Transcript of OPENING NIGHT SPIRIT OF THE SEASON CHAMBER PLAYERS … · in Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F; and...
led by Larry Rachleff, our Music Director and Walter Kris Hubert Professor of Orchestral Conducting, will showcase Professor of Piano Jon Kimura Parker as soloist in Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F; and Ravel’s Daphnis & Chloe, Suite No. 2 and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 39.
We are delighted to welcome Michael Heaston, our new Professor of Opera and Director of Opera Studies with the presen-tation of Francesco Cavalli’s La Calisto, on October 31, November 2 and November 4. The performances will be conducted by guest Gary Wedow and represent a collaborative effort between the School’s opera and cham-ber orchestra programs. The recently conceived Shepherd School Chamber Players enter their second year. This unique initiative features the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra arranged in smaller ensembles of six or more musicians in a new format comprised of three consec-utive, hour-long concerts interspersed with audience receptions. The Shepherd School is the only American educational institution to devote four weeks of each semester to prepar-ing such a program, affording our students the opportunity to finely-tune repertoire not typi-cally explored in a chamber orchestra setting. The performances/receptions will take place on Thursday, November 29. The highly successful “Sharing the Spotlight” series comprised of performances pairing faculty with students enters its fifth concert season. Hearing our gifted young students perform alongside their teachers is particularly gratifying so I urge to you take special note. We look forward to seeing you repeatedly this concert season at several of our not-to-be-missed performances. Your presence and personal support mean a great deal to us – our most sincere thanks!

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Dear Friends,
It is that time of year when stu-dents and faculty return to campus, school begins and our concert schedule commences in short order. The fall semester is always exhilarating and the 2018-19 academic year will comprise yet another season of extraordi-nary concerts at The Shepherd School of Music. I encourage you to mark your calendars now and plan on joining us often. Please note when reviewing your cal-endars that all of our large ensemble performances – the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, the Contemporary Ensemble, our operas and the Rice Chorale will have a 7:30pm start time. This change stems from the feedback we received in last year’s sur-vey of our audience/patrons. We believe this will encourage even greater attendance at these always-popular performances. I’m delighted to report that construction of our new music building continues apace. With a targeted completion date of fall 2020, the new building, connected by a plaza with Alice Pratt Brown Hall, will form the Rice University Music and Performing Arts Center. The centerpiece of the facility will be a beautiful and intimate 600-seat theater with rehearsal halls, practice rooms and fac-ulty studios. With its European-style design, unique configuration and generous orchestra pit for musicians, the new building will be the first theater of its kind among U. S. univer-sity and conservatory facilities - a hallmark venue to welcome patrons in the Houston community. The fall season begins with our annual homage to the victims of 9/11. The Rice Chorale, under the direction of Thomas Jaber, Professor and Director of Choral Activities will perform Mozart’s monumental Requiem. The Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra kicks off its season on September 30 with a program featuring Rossini’s Overture to The Barber of Seville, conducted by Shepherd School graduate student in orchestral con-ducting Joshua Hong; the evening will also include Ives’ Three Places in New England and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in F Major, Op. 93. The Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra’s opening performances on October 4 and 5
