Overview Opera is an iconic Italian art form, and where better to enjoy it than the place of its birth? This new 15-day tour takes you from Venice to Turin, and includes core repertoire from the great Italian composers, from the bel canto of Rossini and Bellini to Puccini and Giordano’s verismo. Eight performances at world-famous opera houses – including Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Teatro Regio in Turin – are complemented by visits to the places where the composers lived and worked, allowing you to appreciate the history, and the personalities, behind the music. Our journey takes us across northern Italy, beginning with four nights each in Venice and Milan attending the very best of Italian opera and visiting leading museums and galleries. We take an excursion to Lake Como and visit Bergamo, Donizetti’s beautiful home town. The elegant city of Parma, where we spend three nights, is a great place from which to explore the ‘terre di Verdi’, where the composer was born and later returned. To end the tour, we spend three nights in Turin, increasingly regarded as one of Italy’s great cultural centres. Along the way, enjoy the beauty of northern Italy’s landscape, from alpine mountains to picturesque lakes and historic villages. Centrally located four-star hotels, many meals, tipping and best-available tickets to performances are all included. Walking tours and museum visits with an emphasis on music round out the program. Pre-performance talks will enhance your understanding and enjoyment.

Your tour leader For over 30 years, Robert Gay has presented music history courses for the Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Sydney. Over the same period he has designed and escorted more than 80 musical and cultural tours to Europe and America.

On tour, Robert will provide a thorough introduction to the performances you see, with detailed pre-performance talks and post-performance reviews. Robert’s approach to

music is multi-faceted. First and foremost, he links the music to the biographical, historical and social context in which it was created. Secondly, he explains in plain language technical aspects of the music – how the composer communicates through sound. Finally, as a trained singer who attends dozens of performances each year, he offers great insight into the qualities of the performances you see on tour. Robert’s enthusiasm for music is infectious, and his skills as an educator and tour leader are exceptional. Since 2010, he has led tours exclusively for Academy Travel.
