What are they Saying about Opera For Everyone?

• "The music was incredible. I think this is an experience everyone, not only kids, should experience. When you watch the opera, you get pulled into a whole different world. It's amazing! I just wanted to say thank you once more for bringing these operas to Hawaii and that I can't wait to go and see another one."-Student

• "These three operas were the first real pieces of theatrical arts that I've watched, and I have engendered a newfound interest for them. I will no longer be visiting movie theatres as frequently; instead I will be seizing every opportunity that I have to see a story unfold on stage."- Student

• "Every year I have a positive and joyful experience sharing opera with my students thanks to the many programs and support incentives offered by the Hawaii Opera Theatre." -Teacher

THE MAGIC FLUTE (sung in English)by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Prince Tamino opens the opera being rescued by Three Ladies, servants of the Queen of the Night. Through the Ladies, Tamino learns that the Queen’s daughter, Pamina, has been kidnapped by an evil sorcerer, Sorastro. Tamino, already in love with Pamina, undertakes a quest to save her, and the Ladies give him a magic flute to keep him safe from harm.

Papageno, the bird catcher, accompanies Tamino as they prepare to face Sorastro and his minions. Upon confronting Sorastro, our heroes learn that things are not always as they seem.

Where lies the truth? Will Pamina be saved? Find out in The Magic Flute!

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (sung in English)by Benjamin Britten

As Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream was written around 1594 and set to music by Britten in 1960. It portrays the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors, their interactions with woodland fairies and a duke and duchess. Taking place in a mythical Athens and an enchanted forest, there is a handsome fairy king, a bewitched queen, star-crossed lovers, a weaver who is transformed into a half-donkey, wood sprites, and elves. This work is widely performed around the world, and no wonder—it’s about the world’s most popular pastime: falling in love. But as Puck knows, falling in love can make fools of us all.

IL TROVATORE (sung in Italian)by Giuseppe Verdi

Set amid the Spanish Civil War, Count di Luna, commander of the Royalist Aragon forces, pines for the love of Leonora, a young noblewoman who has fallen in love with a mysterious man whom she met before the war. Disguising himself as a troubadour, the gentleman comes each night to serenade her. The jealous Count suspects that Leonora is in love with the troubadour, who is in fact Manrico, leader of the rebel forces. What seems a simple enough conflict spins beyond belief when an old story surfaces amongst Royalist troops: The Count’s rage is driven by the tragic murder of his infant brother, who was burnt alive by an old gypsy woman.

Featuring some of opera’s most famous melodies, including The Anvil Chorus combined with a story rich in action and complexity makes this is an epic Verdi masterpiece.
