Indian Maritime

India is the 20th largest maritime country in the world.

About 95% of the country’s trade by volume is moved through maritime transport.

The Indian peninsula, situated in the Indian Ocean, is also strategically located between the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the Pacific Ocean in the east and 12 major ports carrying 75% of port traffic and 148 operable minor and intermediate ports

Logistics and transportation Management

Time precedence-based MILP mathematical formulation To determine the assignment of cargos to ships and

define the optimal route that each ship should follow to maximize its profit.

The MILP-based model is then combined with an iterative algorithm in order to tackle large-scale problems involving a large numbers of ships, ports, and cargos.

Page 4: Operations research

The following notations are used in the proposed MILP-based formulation:

L (cargos); S (ships) P (ports) TTVs (total travel time for

ship s) tccs (time-charter cost per

unit time of ship s) LPp (cargos loaded in port

p) srl (revenue for cargo l) fcs (cost of fuel per unit

distance for ship s);

pcp,s (port cost for ship s at port p)

vmaxs (total carrying capacity of ship s in tonnes

TTDs (total distance travelled by ship s)

Xp,s (binary variable denoting that ship s visits port p).

Objective: To maximize Profit

Transportation Model

The following example can be used to demonstrate the formulation of the transportation model. Wheat is harvested in the Midwest and stored in grain elevators in

three different cities—Kansas City, Omaha, and Des Moines.

These grain elevators supply three flour mills, located in Chicago, St. Louis, and Cincinnati.

These costs are shown in the following table. For example, the cost of shipping one ton of wheat from the grain elevator at Omaha to the mill at Chicago is $7.

CASE-Capsize during loading

In US, while loading 3000gross tons, Ship capsized and sank alongside the dock

Observation – Error in calculating vessel’s stability and officer failed to make proper allowance while calculating vessel’s center of gravity

Root cause – Error in stability calculation
