OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR COOLANT AND CIRCULATING PUMPS
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR COOLANT AND CIRCULATING PUMPS
GENERAL Because of the great diversity of services encountered
the Cameron Line of Coolant and Circulating Pumps, consists of several types and models, all of which are shown on the following pages.
For the purpose of simplifying the classification of the complete line, the following grouping is, therefore, made in accordance with those mounting features which are most apparent:
Immersion Type— Unit mounted vertically in tank by either a flange or brackets. Casing completely covered by liquid.
3% KRV — Models A-B -D 1 KRV " A-B 1 KORVN — " A-B
• KORVN — " A
Sidewall Type Without Seal—Mounted on the side of a tank with suction open to tank. Motor mounted on vertical zone-like supporting piece approximately one foot high.
YIKRV—Model C 1 KRV— " C-D
Sidewall Type With Seal—Mounted on the side of a tank with suction open to tank. Motor mounted on a short vertical supporting piece. 11% KRV—Models A-B-C
(The 13/i KRV Model B superseded the Model A in May 1941 and has an improved type of seal.)
Horizontal Conventional Type—These pumps may be mounted in any position, providing the motor is not be-low the pump. The suction is piped to the source. Motor has mounting feet.
KRV—Model D
INSTALLATION In general these pumps must be placed in locations
where temperatures are not so excessive as to be detri-mental to the operation of the motors which are rated at 40°C ambient. Care must be taken to provide adequate space for maintenance as well as to obviate all possibility of heavy objects bumping or falling on the unit.
As these pumps are all of the centrifugal type, it is necessary that certain requirements in regard to liquid level be adhered to when installing each particular unit.
It will be noted that the immersed type of pump has vent holes both in the lower and upper position of the column. The liquid level for this type must be somewhere between one inch above the lower vent to one inch below the upper vent.
The sidewall mounted unit without seal has a vent in the upper portion of the supporting column and the liquid should never rise to a level beyond one inch below this hole. The lower liquid level must be maintained at least 53i inches above the lower edge of the mounting flange.
The sidewall mounted unit with seal can have any maximum liquid level up to fifty feet. The minimum level must be maintained at least four inches above the lower edge of the mounting flange for models A & B and two inches for the model "C".
The horizontal pump can also have any maximum liquid level up to fifty feet. The minimum level must be five inches above the pump centerline. This unit can also be arranged for suction lift, but provision must be made for priming the pump before starting.
OPERATION A new pump or one that has been shut down for a long
period should always be checked for freedom of rotation before starting. This can be done by inserting a screw driver or similar object in the suction opening and rotating the impeller thru at least one revolution.
Electrical connections should be made as shown in the motor instruction tag attached to each unit.
Rotation should then be checked by observation through the relief holes next to the motor flange. Rotation should be as shown by the arrow on the nameplate. In the event that rotation is incorrect, refer to the motor instruction tag.
Lubrication of new units is not necessary before starting. For proper maintenance of lubrication refer to the motor instruction card.
A short period of time is necessary for running in the seals on those pumps equipped with this feature. The seal may leak slightly when the unit is first started, but this should stop after a few hours operation.
Standard coolant pumps are sold only for solutions having chemically neutral characteristics. The use of these units with acids or alkalis will result in rapid corrosion.
MAINTENANCE General . . . Periodically, depending upon service con-
ditions, the pump casing, impeller, and seal assembly (where furnished) should be inspected and if necessary any foreign matter should be removed. If excessive vibration or heating is experienced, inspect the pump impeller. A clogged im-peller may cause both. When assembling a pump after repairs have been made it is important that all fits be clean and free from burrs; otherwise misalignment will take place, further damaging the unit.
Motor bearings should be covered when the motor is dismantled to prevent dirt from getting in and causing premature wear.
When pumps are shut down for long periods of time, all liquid should be drained from the casing to avoid the possibility of corrosion.
Mechanical Seals . . . In those units having mechanical seals, wear is to be expected over a period of time, de-pending on the cleanliness of the liquid. Seal type pumps are not recommended for handling excessive amounts of abrasive material. If replacements are necessary, it is suggested that the entire seal assembly including the stationary seal face and gasket be replaced
In installing a new seal, care should be taken to properly align the driving ears of the carbon washer in the slots of the impeller hub. The synthetic rubber diaphragm can be readily slipped in the impeller hub after applying a light film of oil or grease, but should be forced on only far enough to allow the insertion of the retaining wire. Make sure the rubber diaphragm contacts the carbon evenly around the entire edge.
Troubles . . . If any of the following are encountered, they may be due to the causes listed below:
A.—No liquid delivered
1. Supply tank empty or level too low. 2. Speed too low. Check electric voltage or frequency. 3. Impeller or discharge line plugged.
4. Incorrect rotation. 5. Air leak in suction (Horizontal Type with suction
Lift).
B.—Not enough liquid delivered 1. Speed too low. Check voltage or frequency. 2. Impeller or discharge line partially plugged. 3. Total head too high. 4. Impeller damaged.
C.—Not enough pressure 1. Speed too low. 2. Impeller damaged. 3. Suction leak (Horizontal pump with suction lift).
D.—Motor runs hot 1. Pump taking too much power
a. Speed too high. b. Head lower than rating. c. Liquid more viscous than rating. d. Pump defects
1. Rotor binding. 2. Excessive seal tension.
2. Electrical Defects a. Voltage & frequency lower than rating. b. Defects in motor.

The Ingersoll-Rand Coolant Pump is backed
77 years of pump-building experience. The sam
engineering talent that has developed many suc-
cessful small circulating pumps, as well as larger
high-pressure and special centrifugal pumps, is
responsible for the design of these machines.
This view shows the impeller mounted on the shalt, the casing head, column, special bracket and a completely assembled pump equipped with mounting bracket.
• Simplicity of Design
Reliable and trouble-free operation is as-
sured by the small number of parts and the
sturdy, compact design of the unit. The im-
peller being always submerged, no stuffing
box is required.
• Handles Chips and Grit Because of the absence of metal to metal
contacts, and because the bearings are not
exposed to the liquid being pumped, there
is little wear or friction. A wide variety of
coolant liquids can be pumped even though
they contain grit and small chips.
• Positive Priming Since the impeller is submerged
in the liquid, the unit is always
primed and ready to pump.
• Long Life The sturdy construction, the use
of proper clearances and other out-
standing features of design result
in long, trouble-free service.
Applications The Class KRV Pump is designed for use with modern
machine tools. It can be depended upon to furnish an
ample supply of coolant liquid needed for the higher ,
speeds and harder materials.
The individual motor provides an independent drive
which is usually preferable to belt drive.
Many different kinds of coolant liquids can be handled
with the KRV Pump. Units can be furnished with a special
bracket for tank mounting. An opening in the bracket
provides an outlet for the pump discharge.
These pumps can be applied to many different types of
machines—drills, lathes, cutting-off machines, automatics,
boring mills, broachers, milling machines, grinders, thread-
ing machines, etc.
Sizes and Ratings
The Standard KRV Pump has a discharge tapped for 3/4 inches. The motor can be furnished for all special current
conditions, as well as for standard 110, 220 and 440-volt
direct or alternating current.
The capacities range from 5 to 20 gallons per minute
for pressures of 4 to 6.5 lbs. per sq. inch, depending on
the liquid handled.
(reCoolant pumps for handling larger quantities and hig r
pressures are described on the opposite page.
A special tank cover simpli-
fies the mounting. All types of
motors can be furnished. They
are built to handle up to 125
gpm. for pressures as high as 50
lbs. per sq. inch.
Individual Motor Drive
An internationally known
make of motor provides an in-
dependent and economical
means of driving the pump. The
compact design makes the unit
adaptable to many different
types of machine tools.
Casing The casing is fastened by
means of screws and can be re-
moved for inspection of the
interior parts.
End Suction The suction entrance opens
directly into the eye of the im-
peller, resulting in high effic-
iency. The pump is always
primed and ready to operate.
Sturdy Column
This sturdy column protects
the shaft and prevents dirt from
entering the coolant tank. The
lower end of the column forms
the rear head of the pump cas-
ing.
Stainless-Steel Shaft
A stainless-steel shaft of am-
ple size mounted in large bear-
ings provides direct drive from
the motor. The same shaft sup-
ports the pump impeller and
motor rotor. No coupling is
used.
Impeller The impeller is cast in one
piece and is both mechanically
and hydraulically balanced. It
can be furnished in bronze or
iron.
Other Popular Coolant Pumps
Sizes 1 and 1% KRVF pumps These coolant pumps are specially designed for use
as integral pumping units with machine tools. KRVF
Pumps are principally used on automatics and similar
machines that require either a large quantity of coolant
or coolant at an unusually high pressure.
The Motorpump For numerous applications on individual units or
batteries of machine tools the Motorpump is the most
efficient and economical pumping unit.
These pumps are known as the No. 1RVF and 1 1/2-
RVF, having 1" and 1 1/2" discharges respectively.
They are built with motors from 1/4 to 5 hp. and handle
up to 125 gpm. for pressures as high as 50 lbs. per sq.
inch.
The single shaft is supported by two sets of ball
bearings and a separate shaft sleeve protects the shaft
where it passes through the stuffing box. Motorpumps
operate equally well in any position.

The Cam-Pump The CAM-Pump is a rotary pump of the positive dis-
placement type for handling oils of widelyvarying viscosi-ties. The construction is compact and sturdy and it makes
an ideal pumping unit for many types of machine tool ap-
plications.
Two cam-shaped rotors in the pumping chamber pro-
vide a non-pulsating flow of liquid. There are no metal to
metal contacts. The pump is self-priming.
A wide range of sizes is available with standard motors
for many conditions of flow and pressure. Units can be
furnished with built-in motor (as shown) or drive from a
separate motor.
