After the war, defeated Japan was so confused economically, socially, and spiri­ tually. In the midst of such terrible conditions, missionaries came to Japan. To my big surprise, a young single lady, Miss Frances Talley came alone. She said, "God called me to Japan, and He encouraged me through II Corinthians 12:9, which He has promised :to me." She was so calm and peaceful even in such a condition as that day of Japan. She said she was never homesick. She trusted all to God and believed the Japanese, I thought. When we Japanese saw her we were so impressed with her faith and the faith of her family who would permit her to come to the enemy country in or­ der to do God's will. I suppose the background of her youthful life in a Christian home of eleven members whose prayer was "Thy will be done," helped a lot in making her personality.

We couldn't think of her as a stranger, because when we bad contact with her we found that she had many Japanese good points in her character, as if she were a refined Japanese lady. God knew her character and He chose her to be a missionary to Japan. As she has such a character, Japanese people feel friendly and warm, and have a feeling of trust toward her. And people consulted freely with her about their problems, be­ cause they saw Christ's spirit and love in her. Some of her Bible class students have already dedicated their lives as preachers. Really, she is a profitable and suitable personal evangelist for Jap:i.nes~.

In evangelistic meetings and Bible classes, Miss Talley is not concerned about the number who attend as much as she is about the spiritual growth of those who come. She will teach earnestly even one or two people, a.nd wants them to grow sincerely and faith­ fully in Christ. Her way is not a grand style, but she keeps on patiently and sincerely, as piling one stone upon another. She seems to have no concern about flattering superior people in order to get honor upon herself, but gives sympathy upon people in affliction. She is a gentle and modest person, but she has a strong will to accomplish the thing in her heart to do.

II Corinthians 3:2;3 expresses my regard for her and her work here in Japan.
