Operation Smile has the ability to provide rapidly deployable urgent surgical services in response to a disaster or complex emergency. Due to the strength of our logistical and supply chain management, we can:

➢ Ship the medical goods needed to support disaster

response efforts around the world in the days following a

natural disaster or complex emergency;

Work closely with our corporate sponsors to obtain and

ship urgently needed medical goods; and

Coordinate the provision of supplies for relief efforts with

other organizations and include them in our shipments.

Humanitarian Assistance

Operation Smile rapidly dispatched more than 51,000 pounds of medical equipment, instruments, supplies and pharmaceuticals totaling more than $1 million to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. This included equipment sufficient to fully outfit two general-anesthesia operating tables, a post-anesthesia care unit, and pre- and post-operative wards, as well as supplies sufficient to care for hundreds of patients from an initial triage examination through surgery and post-operative care. In addition to donating significant supplies and commodities from our own warehouse, Operation Smile accepted goods from a number of other organizations and coordinated their shipment to Haiti.

Operation Smile sends more than $7.7 million of cargo shipments to support our surgical and medical educational programs around the world each year. We work closely with:

Haiti

In collaboration with our local affiliate office, Operation Smile India, Operation Smile provided surgical care and related services to over 1,000 patients and medical screening to countless others during a recent surgical program in Assam, India in 2010. To facilitate this surgical program, Operation Smile’s warehouse team packed and shipped sufficient medical goods for the Operation Smile team to run 32 separate operating tables for several weeks. In total, this was more than 13,000 pounds of cargo worth nearly $500,000 and included medical supplies such as surgical gowns and hypodermic needles, surgical equipment and instruments, anesthesia drugs and other pharmaceuticals.

India

In collaboration with our local affiliate office, Operation Smile Vietnam, Operation Smile has been providing medical care to the Vietnamese people for over 20 years. In November 2009, Operation Smile hosted 16 simultaneous surgical and dental programs across Vietnam. More than 7,000 Vietnamese patients received cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries, reconstructive surgery for burns and other facial deformities, or dental treatment. To support these programs taking place from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, our warehouse shipped nearly $1.4 million of equipment, instruments, supplies and pharmaceuticals weighing nearly 30,000 pounds. The shipment contained sufficient medical goods for the Operation Smile team to run 33 separate operating tables, 8 dental vans and 1 dental clinic for several weeks.

Vietnam

Operation Smile donated more than 17,000 pounds of supplies to rapid response teams helping victims in Banda Aceh, Indonesia following the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004. Supplies included anesthesia machines, surgical gloves, bandages, syringes and other essential commodities.

Surgical and Education Programs

Our corporate sponsors to ensure that the highest quality medical goods are donated to support our programming needs throughout the year;

Local governments to ensure that our shipments are being appropriately packed, shipped and documented.

Operation Smile has been conducting Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support Programs for local health professionals in developing countries for almost a decade. In partnership with the American Heart Association, we have trained volunteers around the world to recognize and treat emergencies, including cardiac arrest and respiratory failure. Operation Smile Ethiopia has worked with the Addis Ababa Health Bureau, the University of Jimma, and Black Lion Hospital to implement life support training programs for more than 400 healthcare professionals in Ethiopia. In conjunction with these trainings, and similar programs in more than 30 countries around the world, our warehouse team coordinates the import and export of more than $100,000 of training materials, equipment and supplies each year.
