1.1 Warning!Aldecanacceptnoliabilitywhatsoeverfordamageorinjuryresultingfromfailuretoobservetheseinstructions.

1.2 Specified UseTheseinstructionsareapprovedfortheAlde3020CompactHEfittedincaravans,motorhomesorbuildingsinaccordancewithCE0402no.SC0653-13,andhavetheE5markforinstallationinvehiclesinaccordancewithECER122,no.00001andR10,no.04166,foruseincentralheatingandhotwatersystems.

Thesystemisnotintendedforusebypersons(includingchildren)withreducedphysical,sensoryormentalcapabilities,orlackofexperienceand/orknowledge,unlesstheyhavebeengiveninstructionoraresupervised.

Theterm“specifieduse”alsocoversobservanceoftheoperating,andinstallationandserviceinstructions(suppliedseparately).

TheAlde3020CompactHEmustbeinstalledorrepairedbyacompetentpersoninaccordancewithcurrentlocalregulations.

Intheunlikelyeventthatyoursystemdevelopsafault,switchoffthesystemandcontactAlde,oryourdealerorinstaller.The owner is always responsible for maintenance and arranging inspection.

1.3 System DesignTheboiler’sinternalheatexchangerconsistsofthreeconcentriccylinders;thecombustionchamber,thecentralheatingcylinderandthehotwatercylinder.

Thecombustionchamberismadefromaluminium,andisdividedintotwohalvesbyabaffleplate,withtheburnerheadlocatedinthetophalf,andthefluegasesventingthroughthebottomhalf.

Thecombustionassemblyisfixedtotheendoftheinternalheatexchanger.Itconsistsoftheburner,combustionfan,gasvalve,airintakeandexhaustducts,andgasline.

Twoelectricheatingelementsaresealedinsidethecentralheatingcylinder,onefor1kW,onefor2kW.

TheroomthermostatisintegratedintothetouchscreencontrolpanelandconnectedtotheboilerbyaRegisteredJack(RJ)cable.

2. DESCriPTiON OF FUNCTiONS

2.1 Gas Heating

Whengasheatingissettoon,thecombustionfanstartstorevolve.Oncethecorrectspeedisachieved(inrpm),asignalissenttothePCBfortheburnertobelit.Thegasvalveopens,passinggas,andtheignitionmoduleonthePCBgeneratessparksattheelectrodeontheburnerhead.

Whentheburnerignites,aflamesupervisiondevicesignalstheignitionmoduletoceasesparking.Theburnerfiresuntiltheboilerorroomthermostatreachthesetpoint.

Shouldtheburnerflameoutunexpectedly,theFSDdetectsthisandattemptstoreignite(forabout10seconds),beforeshuttingdownandraisingafaultcode.

2.2 Electric Heating

Whenelectricheatingissetto1,2or3kW,relaysonthePCBtrip,feedingthe230Vsupplytotheelectricheatingelements.Thesearecontrolledbythesameprogrammeasthegasheating.

2.3 Domestic Hot Water

Thecombi-typeboilerautomaticallyproduceshotwater.Heatisemittedfromthecentralheatingcylinderintothehotwatercylinder.Ifthehotwatercylinderisempty,theairisheatedbutnodamagecanresult.

TiP!Listencarefullytotheignitionsequenceoftheboiler.Youshouldhearthewhirlofthecombustionfan,theclunkofthegasvalveandthetick-tickoftheignitionmodule.

TiP!Inagoodsummer,forexample,lowerthedesiredtemperatureonthecontrolpaneltoaround10°C.Thecentralheatingwillnotcirculate(unlessthetemperaturedropsto10°C),butyouwillstillhavehotwater.

Theboilermustnotbeswitchedonifthereisnoheattransferfluid(HTF)inthesystem.

Alwaysdraindownthefreshwatersystemifthereisriskoffrost;inwinter,forexample.Youmaycontinuetousetheboilerwithnofreshwaterinthesystem,asrequired;nodamagecanresult.

AlwaysreplacetheHTFinaccordancewiththeantifreezeproduct’slifespan.Ifinanydoubt,replacetheHTFafter2years.

Onlysterilisethefreshwatersystemwithaproductsuitableforstainlesssteel.

Donotplacestowageintheboilercompartment.

Donotpositionawnings,tentsorotherenclosuresaroundtheflueterminal.

Donotobstructtheflue.Becarefulnottofloodthefluewhenwashingthevehicle.

Thegasheatingmustnotbeusedwhenrefuellingthevehicleattheservicestationorotherfuellingfacility.

3. DOmESTiC HOT WaTEr

Beingacombi-typeboiler,theAlde3020CompactHEhasanintegrated,stainlesssteelhotwatercylinderthatholdsapproximately8.4litresoffreshwater.

Theboilercanproducearound12litresof40°Cwarmwaterper30mins(atacoldwatertemperatureof10°C).Ifonlytheelectricheatingisused,thiscapacityisslightlyreduced.

Onlyusepotablefreshwater.Greywater,desalinatedwater,orwaterotherwiseunfittodrinkisnotsuitableforuseasdomestichotwater.

Alwaysflushoutthehotwatercylinderbeforeuse,especiallywhenithasstoodemptyforsometime.

Targethotwatertemperatureisgreaterthan50°Cinnormaloperation,topreventthegrowthofLegionella.Over50°C,thehotwaterwillbeheatedtothemaximumachievabletemperatureatthetime.Thisallowsthehotwatertoachievedisinfectiontemperatures,andincreaseswarmwaterperformance.

Ifscaldinghotwatertemperaturesareaconcern–suchaswiththeyoung,elderlyorinfirm–thermostaticmixingvalves(TMVs)canbefitted,andmayberequiredbylocalregulations.

Avoidsteriliserproductscontainingsodiumhyperchlorite,forexample,asthesewillcauseseverecorrosiondamagetothehotwatercylinder,andisnotcoveredunderwarranty.Readtheproductlabelorcontacttheproductmanufacturerfordetails.

Whenthehotwatercylinderisincontinuoususe,itshouldbedrainedandrefilledonceamonth.Thisrecreatestheaircushioninthehotwatercylinderthatabsorbspressuresurges.

imPOrTaNT!Anysteriliserproductsshouldbesuitableforusewithstainlesssteel.

imPOrTaNT!Alwaysdraindownandcompletelyemptythehotwatercylinderwhenthereisriskoffrost,unlessthevehicleisexplicitlystatedtobeself-winterisingbythevehiclemanufacturer.

TiP!Ifcontinuouslyusingthehotwatercylinderinahardwaterarea,fitaninlinescaleinhibitortominimisetheeffectsoflimescale.

3.1 Draining Fresh Water

1. Switchoffthewaterpump.2. Openallwatertaps,showers,etc.3. Openthesafety/drainvalvebyliftingthe

yellowtab(Fig1[M]),orbyturningtheblueknob(Fig1[K])90°.

4. Thesystemwilldraindirectlybelowthevehiclethroughtheclearplastichoseonthesafety/drainvalve.Checkthatallwaterhasemptiedout(7–10litres).Leavethevalveintheopenpositionuntilthenexttimethehotwatercylinderisused.

NB:Checkthattheredbreathervalve(Fig1[N])isallowingairtoenterthehotwatercylinder,whenitisbeingdrained,andthattheclearplastichoseisnotobstructed.

4. HEaT TraNSFEr FLUiD

Thecentralheatingsystemmustbefilledwithheattransferfluid(HTF);asolutionof50%ethyleneglycolantifreezeandwater.

Theantifreezemanufacturerwillhaveamaximumwaterhardnessrecommendation.Readtheproductlabelorcontacttheproductmanufacturerfordetails.

50:50ethyleneglycolantifreezeandwaterwillprotectagainstfrostdownto -35–-37°C.Arefractometerand/orhydrometercanbeusedtomeasurethestrengthoftheantifreezesolution.

Corrosionprotectionwillvarydependingonthelifespanoftheantifreeze.Readtheproductlabelorcontacttheproductmanufacturerfordetails.

Thecorrosioninhibitorsfoundinethyleneglycolantifreezemaynotbecross-compatible.WhentoppinguporreplacingtheHTF,ensurethenewantifreezeiscompatiblewiththecurrentantifreezeproduct.Readtheproductlabelorcontacttheproductmanufacturerfordetails.

FailuretofillwithsuitableHTFmayresultinseveredamagetoyourAldesystem,andisnotcoveredunderwarranty.

imPOrTaNT!TheboilermustnotbeswitchedonifthereisnoHTFinthesystem.

imPOrTaNT!AlwaysreplacetheHTFinaccordancewiththeantifreezeproduct’slifespan.Ifinanydoubt,replacetheHTFafter2years.

TiP!Asaroughguideline,blueandredantifreezeproductsareNOTcompatiblewitheachother,butVAGG12++andG13specantifreeze(magenta)iscompatiblewithboth.

TiP!Theeasyway.ContactanAlde-certifiedserviceagenttodrainandrefillyoursystem.

4.1 Filling

ThecentralheatingsystemisfilledwithHTFthroughtheexpansiontank,eitherbyhand,orusingtheAldeservicepump.AnycontainersusedforhandlingorstoringtheHTFshouldbecheckedfirst,andmustbevisiblycleantoavoidintroducingcontaminantsorforeignobjectsintothesystem.

AlderecommendsusingtheAlde1900-811or839twin-motorservicepumptofillthesystem.

Tofillthesystembyhand,unscrewtheexpansiontankcap(Fig2[R]),andliftthecirculationpump(Fig2[S])outofthetank(ifapplicable).CarefullypourtheHTFintothetank,andrepeatuntilthefluidlevelisabout1cmabovetheMINmarkwhencold.

4.2 Draining

TheinstallershouldfitoneormoredrainsinthecentralheatingsystemtoallowdrainingoftheHTF.

Becausethepipesstepupanddown,someHTFwillbeleftinthesystemafterdraining.

5. CENTraL HEaTiNG

Theboilerissettoanupperlimittemperatureof85°C,i.e.thetemperatureoftheheattransferfluid(HTF)asitcirculatesaroundthepipes,radiators,convectors,etal.

Toensurethebestperformancefromhydronicheating,airmustbeabletocirculatefreelyaroundthebackofthefurniture(Fig3).Airvents,cutintothetopandbottomofthefurnituremustbeunobstructedbycarpets,cushions,orstowage,etc.

Thefulllengthofaconvectorshouldbeventilatedforbestperformance.

• 12Vexpansiontankcirculationpump.Thisclassicpumpisideallysuitedfortraditionalholiday-makers,orasalighterduty,off-gridoptionforthe230Vinlinecirculationpump.

• 12Vinlinecirculationpump.Thisheavyduty,variablespeedpumpisdesignedforfull-timemotorcamping.

• 230Vinlinecirculationpump.Thisheavydutypumpispowereddirectlybymainselectric,suitableforseasonalpitches.

TiP!Usegasandelectricheatingsimultaneouslyforthebestperformance.Theboilerwillonlyuseasmuchenergyasisneeded,andis93%efficientonaSEDBUKbasedtest.

5.1 Circulation Pump

ApumpisusedtocirculatetheHTFaroundthecentralheatingsystem.TherearethreemodelsofAldecirculationpump.

TiP!Contactthedealerorinstallerfordetailsonwherethebleedpointsareinyoursystem,andhowtoaccessthem.

5.2 Bleeding Air

TheHTFwillcontainsomeair.Thisisunavoidable.Airbubblescanalsobeintroducedwhenthesysteminfilled.

Inanewly-filledcentralheatingsystem,youwillneedtobleedairfromthebleedpointstoensurebestperformance.Thereisanautomaticairbleedvalveontheboiler.Thereisalsoanairventontheexpansiontank.

Theinstallershouldfitbleedpointselsewhereinthesystem,especiallywherethepipesstepupanddown,andonradiatorsandtowelrails.Airwillaccumulateatthesehighpointsandbecometrapped.

Tobleedthesystem,setthedesiredtemperatureto30°Candselectgasheatingonthecontrolpanel.

Setthe12Vinlinecirculationpumponthesideoftheboilertospeed5(Fig1[D]),byturningthebluespeeddialclockwise,onthefaceofthepumpmotor.NB:Speedisnotadjustableifusingthe12Vcirculationpumpfittedintheexpansiontank.

After10mins,setthepumpbacktoitsnormalrunningspeed(2foracaravan,3foramotorhome).

Moveontothenextbleedpointandrepeat,untilallbleedpointshavebeentendedto.

NowpowerofftheAlde3020CompactHEboilercompletely,makingsurethatthecirculationpumpisnotactive.

Followtheflowpipefromtheboiler,andbleedthesystemateachbleedpoint.

IfAldebleedpointshavebeenfitted,thesearemetalbleedscrewsmountedonblackEPDMrubberconnectors(Fig4).Haveaclothinhand.Toopen,turnthescrewanticlockwisebetweenthumbandforefinger.Airwillhissout.Whenfluidtricklesout,closethebleedscrewandmopupfluidwiththecloth.

5.3 air Lock

Ifenoughtrappedairaccumulatesatonepoint,anairlockcanresultandpreventthecirculationofhydronicheating.

Aramporsteepslopecanbeusedtoraiseoneendofthevehicle,causingthetrappedairtoshiftaroundthesystem.Repeatthefull

5.5 Liquefied Petroleum Gas

LPG(liquefiedpetroleumgas)hastwomainvariants,propaneandbutanegas.ThegasheatinginyourAlde3020Compactboilercanusepropaneorbutanegasasfuel.ManyLPGfuelscontainamixtureofpropane,butaneandotheradditives.

BS5482Part1states,“For butane cylinders, satisfactory service might not be obtained at temperatures of less than 10 °C; the most suitable temperature range is from 13 to 30 °C. For temperatures less than 13 °C, the use of propane should be considered.”

Forthisreason,Alderecommendsusingpropanegasforallyearroundgasheating.

LPGcylinderscontainbothgasandliquidforms.Whenthecylinderisfilled,highpressuretransformsthegasintoliquid.Theliquidrevertstogaswhenthevalveonthecylinderisopened.

LPGisaflammablegas.Itcanbeafireandexplosionhazardifstoredorusedincorrectly.Storecylindersverticallyandsecurely,topreventthemfromtoppling.

DonotmountyourLPGcylinderhorizontallyoruseliquidphasegascylinders.Liquid–gasexplosionmayresult.Readtheproductlabelorcontactproductmanufacturerfordetails.

LPGisheavierthanair.Shouldagasleakoccur,floorventsinacaravanormotorhomeshouldallowthegastoescapefromthevehicle.Forthisreason,alwaysensurefloorventsareunobstructed.

imPOrTaNT!Theboilercompartmentcontainsthegasconnection,floorventsandthefluehoses.Donotplacestowageintheboilercompartment.

Intheeventofagasleak,orifyousmellgas:

• Extinguishallnakedflames• Openalldoorsandwindows• Closeallgasvalves,includingthevalveon

thecylinder.• Donotsmoke.• Donotoperateanyelectricalappliancesor

switches.• Arrangeforimmediateinspectionofthe

gassystembyacompetentpersoninaccordancewithcurrentlocalregulations.

LPGfromthecylinderisreducedinpressurebyaregulator,andissuppliedtotheboileratlowpressure(30mbar).Neveruseanunregulatedhighpressuresupply.

Whereoilanddirtinthegassupplyareaconcern,gasfiltersshouldbefittedtopreventblockageoftheboilergasvalve.

NB:Gasheatingmustnotbeusedwhilstdrivingyourvehicleunlessasafetyshut-offdeviceisfittedtothegassystem.Currentlocalregulationsmustbeadheredto.

5.5.1 FlueTheburningofLPGproducesCO2(carbondioxide),anon-toxic,asphyxiantgas.

Exhaustfluegascancausepossibleburnsandpoisoning.Avoidinhalingexhaustfluegas.

imPOrTaNT!Donotpositionawnings,tentsorotherenclosuresaroundtheflueterminal.

imPOrTaNT!Donotobstructtheflue.Becarefulnottofloodthefluewhenwashingthevehicle.

imPOrTaNT!Airissuckedintothecombustionchamberviatheairintake.Thegasheatingmustnotbeusedwhenrefuellingthevehicleattheservicestationorotherfuellingfacility.

Airsupplyisessentialforcleancombustion.Theairintakeislocatedintheflueterminal.Forbestperformance,theflueterminalshouldbewellvented.Ifleavingthegasheatingunusedforaperiod,ensuretheflueterminaliscoveredtopreventpestanimalsnestingintheflue.

6. maiNTENaNCE

Thereisnomanufacturer’sservicerequirementfortheAlde3020CompactHEboileritself.Currentlocalregulationsmustbeadheredto.Theinstallationoftheboilershouldbeinspectedannuallyforgassafety.

LPGhosesshouldberegularlycheckedforsignsofdamageandshouldbereplaced,atmaximum,after3yearsofuse.

Bleedairfromthesystemwhennewlyfilled,whenthevehiclehasbeenstandingunusedforaperiod,andbeforedepartingonholiday.

Thefluidlevelintheexpansiontankshouldbeabout1cmabovethemiNmarkwhencool.Theheattransferfluid(HTF)shouldbetoppedupifbelowthislevel,topreventabreakincirculation.OnlytopupwithcompatibleHTF.

NB:NeverleavethesystememptyofHTF.

FailuretomaintaintheconditionofHTFmayresultinfrostand/orcorrosiondamage,andisnotcoveredunderwarranty.

imPOrTaNT!AlwaysreplacetheHTFinaccordancewiththeantifreezeproduct’slifespan.Ifinanydoubt,replacetheHTFafter2years.

Whenthehotwatercylinderisincontinuoususe,itshouldbedrainedandrefilledonceamonth.Thisrecreatestheaircushioninthehotwatercylinderthatabsorbspressuresurges.

TheAldecontrolpanelrequiresnomaintenance,otherthancleaningofthescreenasneeded.Useamicrofibreclothtocleanthetouchscreen.

Panelradiatorsandtowelrailsshouldberegularlycleanedwithaclothandmulti-purposecleaner.

Whenshutdown,thesystemhasanormaldrawonthe12Vleisurebatteryofapproximately60mA.

6.1 Winter

Whencampinginthewinter,alwaysensuretheflueterminalremainsunobstructedbysnowandice.Extensionsforroofflueterminals,andcondensatespoutsforsideflueterminalsareavailablefromAlde.

Checkthestrengthoftheheattransferfluid(HTF)withahydrometerand/orrefractometer.Itshouldmeasure50%ethyleneglycolantifreeze,or-35– -37°C.

Thecentralheatingcanstillbeusedwithnofreshwaterinthesystem.Theairinthehotwatercylinderisheatedbutnodamagecanresult.

Ifcampingintemperaturesbelow-10°C,considercarryingsparepartsintheeventofanemergency.Alderecommendsa12Vcirculationpumpfortheexpansiontank(withcabling),aPCB,and4–5litresofreadytouseantifreeze.Thesesparepartsshouldbekeptwellinsulatedandinthewarmestpartofthevehicle;forexample,inthewardrobe,neartotheexpansiontankpipes.

imPOrTaNT!Alwaysdraindownandcompletelyemptythehotwatercylinderwhenthereisriskoffrost,unlessthevehicleisexplicitlystatedtobeself-winterisingbythevehiclemanufacturer.

TiP!Airthevehicleoverwinterwithoutwearingoutthelighterdutypump.UseDelayedStart/CycleontheAldecontrolpaneltoautomaticallyheatthevehiclefor24hours,onceaweek.

Ifstoringthevehicleforwinter,ensuretheflueterminaliscoveredtopreventpestanimalsnestingintheflue.NB:ConsiderremovingtheAldecontrolpaneloverwinter,ifthevehicleistobekeptinstorageandissusceptibletodamp.

Ifusingthelighterduty12Vcirculationpumpintheexpansiontank,donotleavethecentralheatingonoverwinter,evenwithalowdesiredtemperatureset.

7. CONTrOL PaNEL

TheAlde3020CompactHEcontrolpanelhastwohard buttonsandanon-capacitive,colourtouchscreeninterface.Thesoft buttonsdisplayedonthescreenareoperatedbytouchingthescreenwithyourfinger.

7.1 Starting the system

1. Boththecontrolpanelandboilerareoff.2. Tostartthesystem,pressthePowerbuttononthecontrolpanel.TheSplashScreenis

displayedandgreenLEDislit.Theboilerwillnowstartwiththepreviouslysavedsettings(factorysettingsbydefault).

Thesystemwillnowbedrawingvariable0.1–1.5Aofcurrentfromthe12Vsupply.

7.2 Standby Screen

TheStandbyScreenisdisplayedaftertheSplashScreen.Thisscreencontainsusefulinformationaboutthestatusofyourheatingsystem.
