, and if possible to do it behind the shelter.

The 2nd variant - everybody in the group uses the torches, flood-lightening everythingaround.

4)1.Assault training and tactics of typical buildings clearing in private sector(onestoreyed, two storeyed building located separately).

    Duration: 8 hours

5)1.Assault training and tactics of typical multi-storeyed building.

    Duration: 8 hours

    6)1.Test lesson to get qualification

    Duration: 2 hours

Total duration of the course : 36 hours

    P.S. About training pneumatic weapons.

To have high level results it is necessary to have sufficient quantity of training pneumaticweapons. As far as I know Iraq Security Forces use assault rifles of Kalashnikov (AK)and I think optimally for our training course should be used model Marui AK 47 6 mmair soft guns(length and weight is the same as in prototype weapon, it can fire by singleShot and in bursts, it can shoot by plastic 6 mm rounds, effective range of fire 50-70 m)http://www.airsoftclub.ru/weapons/m-ak47s.shtml
