WORKSHOP ON SCHOOL LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT IN ASEAN COUNTRIES

By Siti Marlina Haji Md Ali The one day workshop was held on 10 June 2015 at Srinakharinwirot University,Bangkok, Thailand. It was jointly organized by the Thai School Library Club of the Thai Library Association, the Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Humanities, Srinakharinwirot University and the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL). School libraries in ASEAN countries are at the various stages of development. With the establishment of the ASEAN Community 2015 and the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement and many other developments in the region, it is important that school libraries be given due attention, for they represent the base for the development of an information literate community. Objectives:

To gather information on the current status of the school libraries in the ASEAN countries, and their development plans.

To create awareness of international, regional and ASEAN-level developments that have implications on the development of school libraries.

To examine strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities in the respective countries and explore areas off collaborations among the ASEAN countries in the development of school libraries.

Five Brunei librarians participated in the workshop while Siti Marlina Haji Md. AIi, Mazalina Hifni, and Muhd Hafizuddin Abu Hasrah, presented the Brunei country report. The workshop gave us some idea HOW to further develop school libraries in our country as we see deficiencies in our school libraries. However, through knowledge shared with other countries we can change the reading culture from an early stage. In the evening we enjoyed Thai food and culture on the White Orchid river cruise.
