16

Energy and water consumption

– Make use of the maximum load thatthe wash program can accommo-date.This will keep the energy and waterconsumption to a minimum in relationto the size of the load.

– When smaller amounts of laundry arewashed, the washing machine’s au-tomatic load control system will re-duce the amount of water and energyused.

– Use the Express program for small, lightly soiled loads.

– Modern detergents make it possibleto wash at lower temperatures (e.g.,70°F/20°C). Using the correspondingtemperature settings will save energy.

– To maintain the hygiene of the ma-chine, carry out a hot wash (above60°C) at regular intervals. The indi-cator will come on to remind you tocarry out a hot wash.

Detergent consumption

– Do not exceed the amounts of deter-gent recommended on the packag-ing.

– Adjust the dosage to the level of soil-ing of the laundry.

– Reduce the amount of detergent withsmaller loads (approx. ⅓ less thanthe amount recommended can beused when washing a half load).

When drying with a tumble dryer

Select the highest possible spin speedfor the wash program to save energy inthe subsequent tumble dryer cycle.

1. Prepare the laundry

17

Empty all pockets.

Damage due to foreign objects.Nails, coins, paper clips, and so oncan cause damage to garments andcomponents in the machine.Check the laundry before washingand remove any such foreign ob-jects.

Sort the laundry

Only wash items that are labeled ma-chine washable by the manufacturer. Most garments have a fabric care labelin the collar or side seam.

Sort the laundry by care label andcolor.

Tip: Dark fabrics often bleed the firstfew times they are washed. They shouldbe washed separately several times be-fore being included in a mixed load.

Pre-treating stains

Badly soiled areas and stains shouldbe cleaned as soon as possible, preferably while still fresh. Stainsshould be carefully dabbed off usinga soft, colorfast cloth. Do not rub!

Tip: Stains (such as blood, egg, coffee, and tea) can be pre-treated using somehandy tricks which can be found in theMiele guide to laundry care. Pleasecontact Miele directly or submit a re-quest via Internet page to obtain orview a copy of this manual.

Damage due to solvent-basedcleaning agentsCleaning agents containing benzine, stain remover, etc., can damageplastic parts. When pre-treating a stain, make surethat plastic parts do not come intocontact with cleaning agents.

Risk of explosion due to solvent-based cleaning agents. When using solvent-based cleaningagents, an explosive mixture maydevelop.Never use solvent-based cleaningagents in the washing machine.

General tips

– Curtains: Remove any lead weightsor strips before washing.

– Loose bra underwires should be re-moved or sewn in place before wash-ing.

– Close zippers, hooks and eyelets be-fore washing.

– Comforter covers and pillowcasesshould be fastened to prevent smallitems from rolling inside of them.

Do not wash items with the sym-bol on the fabric care label.

2. Load the laundry

18

Opening the door

Take hold of the door and pull itopen.

Check the drum for pets or foreignobjects before loading it with laun-dry.

The most efficient use of energy andwater is achieved when a full load iswashed. However, do not overload asthis reduces cleaning efficiency andcauses creasing.

Unfold the laundry and load loosely inthe drum.

Mixing both large and small itemsgives better wash results and alsohelps distribute the load evenly duringspinning.

Tip: Please note the maximum load fordifferent wash programs.

Closing the door

Make sure that no items are caughtbetween the door and the seal.

Shut the door with a gentle swing.

4. Adding detergent

21

Detergent dispenser drawerThis washing machine requires high ef-ficiency detergent. Adhere strictly to thedispensing amounts supplied by thedetergent manufacturer. The detergentsmust be marked with the following la-bel:

Filling with detergent

Pull out the detergent drawer and adddetergents to the compartments.

Chlorine bleach for removingstains or liquid detergent for thepre-wash

Detergent for the main wash andsoaking

Fabric softener, liquid starch, orcapsules

Tips for dispensing

Adjust the detergent dosage to the levelof soiling of the laundry and the maxi-mum load. Reduce the amount of de-tergent with smaller loads (e.g., reducethe amount of detergent by ⅓ whenwashing a half load).

Too little detergent:

– The laundry is not cleaned properlyand may become gray and hard tothe touch over time.

– Can lead to a build-up of mould inthe washing machine.

– Grease is not completely removedfrom the laundry.

– Can lead to limescale deposits on theheater elements.

Too much detergent

– Poor wash, rinse, and spin results.

– Causes higher water consumption asan extra rinse cycle is automaticallyactivated.

– A greater burden on the environment.

Dispensing aids

Use dispensing aids (e.g., balls) if theseare supplied with the detergent, particu-larly when using liquid detergent.

Page 22: Operating and Installation Instructions Washer - AJ Madison

4. Adding detergent

22

Using chlorine bleach

Frequently asked questions

49

Poor wash results

Problem Possible cause and solution

Liquid detergent is notachieving the requiredresults.

Liquid detergents do not usually contain bleachingagents. Consequently, fruit, coffee, and tea stainscannot always be removed. Use powder detergent containing a bleaching

agent. Use the appropriate capsule or add stain removers

to the compartment. Never put stain removers and liquid detergent to-

gether in the detergent dispenser drawer.

Gray, greasy particlescling to washed laundry.

Insufficient amounts of detergent were used. Thelaundry was heavily soiled with grease (oils, oint-ments). Use more detergent or use liquid detergent with

this type of soiled laundry. Before washing the next load, run a Normal 60°C

program with liquid detergent but without a load.

White residues whichlook like powder deter-gent are seen on darktextiles after washing.

The detergent contained compounds (zeolites) to aidwater softening which are not soluble in water. Thesehave ended up on the laundry. Try and brush off the residues with a soft brush

once the laundry is dry. In the future, wash dark textiles using a detergent

which contains no zeolites. Liquid detergents donot usually contain zeolites.

Use the Darks/Denim program to wash the textiles.

The water protection systemThe Miele water protection system pro-tects all parts of the washing machineand its surroundings from water dam-age.

The system consists of the followingmain components:

– the inlet hose

– the electronic module and drainageand overflow protection

– the drain hose

Inlet hoses

– Protection against the hoses bursting

The inlet hose can withstand pres-sure of more than 1,015 psi(7,000 kPa).

Electronic module and washing ma-chine housing

– Sump: Any leaking water is collectedin a sump in the base of the machine.A float switches off the water inletvalves, preventing any more waterfrom flowing into the machine andwater in the suds container ispumped away.

– Overflow protection: This preventsthe washing machine taking in toomuch water. If the water level ex-ceeds a certain level, the drain pumpswitches on and pumps the excesswater away in a controlled way.

Drain hose

The drain hose is protected by a ventila-tion system which prevents the washingmachine from being emptied com-pletely.

Water intakeThe washing machine can be con-nected to a portable water supply. Anon-return valve is not needed unlessrequired by building code.

The washing machine has ½“ (13 mm)pressure hoses with ¾” (19 mm) femalehose thread connections. If there is nowater hookup, contact a plumber to in-stall a connection. Make sure that thesealing ring is seated properly on thehose connector.

Replace the hose only with a genuineMiele hose, or with a hose able to with-stand up to 145 psi (10.000 kPa) pres-sure. The water valve connector mustalso be able to withstand 145 psi(10.000 kPa).

The bolted connection is underwater pressure. Open the water sup-ply slowly to check for leaks. Adjustthe rubber seal and the bolted con-nection if necessary.

To protect the inlet valve, the two fil-ters (one at the pressure hose / valveconnection and one at the inlet con-nection to the solenoid valve) mustnot be removed.

Maintenance

Only use a genuine Miele hose that hasbeen tested to withstand pressure of atleast 1,015 psi (7,000 kPa) should youever need a replacement.

A filter is located in the open end ofthe inlet hose and another in the in-take point to protect the inlet valve.Neither filter may be removed.

Water drainageThe suds are drained through a drainpump with a 3.2 ft (1 m) delivery head. For the water to drain freely, the hosemust be installed free of kinks. If required, the hose can be extended toa length of up to 16.4 ft (5 m). Acces-sories are available from your Mieledealer or the Miele Technical Service.

Drainage options:

1. Direct into a sink or basin:

Please note:

– Hook the hose over the edge andsecure!

– If the water is pumped into a sink,be sure that it can drain awayquickly enough. Otherwise there isa risk of water overflowing or ofsome of the drained water beingsucked back into the machine.

2. Connected securely to a plastic drainpipe with a rubber nipple (there is noneed to use a non-return valve).

3. Connected securely to a floor drain.

4. Connected securely to a sink with aplastic nipple.
