I’d like to express a warm welcome to all our Open Studios visitors this November. The bi-annual Open Studios are the highlight of the SFSA calendar, the perfect event for our members to showcase their practice and work, and providing a great platform for networking opportunities and wider community engagement.

requirements so that developers can change office premises (B1a) to residential (C3) without needing planning permission, with no real guarantee for affordable housing, this action directly affecting the long-term security of 100,000’s of square feet of affordable studio provision across the capital. So to see the additional 140 studio spaces soon to be delivered is very good news for our sector.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the Open Studios and look forward seeing you again at our next opening in May 2014.

Best wishes,

Matthew WoodFounder / Director, SFSA

With thanks to our Partners and Associates

In March, SFSA entered its fifth year on Mellish Estate. We continue to work in close partnership with site owners Emafyl Properties and I’m delighted to announce the recent property acquisition by Emafyl of Unit 8, renamed Telegraph Building (see map). When refurbishment works are complete the building will provide an additional 140 affordable studios spaces on site. We plan to release the first phase of studios early 2014.

The additional provision of studios for artists within the project couldn’t be timelier. It’s not too strong a statement to say that our sector in London is facing some of its greatest challenges, with redevelopment and gentrification of areas continually having a flattening effect on mid and long-term artists’ studio communities with loss of their spaces, and Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State, introducing legislation to relax planning
