USE AND MAINTENANCE ENGLISH

1. INTRODUCTION This User's instructions manual (hereinafter called Manual) provides the user with useful information to work properly and safely, making the use of the machine easier. The sections below must not be considered as a long and burdensome list of warnings: they must be regarded as a number of instructions that improve machine performance and prevent damage to persons, objects or animals originating from incorrect machine operation and use. It is essential that each operator in charge of transporting, installing, commissioning, operating, maintaining, repairing and dismantling the machine consults this manual and read it carefully before carrying out any operation. This will help him avoid incorrect manoeuvres and prevent inconveniences that may jeopardise the machine integrity and eventually result in risks for operators’ safety. If doubts or uncertainties still arise on the use of the machine after reading this manual, do not hesitate to contact the Manufacturer, who will be on hand to ensure prompt and accurate assistance for the better operation and maximum efficiency of the machine. Finally, we would like to point out that existing regulations on safety, hygiene at work and environmental protection must always be adhered to during all the phases of machine operation. The operator must therefore check that the machine be operated exclusively in optimised safety conditions for both persons and objects. This manual is to be considered as an integral part of the product. Therefore, along with the Declaration of Conformity, it must be stored in a safe place where it can be consulted during the entire machine life and passed on to the new owner. This manual was drawn up according to the regulations existing at the time when it was printed. The Manufacturer reserves the right to change the machine without having to promptly update this manual. In the event of disputes, the valid version is the Italian text. Some images in this manual show parts or accessories that may be different from those of your machine. Components or guards may have been removed to make images more useful.

IN GENERAL 1.1Conventional symbols: To identify and make different danger types recognisable, the following symbols are used in the manual:

In the text, symbols are accompanied by safety warning messages: these are short sentences to further exemplify the type of risk/danger. Warning texts guarantee the safety of operators and prevent damage to the machine or drill product. The drawings, pictures and diagrams in this manual are not scaled. They exemplify the information provided in the text and are an addition to it: they are not meant to illustrate the supplied machine in details. To give a more complete view of the machine, the drawings, photographers and diagrams, in most cases, are reproduced without the protections or guards installed. Finally, a few words on annexes. As they are photocopies of catalogues, drawings, etc., they have the original ID and page numbers (when provided with it). If they are not originally provided with a numbering, they are not given one. Definitions: Below is a list of definitions of the main terminology used in this Manual. The Manual should be read carefully prior to use. • OPERATOR The person/s charged with installing, starting up, adjusting, carrying out

maintenance, cleaning, repairing or transporting a machine. • DANGER ZONE: Any area inside a/o near a machine in which the presence of an exposed

person constitutes a risk for the safety and health of that person. • DANGER CONDITION: Any situation in which an operator is exposed to one or more Dangers.

Safety measures concerning the hydraulics 1) At the moment of connecting the hydraulic tubes to the hydraulic system of the tractor, make sure that the hydraulic systems of the operating machine and the tractor are not under pressure. 2) For the operative hydraulic connections between tractor and operating machine, the sockets and plugs should be marked with colours to distinguish them, to avoid them being used wrongly. There would be a danger of accident if the connections were to be swapped round. 3) The hydraulic system is under high pressure; because of the accident risk, when searching for leakage points special auxiliary instruments should be used. 4) Not to never carry out the search losses with the fingers or the hands. The liquids that exit from the holes can be nearly not visible. 5) During transport by road the hydraulic connections between tractor and operating machine should be disconnected and secured to the support provided. 6) Do not use vegetable oils under any circumstance. These could cause a risk of damage to the cylinder gaskets. 7) The operating pressures of the hydraulic system should be between 100 bars and 180 bars. 8) Never exceed the indicated hydraulic system pressure levels. 9) Check that the quick hook-ups are coupled correctly; parts of the system could get damaged if they are not. 10) Oil escaping at high pressure can cause skin injury with the risk of serious wounds and infection. In such cases seek immediate medical attention. If the oil with surgical means is not removed quickly, can take place serious allergies and/or infections. It follows that oleo-dynamic components should not under any circumstances be installed in the tractor cabin. All the component parts of the pressurised system should be carefully installed in order to avoid damage during the use of the machinery. 11) In case of participation on the hydraulic system, to unload the hydraulic pressure carrying all the hydraulic commandos in all the positions some times after to have extinguished the motor.

3. PLOUGH DESCRIPTION The plough is a tool built with the purpose of ploughing in green manure exposing its deepest parts to the weather. The models called UNICO-UNICO VARIO are mounted reversible in-furrow mouldboard ploughs. These were designed so that the angle of inclination of the bodies ensures an adequate overturning of the ground together with an optimal work space to free the crop residue: this combination of geometry allows an optimal overturning of the soil thanks to the appropriately shaped mouldboards. Each mouldboard of the plough is integral to its beam. Each beam is constructed with special steel capable of ensuring a high strength structure with a high degree of elasticity. Each working body is equipped with a mechanical safety by means of a shear bolt: if the ploughing element encounters obstacles (large rocks or stumps) when working, the calibration of the bolt ensures that the beam and the supporting structure is protected from damage. The UNICO NS-UNICO NS VARIO models are ploughs equipped with an autoreset system: if the ploughing element encounters obstacles (large rocks or stumps) when working, the autoreset system allows the plough to bypass the obstacle and reposition itself for ploughing.

The ploughs are agricultural attachments suitable only for the use indicated. The recommended working speed is 6÷8 km/h. The road transport the machine has to take place at a maximum speed of 25 km/h. Any use other than that described in these instructions can cause damage to the machine and constitute a serious danger to the user. The machine is intended for professional use and should only be used by instructed, trained and authorised personnel, and in possession of a regular driver's license. Operating instructions • The machine is intended for professional users: operation must be allowed to skilled operators only. • The machine must be operated by one operator only. • The machine is not intended for purposes other than farming applications. Conforming machine operation also includes: • compliance with all the instructions provided in this manual; • performance of inspection and maintenance operations described in this manual; • the exclusive use of original MASCHIO GASPARDO spare parts. The Customer must ensure that Qualified Operators for routine machine operation are suitably trained and prove competent in carrying out the tasks assigned to them, taking care of their safety and that of third parties. Depending on the qualification level and tasks assigned, qualified operators must be duly instructed on the machine functions so as to operate and manage it correctly and guarantee good machine efficiency. so as to operate and manage it correctly and guarantee good machine efficiency. Regular operation depends on the correct use and adequate maintenance of the equipment. It is advisable therefore to observe scrupulously what is described in order to prevent any inconveniences that could prejudicate proper operation and duration. It is just as important to keep to what is described in this booklet since the Manufacturer declines all responsibility due to negligence and non-observance of these rules. At any rate the Manufacturer is available to assure immediate and accurate technical assistance and all that may be necessary for the improved operation and better performance of the equipment. The machine user shall be liable for damage caused by non-compliance with the instructions hereby.

3.3 HANDLING

The Customer must apply the rules envisaged in the European Directives EEC 391/89 and 269/90 and subsequent modifications on the possible risks for loading and unloading operators caused by manual handling of loads. During handling operations wear suitable personal protection equipment:

If the machine needs to be handled, lift it by coupling it to the appropriate attachments using a hoist or crane of suitable capacity. (Fig. 6). Due to the danger, this operation must be performed by trained and responsible personnel. The mass of the machine is on the identification Plate (Fig. 1). Tension the cable to level the machine. The attachment points are identified by the presence of the "hook" symbol. Hook the machine at the points shown in the figure.

• Packaging materials (pallets, cartons, etc.) must be disposed of as prescribed by the existing regulations through authorised disposal companies. • Parts making up the machine must not be lifted by hooking them up from moving or weak parts such as guards, electrical runways, pneumatic parts, etc. • Standing under suspended loads is not allowed; unauthorised personnel are not allowed access to the work sites; it is mandatory to wear overalls, safety footwear, gloves and a hardhat.

4. RULES OF USE To obtain the best performance from the equipment, carefully follow what is set out below.

APPLICATION TO THE TRACTOR 4.1 The plough can be applied to any tractor equipped with three point universal coupling.

The application to the tractor is a very dangerous phase. Great caution must be used and the whole operation must be carried out following the instructions. Preliminary considerations

Make sure there are no objects placed on the plough or people and/or animals in the immediate vicinity of the plough especially when turning the mouldboards from right to left or vice versa.

4.2 ATTACHMENT OF THE PLOUGH TO THE TRACTOR To hook the plough to the tractor, proceed as follows:

1) Ensure that the plough is always in a stable and horizontal position and proceed approaching the plough towards the tractor: position the plough so that the center distance of the pins of the first and second point of the plough are in line with the center line of the tractor's lower arms;

2) Move the lifting bars of the tractor (1) to the mounting pylon where the pulling and lifting pins are located, then lift the couplings until the safety engages.

3) Connect the upper third point with the appropriate mechanical jack (or hydraulic) to the relative pin.

4) Connect the hydraulic system to the control unit of the tractor, making sure that the fasters (quick couplings) have been cleaned from impurities.

5) Then very carefully check that the whole system has been connected correctly by running a few practice manoeuvres.

6) Adjust the length of the tensioner of the third point so that point 2, in both ploughing and transport, is a little higher than point T (see image on the next page

Page 17: Operation Manual UNICO 2015-09 (F07021023) IT-ENG … · maschio gaspardo s.p.a. unico - unico vario . unico ns - unico vario ns . en - use and maintenance. en - use and maintenance.

7) The delimitation chains and stabilizers must be adjusted so as to guarantee a sufficient lateral mobility to the lower arms of

the tractor during work. WARNING! Some tractor brands have automatic side struts that need to be appropriately adjusted. If the tractor suddenly presented a lateral thrust or the plough works with a non-uniform width to the right and to the left, this could be caused by a side strut that has not been released. Therefore, check and if necessary readjust the locking device of the automatic side strut. For this, see the use instructions provided by the manufacturer of the tractor!

8) Close the parking foot again.

4.3 DETACHMENT OF THE PLOUGH TO THE TRACTOR

The release of the machine from the tractor is a very dangerous phase. Great caution must be used and the whole operation must be carried out following the instructions. It is important to operate on a horizontal surface for the correct detachment of the machine.

1) Open the parking foot.

2) Lower the machine slowly until it is completely resting on the floor.

3) Disconnect the hydraulic hoses from the distributors of the tractor and protect the quick couplings with the special caps.

4) Loosen and release the third point, then the first and second.

4.4 ATTACHMENT STABILITY DURING TRANSPORTATION The application of the plough to the tractor involves a different weight distribution on its axles: consequently ballast should ideally be applied on the front of the tractor so as to properly share the weight on the axles of the tractor. The condition of equilibrium can be restored by placing a sufficient number of ballasts on the front of the tractor so that the weights on the two tractor axles are distributed sufficiently evenly. To work in safety the instructions given in the highway code should be followed; these prescribe that at least 20% of the weight of the tractor alone should be borne by the front axle and that the weight on the arms of the hoist should not be more than 30% of the weight of the tractor itself. These factors are summarized in the following formulas: 1 2 0.2

The symbols have the following meaning (for reference see Fig. 12): M (Kg) Mass at full load on the lifting arm (weight + load, see chapter 1.3 Identification). T (Kg) Mass of tractor. Z (Kg) Total mass of ballast. i (m) tractor wheel base, or rather the horizontal distance between the axles of the tractor. d (m) Horizontal distance between the centre of gravity of the ballast and the front axle of the tractor. s1 (m) Horizontal distance between the lower attachment point of the operating machine and lower the rear axle of the tractor (operating machine resting on the ground). s2 (m) Horizontal distance between the center of gravity of the operating machine and the lower attachment point of the operating machine (operating machine resting on the ground).

The amount of ballast that should be applied according to the formula is the minimum required for circulation on the road. If for reasons of tractor performance or to improve the trim of the plough when working, this value must be increased, refer to the manual of the tractor to verify its limits. When the formula for calculating the ballast gives a negative result it will not be necessary to add any weight. In any case, as long as the limits of the tractor are respected, a suitable quantity of weights may be applied in order to ensure greater stability during travel. Check that the tractor tyres are suitable for the load. DIRECTIVES ON THE TRANSPORTATION OF THE PLOUGH The road transport of the plough requires special attention by the operator in order to safeguard their safety and the safety of others. Always make sure before taking to the road that there are no people or obstacles in the vicinity. Check the manoeuvrability of the tractor-plough unit (given the length that is created between the two machines during transport). Check the stability of the plough when in the field and on the road.

• The plough must be suitably positioned before facing road transportation. • It is of fundamental importance to bear in mind that the road holding, the steering and braking of the tractor are

significantly influenced by the inertia due to the coupling of the plough. • Pay particular attention on bends, since the centrifugal force caused by the plough decreases the road holding of the

tractor. • During road transport of the plough, maintain a moderate speed and as even as possible, accelerating and braking in a

very gentle and gradual manner. This greatly restricts the inertial forces exerted by the attachment that can create hazardous situations in the control of the tractor (skids and/or braking in poor safety conditions)

• For road circulation, the Highway Code in force in the country where the plough is in use must be followed.

4.5 ROAD TRANSPORT If it becomes necessary to transport the machine for a long distance, it can be loaded onto a railway wagon or a truck. For this purpose, consult «Technical Data» for weight and specific dimensions. The latter are very useful to check the possibility of driving along all types of roads. The machine is usually supplied free of packaging and positioned horizontally, therefore a lifting system must be adopted using cranes and cables, or chains, of adequate capacity, hooking it to the provided lifting points marked with the "hook" symbol.

Before proceeding to the hoisting operations, make sure that any mobile elements of the machine are blocked. Hoist the machine with extreme caution and transfer it slowly, without jerks or abrupt movements.

The operations of hoisting and transport can be very dangerous if not carried out with the maximum caution; persons not directly involved should be moved away. Clean, evacuate the area and delimit the transfer zone. Check the state, condition and suitability of the means at disposition. Do not touch suspended loads, keeping them at a safe distance. It must be further ascertained that the operational area is free of obstacles and that there is sufficient «escape space», meaning an area which is free and secure into which one could move rapidly in case a load should fall. The surface on which the machine is to be loaded must be horizontal in order to prevent possible shifting.

Once the machine is positioned on the vehicle, make sure that it remains blocked in its position. Fasten the machine on the platform of the vehicle by means of cables suitable for the mass which must be blocked (see «Technical Data» for the weight). The cables must be firmly fastened to the machine and pulled taut to the anchorage point on the platform. Once transport has been carried out and before freeing the machine from all its fastenings, make sure that its state and position are such as not to constitute danger. Remove the cables and proceed to unloading with the same means and methods used for loading. Transit and transporting on the public highways When driving on the public roads, fit on the rear reflector triangles, side lights and flashing beacon and always make sure that you comply with the Highway Code and any other applicable regulations. Make sure that the machine dimensions during transfer phases allow for safe transport when travelling in subways, along narrow roads, near electrical lines, etc.. The tractor used to transport the equipment, must respect the power indicated in the Technical Data table, and possibly redistribute the total weights by adding ballast to balance and stabilise the entire unit (previous page). The movement outside the work area must take place with the attachment in the transport position: - Where required, retract all moving parts inside the overall dimensions of the road and secure them with the appropriate safety devices (frames, row marker arms, row marker discs, etc.). - Any transport accessories must be equipped with adequate signs and guards.

During the road transport of the plough with reversible depth wheel, release the third point (1) from the plough.

5.2 WIDTH OF THE FRONT FURROW (UNICO,UNICO VARIO, UNICO NS, UNICO NS VARIO) The width of the front furrow is adjusted via the external threaded rod of the Optimal system so that it matches the working width of the bodies that follow (Fig. A), taking into account the following concepts:

• Front furrow too narrow=> lengthen the external threaded rod • Front furrow too wide => shorten the external threaded rod

The tractor/plough towing line is adjusted with the internal threaded rod. This adjustment allows to eliminate the lateral thrust and to optimize the arrangement of the traction points, thereby reducing skidding and fuel consumption.

6.2 UNICO HYDRAULIC SYSTEM WITH ALIGNMENT MEMORY The jack M1 operated by the tractor's remote allows the overturning: the hydraulic control unit of the tractor must have two connections. Operating the remote of the tractor allows the 180 degrees rotation of the frame allowing the turnwrest plough function to work with the left and right bodies.

OPERATING PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE (TURNWREST WITH MEMORY)

The valves should not be touched as they are supplied already regulated. In the rare case when the need arises, the regulations to be performed are: • REG. 1: if the alignment cylinder (B) returns back, tighten the adjustment screw. If the cylinder reaches the stop and overturning does not start, unscrew the screw. • REG. 2: if the valve of cylinder A is unable to perform the 90° rotation, screw the screw; if the rotation stops in the neutral position (90°), unscrew the screw. • REG. 3: if the alignment cylinder (B) starts before the cylinder A ends the stroke, screw the screw to increase the pressure.

The jack A operated by the tractor's remote allows the tilting of the plough from both sides. the hydraulic control unit of the tractor must have two connections. The jack B operated by the tractor's remote allows the pitch control of the plough. the hydraulic control unit of the tractor must have two connections. To vary the pitch of the plough act on the remote of the tractor that controls the jack. Close the valve to deactivate the alignment memory. In this way, when rotating the plough the alignment of the frame is deactivated. WARNING! The rotation of the plough with the memory excluded could cause collisions with the ground, damaging the machine. Use the maximum caution!!

6.4 AUTORESET HYDRAULIC SYSTEM The hydraulic system of the autoreset system is comprised of:

- A maximum pressure valve with pressure gauge to check the pressure of the autoreset system;

- An accumulator;

- Single effect jacks in a number equal to the number of working bodies

The hydraulic unit of the tractor must have at least two connectors in addition to that for the turnover jack and that for the variability system of the hydraulic bodies (if present).

The pressure of the autoreset system must be calibrated in a range from 90 to 150 bar: read the pressure value from the pressure gauge

7 MAINTENANCE

7.1 LUBRICATION The grease lubrication points are defined (as way of example) in the figure on page 25. When using the plough in harsh environments, the intervention times must be closer together. Recommended lubricants: For all grease points we recommend: GR MU EP 2 or equivalent.

7.2 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

AFTER THE FIRST 12 WORKING HOURS Each new plough must be controlled after the first 12 operating hours, taking care to check:

• The general condition of the machine. • After checking the wear of the tools that work the ground (plough shares, mouldboards, chisels, etc.), tighten the screws

that secure them. EVERY 24 WORKING HOURS

• Check for tightness of the screws of the tools working the ground. • Grease the pins and relative bushings that are repeatedly subjected to movement.

EVERY 100 WORKING HOURS 1) Check for tightness of the screws of the tools.

2) Grease the pins and bushings that are repeatedly subjected to movement.

3) Grease the supports containing bearings. If these operations are carried out with care when resuming work, the equipment will remain in peak condition. If dismantling the plough, follow the anti-pollution laws and dispose of used lubricants and various parts according to the current regulations.

SEASONAL STORAGE At the end of the season, or if a long period of plough downtime is foreseen, it is necessary to:

• Wash the plough from the residual earth. • Carefully check and replace any damaged or worn parts (especially chisels, plough shares. mouldboards). • Tighten all screws and bolts, especially those securing the beams and working bodies. • Thoroughly lubricate and replace any broken grease nipples • Protect exposed parts from rust

8. DEMOLITION AND DISPOSAL This operation is to be carried out by the customer. Before demolishing the machine, carefully check its physical condition, considering that there are no parts of the structure that could be subject to possible structural failure or breakage during demolition. The customer should operate in compliance with the environment protection laws in force in his/her country.

CAUTION The demolition operations of the machine should only be performed by trained personnel, equipped with appropriate personal protective equipment (safety shoes and gloves), and tools and auxiliary equipment. All the disassembly operations for demolition should be carried out with the machine stopped and detached from the tractor. Before demolishing the machine, you are advised to render harmless all the parts that may be a source of danger and therefore: - scrap the structure using specialized firms, - remove any electrical apparatus according to the laws in force, - recover oils and greases separately, to be disposed of by authorized companies, in compliance with the regulations of the country in which the machine is used. When the machine is demolished the CE mark should be destroyed together with this manual. Finally, note that the Manufacturer is always available for any assistance and spare parts.
