Opening the Doors of Opportunity

Alexis Shonta’ Mathis was named Corporate Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Moultrie/Colquitt County.

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has recognized outstanding young peo-ple for service to their Club and community, academic performance and contributions to their family. To claim the national title, Club members advance through local, state and regional competitions.

Mathis, a 10th grader at Colquitt County High School, has been a member of the Club since August 10, 2010. Mathis is among hun-dreds of local Youth of the Year winners across the country recog-nized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America for sound character, leader-ship skills and willingness to give back to the community.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Moultrie/Colquitt County host a variety of cultural education events through its Youth for Unity curriculum to broaden our Club members’ knowledge of the history and diversity of their communities.

Throughout the month, important milestones and surprising facts

about influential African American figures, inventors and barrier breakers were shared with club members.

BGC Moultrie celebrated Black History Month all February with events for teens and younger youth.

The Founder’s Banquet was a great success! We had nearly 200 friends and supporters of Boys & Girls Clubs of Moultrie/Colquitt

Founder’s Banquet 2015

County in attendance on June 11, 2015.

The guest speaker of the event was Colquitt County High School Football Head Coach, Rush Propst.

Along with a delicious catered meal, the event had several highlights including stories of alumni from Boys & Girls Club and its choir blessed the audience with music that

kept the room in smiles as they sang, “My God is Awe-some”. The children not only showed gratitude through

their songs, but also enabled our supporters to see what programs their donations go towards.

We are looking forward to having this banquet again next year and we hope that it will be even bigger and better.

Every month, Boys & Girls Clubs of Moultrie/Colquitt County recognizes two outstanding Club Members. These club mem-

bers are nominated by club staff based on who has had a good attitude, followed club rules, been kind and helpful in the past month. Being a good example around the club really makes the difference in being chosen.

S.M.A.R.T. Moves is an

important component of our

live healthy strategy, which

gives youth the tools needed

to lead long, healthy lives.

This program helps young

people learn about and avoid

some of the most immediate

threats to their well-being:

alcohol, tobacco, other drugs

and teen pregnancy.

The facts state the need for a

program like this:

Every day, approximately

4,000 youth ages 12 to 17

try their first cigarette.

Some 2,000 youth ages 12

to 17 abuse a prescrip-

tion drug for the first

time.

Before the age of 13, 25.6

percent of youth report

having their first drink of

alcohol.

Each year, there are ap-

proximately 19 million

new STD infections, and

almost half of them are

among youth ages 15 to

24.

Pregnancy is one of the

primary reasons female

students drop out of high

school.

In the state of Georgia,

alcohol is the drug of choice

among youth. Many young

people are experiencing the

consequences of drinking too

much, at too early an age.

As a result, Hearts for Fami-

lies, a non-profit

organization that provides

tools, training and education

to support parents, families

and communities at large

has teamed up with

Boys & Girls Clubs of

Moultrie/Colquitt County.

In just a short time in this

collaboration, Hearts for

Families has provided the

Club with workshops, train-

ings, and guest speakers ;

and together, we all have

put more emphasis on

teaching our youth the

dangers of alcohol before

they ever experience their

first drink.

O n July 7th-10th,

Boys & Girls

Club organizations from

all around the state of

Georgia had the unique

opportunity of sending

teenagers to Mercer Uni-

versity for the annual

Great Futures Teen

Summit. This opportuni-

ty is provided each year

to all organizations for

rising 8th-11th grade

students. The Great Fu-

tures Teen Summit is a

program hosted by the

Georgia Alliance of Boys &

Girls Clubs. Approximately

400 students gather each

year on a college campus in

the state of Georgia for a

four day, three night experi-

ence. The purpose of the

Teen Summit is to expose

middle and high school stu-

dents from around the state

to college life and career op-

portunities. These experienc-

es will have a positive im-

pact on the future prospects

for all of these students. The

Great Futures Teen Summit

is comprised of various edu-

cational, interactive and fun

sessions for all of the teenagers.

This year we took a group of 3

young men on the trip.

Ny’Quasian Tuff, Calvin Slade

and Marshall Jones took clas-

ses that focused on financial aid

for college, academic support,

time management and issues

facing today's youth. All of the

young men had a wonderful

time and will benefit from the

trip as they move forward in

their lives.

This summer, Boys & Girls

Clubs of Moultrie/Colquitt

County kicked off its sum-

mer camp with Summer

Beats.

such as: R&B, Gospel, Coun-

try music, Classical music,

Rap and Hip Hop, Salsa,

Rock ‘n’ Roll and Reggae

were some of the music dis-

cussed.

As summer camp came to an

end, club members not only

enjoyed the different dance

moves, they discovered how

dancing can be fun and a

perfect way to be and stay

fit. Camp ended with a mu-

sical talent show. Members

showcased their emotions

and ideas through song and

dance.

For two months, club mem-

bers were introduced to

many genres of music. Each

week, members explored a

genre of music. They trav-

eled back in time to the

origin of the music. Members

discovered that music is

found in every known cul-

ture, past and present, vary-

ing widely between times

and places. A culture’s music

is influence by all other as-

pects of that culture, includ-

ing social and economic or-

ganization and experience,

climate, and access to tech-

nology. Genres of music

MAKE the PROMISE

BGCA launched its Great Futures Campaign,

a bold initiative to transform the Boys & Girls

Clubs Movement with a vision for every teen

member graduating on time, college or career

ready. BGCA seeks to help Clubs close the

gap between the 97% of Club teens who expect

to graduate and 78% of Club teens actually on

track to graduate. When 1 out of 5 teens drops

out of school each year, we have a responsibil-

ity to serve more teens, more often, to ensure

more graduates and improve the future out-

look for the nation and our communities.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Moultrie/Colquitt Coun-

ty has been selected by the Taco Bell Founda-

tion as a recipient of a Graduate for Mas

grant. The Club will collaborate with BGCA

and Taco Bell to provide tools and resources to

teens while tracking their progress towards

graduation and life goals. The Graduate for

Mas platform challenges America’s teens to

make a personal pledge to graduate high

school. In return for their commitment, teens

will receive resources and rewards to keep

them on track and diploma bound.

Boys & Girls Clubs of

Moultrie/Colquitt County focuses on the improvement of the health

and well being of the children it serves. The snacks and meals are nutritionally-balanced and allow

kids to get the most from its

enrichment program.

By the time children come to the

Club it may have been 3-4 hours since their last meal, making it

difficult to concentrate or learn.

Teaming up with Bright from the Start, our students continue to thrive even after the school bell

rings.

The Club announced its sponsor-ship with the feeding program in

February 2014. The feeding sites were at the Club, Friendship Baptist Church and Northgate Apartments.

In 2015, Boys & Girls Clubs of

Moultrie/ Colquitt County extend-ed its feeding service to Moultrie

Housing Authority, Forest Creek Apartments and Packer Villas Apartments. During the after-

school program, dinner and a healthy snack are prepared at the

Club. In the summer, the Club prepares breakfast and lunch eve-ry day of the week excluding holi-

days at no expense to the sites mentioned earlier. Since 2014 to present, Boys & Girls Clubs of

Moultrie/Colquitt County has

served 98,538 meals and snacks.

In accordance with Federal law

and U.S. Department of Agricul-ture policy, this institution is pro-hibited from discriminating on the

basis of race, color, national origin,

sex, age, or disability.
