caution: Under certain circumstances some machines may retract the boring bar after the Automatic Feed disengages while the power operator is continuing to run in the forward direction. Using the power operator to return the boring bar to the rear most position will cause internal damage to the machine.

CAUtIoN: Keeping cutters sharp assures maximum efficiency in cutting operations. When cutters are dull they not only make cutting more difficult, but place an additional strain on the tips which can cause tip breakage.Whennotinusekeepcuttersinawoodencontainer.NOTE: Be careful not to drop cutter and damage cutter tips. If necessary to set cutter on tips, place upon wood rather than brick, concrete or metal.CuttersusedwithCL-12Machinesaretungstencarbidetippedformakinglateralconnectionsthroughtappingvalves.Tungstencarbidetippedcuttersaredesignedforcuttingcastiron,cement-linedcastiron,ductileiron,cement-linedductileiron,asbestoscementreinforcedconcreteandsteelpipe.Acutterwhichhasbeenusedoncastironorsteelpipecanbeusedoncement-lined,asbestos-cementorreinforcedconcretepipewithoutresharpening.Acutterwhichhasbeenusedonabrasivematerialscannotbeusedonmetalpipewithoutresharpening.Allpilotdrillsarethreadedintothecutterhubwiththreadsizesarrangedtopreventwronguseofdrillsandcutters.Drillsareprovidedwithwrenchflatspermittingremovalofpilotwithoutremovingcutter.Allpilotdrillshavespringloadeddetentstoretaincouponcutbyshellcutter.Thesedetentsareremovableforcleaningorreplacement.Alwayscheckdetentsbeforeusingtobesuretheyareoperatingcorrectly.ShellcuttersforPVCandHDPEarealsoavailable.

packingBoringbarpackingonmachinesisa“V”orchevrontypepacking,whichisautomaticallyadjustedbyaspring.Thereisnotakeup.Whenpackingsleak,theyshouldbereplacedwithnewones.Packingsaregoodforwater,gas,orpetroleumproducts.ToreplaceBoringBarpacking,seeSpecialInstructionsonpage17.Packingleakagemaybedeterminedbyobservingtwosmalldrainholesinsidesofmachinebehindfrontflange.Theseventspreventpressurefromenteringintothegearcase.AlloilsealsinCL-12MachinesareO-ringseals,whicharenon-adjustable.Ifleakageoccurs,newO-ringsarerequired.
Cutting equipmentSharpencuttersanddrillpointsbytouchingthemupwithanoilstonebeforeeachcut.Frontedgeofcuttertipsshouldbelightlyhoned.Ifcuttersareverydullorshowexcessivewear,returntoMuellerCo.forreconditioning.
After UseDirtandexcessgreaseshouldbecleanedfrommachineafteruse.Boringbarshouldbegivenalightcoatofoiltopreventrust,andthisshouldbedonewithboringbarslightlyextended.Oiledbarwillpulllubricationintopackingsasbarisretracted.Cutters,drills,hubs,etc.shouldbelightlyoiledafterusetopreventrusting.
StorageWhennotisusetheCL-12Machineshouldbekeptinwoodenchestduringperiodofbeingtransportedtojobsorstored.

5. Attachproperdrillingequipmenttotheboringbar.a)Placethefrontliftingyokeoverthesquaredrivespindletopreventrotationofboringbarwhenattachingtools(e.).
1. Inspectcutterandpilotdrilltomakesurethattheyaresharp.Ifcutterisdullitshouldbesharpenedasdescribedinmaintenanceinstructions.Checkpilotdrilldetentsbeforeeachoperationtomakesuretheywillmovecompletelytothesubmergedposition.2. Boltpropersizeofadaptertofrontamachine(a.).Checktobesuremachinetoadaptergasketisingoodconditionandinplace.(Allgasketsshouldbeperiodicallyreplaced).
NOTE: On the rear case of the CL-12 Machine you’ll see 2 Knurled Knobs. One is marked Automatic Feed Set. This knob is used to set the amount of travel required for the automatic feed to complete the cut. See instruction 13.TheotherKnurledKnobistheAutomaticFeedEngagementKnobwhichisusedtoplacethemachineinautomaticfeed(Seeinstruction3).3. Openvalvecompletelyandmeasuretheexactsizeofopeningandsizeofcuttertomakesuretheentireopeningisclearandunobstructedandthecutterwillpassfreely.NOTE: Diameter of boring bar is 2” which will pass through 2” tapping valves but may not pass through other 2” valves.8. Retractboringbartoitsrearmostpositionbyrotatingfeedcrankhandlecounter-clockwise(J.).
9. Placethemachine(withadapteranddrillingequipmentassembled)indrillingposition.Forhorizontaluse,supporttheassemblybyblockingupunderthemachineandvalve.Forhandoperation,thedrivingspindleshouldbeontheleftsideofthemachinewhenfacingthemain.Forpoweroperation,thedrivingspindleshouldbeatarightangletothemain.Checktobesurethatadaptergasketisingoodconditionandinplace.
NOTE: If cutter hub is E-Z Release type (51/2“ size and larger), tighten allen head cap screws so that the backing ring is rigid with the cutter hub (g.). This must be done before shell cutter is attached to hub.
Lubricatecutterhubtreadswithcupgreaseandattachshellcutterthreadingitontohubhandtight(H.).Lubricatepilotdrillthreadedshankendandscrewitsecurelyintocutterhub.Wrenchflatsareprovidedonpilotdrill*(i.).Checkdetentsonpilotdrilltobesuretheyareoperatingcorrectly.
10. Closethediscinthevalveandpressuretestthesleeveandvalveassemblyperspecifications.11. Layascaleorrulealongsidethetappingsleeveandvalveandmeasurethemachineadaptertopipedistance(K.).Thisdistance,plusorminustheamountthepilotdrillextendsorisbehindthefaceofthemachineadapterflange(l.),istheapproximatedistancethepilotdrillshouldtraveltoreachthemain.

machine–Loosenthepivotthumbscrew.Thispermitsthepivotpintoberemovedsothatthefrontliftingyokemayberemoved.Attachratchethandletodrivespindleandsettheclockwise rotation.Alwaysoperatethemachineaccordingtoinstructionswithonemanonlyonratchetandusingautomaticfeedtoassurecorrectdrillingandtappingrate.Ifcutbecomestoodifficultforoneman,DONOTforcemachineasthismaydamagecutterormachine.Followoneofthemethodslistedininstruction23.HandoperatedCL-12Machineshouldhaveaboringbaradvanceofabout.015”perminute,ifoperatorcanmaintain5RPMoninputspindle.Thisratewouldrequireabout60minutestoadvanceoneinch.Smallercutspermithigherinputspeedandcuttingtimeswillbereducedaccordingly.

b)When power operating the Cl-12 machine with the mueller h-614 Air power operator or H-607 Hydraulic Power Operator –Loosenthepivotthumbscrew,thispermitsthepivotpintoberemovedsothatthefrontliftingyokemayberemovedandtheoperatormaybeattachedtotheholderpivotonthefrontgearcaseoftheCL-12Machine.Positiontheoperatorandreplacepivotpin.Tightenthepivotthumbscrewandlatchtheoperatorinpositionwiththeboltandwingnutlatchprovidedongearcasetopreventmovement.Openoperatorthrottlefully.ImpoRtANt: Maintain 90psi air pressure for the h-614 Air Power Operator and 1500psig for the H-607 Hydraulic Power operator. these pressures should be measured at the operator with a gauge.Whenpoweroperatingthe CL-12Machine,theboringbarinautomaticfeedshouldadvanceabout.187perminuteorrequire5+minutestoadvanceaninch.

1. RemovetheFourGlandCapScrewsfromtheBrassGland.2. InsettheGlandCapScrewsintothealternatetappedholesintheBrassGlandandscrewtheminalltheway.Thisshouldbedoneevenly,tighteningeachcapscrewalittleatatime.ThiswillcausetheGlandtomoveforwardevenlyoutoftheflangerecessuntiltheGlandSealisexposed.3. RotateCrankHandleclockwise andadvancetheBoringBarapproximately6or8inches.ThiswillusuallycausetheGland,PackingSpringPackingFollower,3PackingRingsandConcaveFollowertomoveforwardintoanexposedposition.4. RemovetheGlandfromtheBoringBar.5. PunchoutthetwoRollpinswhichretaintheentirepackingassembly, CAUtIoN: place the gland assembly in a vise to retain the Concave packing Follower before punching out the Rollpins. Since the packing is spring loaded, these parts will fly out when the pins are removed if they are not properly retained.6. RemoveConcaveFollower,3PackingRings,ConvexFollower,andPackingSpringfromtheglandandcleanthepackingcavity.7. RemovetheBoringBarWiperRingandtheGlandSealandreplace,ifnecessary.
8. ReplacePackingSpring,ConvexPackingFollower,3PackingRings,andConcavePackingFollowerintoGland.MakesuretheRollpinholesintheConcavePackingFolloweralignwiththeholesintheGlandduringthisassembly.NOTE: Make sure the new packing rings are installed with concave end of packing facing the pressure or front end of the machine.9. RetaintheassembledglandinavisewhileinsertingthetwoRollpinsintheglandtoretainConcavePackingFollower.
10. Removeany“burrs”or“nicks”fromtheBoringBarDriveLugs.Lubricatetheboringbarandtheinsideofthepackingringswithalightfilmofoil.11. RemovetheFourGlandCapScrewsfromthetappedholesinthegland.12. CarefullyslidetheGlandAssemblyontothelubricatedBoringBarandslideintoplace.InserttheGlandCapScrewsthroughthedrilledholesandtightenGlandCapScrewssecurely.

RotatetheAutomaticFeedSetKnobcounter-clockwiseandpulloutonittoplacethemachineinAutomaticFeed.Iftheshaftfailstostayout,rotatetheknobsomemoreandpulloutagain.8. RotatetheCrankHandleclockwiseuntiltheAutomaticFeedShaftmovesforward.ThiswillbethezeropointoftheAutomaticFeed.9. TightentheSetScrewinCouplingIndicatorSleeveagainsttheshaftoftheAutomaticFeedTravelIndicator.10. SetAutomaticFeedTravelIndicatorforsomeamountabove005(fivetenthsadvancein
AutomaticFeedisusuallytheminimumsettingandrotatecrankhandleclockwiseuntilautomaticfeeddisengages.)11. IfAutomaticFeedTravelIndicatordoesnotreadexactly000afterdisengaging,resetitto000asfollows:a)PulltheKnurledCouplerMovableCollartowardtherearofmachine(Thiscollarwillmoveapproximately1/8”).
b)HolditinthispositionuntiltheKnurledCouplingIndicatorSleeveisturnedtherequiredamounttoobtainthe000settingontheAutomaticFeedTravelIndicator.
c)ThenreleasetheKnurledCouplerMovableCollarsothatthedrivepininitengagesthenearestholeintheCouplingIndicatorSleeve.
12. ReplaceBrassIndicatorCover.
