Agenda1. WHAT IS OSS ?
2. ELEMENTS OF OSS
3. NEED FOR OSS
4. FUNCTIONS COVERED BY OSS
3
DEFINING OSS
Stands for OPERATION SUPPORT SYSTEM.
Set of systems connected together and to other
network element(like BSS, NSS etc.) of a TSP.
It is a separate centralized system which monitors
and controls the network.
If we take taxi analogy then:
• Taxi as TSP
• Engine as Network
• Dashboard as OSS
4
OSS is connected to network elements via
standardized interfaces like Ethernet etc.
OSS can be understood as combination of two entities
1.NMC(Network Mgmt. Center)
2.OMC(Operation & Maintenance center)
Both can be installed at same physical location or at
different sites.

Elements of OSS
There are 4 key elements of OSS
1.Processes : the sequence of events.
2.Data : the information that is acted upon.
3.Applications : the components that implement
processes to manage data.
4.Technology : how we implement the application.
7
NEED FOR OSSIn today’s multivendor and multiservice scenario
OSS works as mediator & provides real time end
to end overview and control of information
remotely.
Customer tools like ERP,CRM etc. it is also
possible to upgrade OSS as per changing
conditions and requirements.
Real time supervision to maintain QoS.
Billing and charging.
8
OSS touches the following aspects of telecom
network :
• Plan : by engineering team
• Build : work force mgmt., order mgmt., inventry
mgmt. etc.
• Operate : alarms, troubleshooting, fault mgmt.
• Optimize :performance mgmt. for exponentially
growing traffic

2. Fault Management
3. Performance Management
FUNCTIONS OF OSS
10
1. Configuration Management
Cell level planning and operation.
Planning Major future changes.
Implement new cells or other
parameters in network if needed.
We can take example of BTS equipment
management
11
BTS Equipment Management
Configuration, Reconfiguration, enabling &
disabling the complete or selected parts of
BTS .
BTS software loading, checking information
about stored package.
BTS hardware dimensioning and planning.
BTS alarm management.
12
2. Fault Management
Faults are reported by various types of
alarms:
Critical: Immediate action needed.
Major: action to be taken as soon as
possible.
Minor: observe the situation or take action
when there is time.
Warning: take action during routine
maintenance.
13
2. Performance Management
By data collection and processing .
By preparing statistical reports.
By maintaining KPI(Key Performance
Indicators) mandated by TRAI for best
QoS.
14
2. Some QoS Parameters
BTS down time report: it shows BTSs
accumulated downtime(<=2%as per TRAI)
BTS Sector report: it shows
1.Call set up success rate(>=95%as per
TRAI).
2.SDCCH congestion(<=1%as per TRAI).
3.TCH congestion(<=2%as per TRAI).
15
2. Some QoS Parameters
4. Call drop rate(<=2%as per TRAI).
MSC traffic report
PoI congestion(<=0.5%as per TRAI)
