Closing the Gap

The heart is a vast and cavernous place, filled with all sorts of exquisite things. There is also, perhaps prominently so or perhaps not, some manner of junk and refuse—often ig-nored and in the hope that it might just go away. But there it remains, forgotten and moldering. There is a gap between the good intention and the skewed response. Between a willing-ness to die for Christ and the refusal to die to self. Between a profession of love of neighbor and our irritation with the stranger who incon-veniences our schedule. Between compassion for sad images on the TV screen and avoiding the beggar at the red light. St. Paul cries out, “I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do.” (Rom 7:15, 19) The only answer to this dilemma is growth in a life in Christ. Fortunately, our Lord has provided a roadmap to discipleship. He tells us, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me” (Mk 8:34). “To deny oneself” means to let go of self-absorption, moodiness, grumpiness, ego-centeredness, preening, seeking for attention or places of honor, and the need to always have it our way. “To take up our cross” means to accept the daily inconveniences, the frustrations, the narrowing of one’s life for the sake of another, to bear burdens without complaining, and to accept inconveniences imposed by others. “To follow me” means to be a follower of Je-sus, and to make Him the center of our lives and the rising sun of our horizon. It means to turn away from the glitter of the world, to sub-mit to His commandments, to seek His will in all things, to trust in His sure and providential guidance, and to be faithful to the vocation and mission He has given us. In all these things, no matter what our suc-cesses or failures have been in following Je-sus, there is one certainty: we are not alone. Isaiah tells us, “The Lord God is my help… He is near.” (Is 50:7-8) The Lord is near. He wants to meet us in those places of struggle, those areas of unforgiveness of others, those places where we have been wounded. He wants to bring healing but also to reside there within us, making His home there as our friend, confidant, and lover. The gap is closed between the inner and outer, between the intention and the deed, and between love of God and love of neigh-bor. The will begins to be healed and unified into the mind of Christ. Even in darkness or absence, our great joy and consolation is that in all things, the Lord is near; so very near.

St. Robert’s Prayer Garden

One secret to planting a garden is being able to substitute plants when something isn’t available. The original design for the center annual bed this year was envisioned with a large border of a mint green leafy short perennial. When that was unavailable, we substituted this hot pink annual instead, which has been stunning all summer long. The key to gardening is flexibility!

Who among us hasn't wondered about how much is enough? How many times do we need to forgive? How much of the goods of this earth do I need to have? How generous am I able to be? The parables Jesus uses often shock our attention and give us a rich fruit for reflection.

These days, the news stories are centered on war and dis-asters, and on divisions and conflicts. We are not always aware of the scope of the human tragedy that goes on in our neighborhoods, in our cities, in our world. Many people on the earth suffer in so many ways - from dire poverty, from years of wars, and from ecological policies that leave the earth in trouble and people worse off. We can see stories of pain and suffering on the other side of the world and we feel it here. We might be filled with horror and compassion and fear. Insecurity, powerlessness can bring us to our knees and to the Lord. This week's readings help us with continu-ing reflection that can guide our integration of a confidence in God's love and mercy. One of the great things that any tragedy brings forward is examples of great heroism and generosity. We also know that the human spirit can be tempted to the worst things im-aginable. But, when we see people sacrificing their own lives to help others or showing with their generosity and passionate care how deeply they value human life, it lifts our own spirits and helps us be more generous and free. We could ask the Lord this week to help us assess what we really need. Do riches become a trouble for us? Do anxie-ties and the pleasures of life choke my reception of the Word? Can we ask for the desire to walk through our days with trust in Jesus' power to heal, to bring what is dead to life? Each of us can make this daily desire request and re-flection very concrete. And, as we prepare for the weekend, we can begin reflecting on how happy I am that God is mer-ciful and generous, even toward those that I don't think “deserve” it. As we begin each day with a desire, we can end each day with gratitude for what we received. https://onlineministries.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/Prayer/B2-OT-24.html

DAILY PRAYER THIS WEEK SAINT OF THE DAY

St. Robert Bellarmine

October 4, 1542 - September 17, 1621 When Robert Bellarmine was ordained in 1570, the study of Church history and the fathers of the Church was in a sad state of neglect. A promising scholar from his youth in Tuscany, he devoted his energy to these two subjects, as well as to Scripture, in order to systematize Church doctrine against the attacks of the Protestant Reformers. He was the first Jesuit to become a professor at Louvain. His most famous work is his three-volume Disputations on the Controversies of the Christian Faith. Particularly noteworthy are the sections on the temporal power of the pope and the role of the laity. Bellarmine incurred the anger of monarchists in England and France by showing the divine-right-of-kings theory untena-ble. He developed the theory of the indirect power of the pope in temporal affairs; although he was defending the pope against the Scottish philosopher Barclay, he also incurred the ire of Pope Sixtus V. Bellarmine was made a cardinal by Pope Clement VIII on the grounds that “he had not his equal for learning.” While he occu-pied apartments in the Vatican, Bellarmine relaxed none of his former austerities. He limited his household expenses to what was barely essential, eating only the food available to the poor. He was known to have ransomed a soldier who had deserted from the army and he used the hangings of his rooms to clothe poor people, remarking, “The walls won’t catch cold.” Among many activities, Bellarmine became theologian to Pope Clement VIII, preparing two catechisms which have had great influence in the Church. The last major controversy of Bellarmine’s life came in 1616 when he had to admonish his friend Galileo, whom he admired. He delivered the admonition on behalf of the Holy Office, which had decided that the heliocentric theory of Copernicus was con-trary to Scripture. The admonition amounted to a caution against putting forward—other than as a hypothesis—theories not yet fully proven. This shows that saints are not infallible. Robert Bellarmine died on September 17, 1621. The process for his canonization was begun in 1627, but was delayed until 1930 for political reasons, stemming from his writings. In 1930, Pope Pius XI canonized him, and the next year declared him a doctor of the Church. Reflection The renewal in the Church sought by Vatican II was difficult for many Catholics. In the course of change, many felt a lack of firm guidance from those in authority. They yearned for the stone columns of orthodoxy and an iron command with clearly defined lines of authority. Vatican II assures us in The Church in the Modern World, “There are many realities which do not change and which have their ultimate foundation in Christ, who is the same yesterday and today, yes, and forever” (#10, quoting Hebrews 13:8). Robert Bellarmine devoted his life to the study of Scripture and Catholic doctrine. His writings help us understand that the real source of our faith is not merely a set of doctrines, but rather the person of Jesus still living in the Church today. Saint Robert Bellarmine is the Patron Saint of Catechists and Catechumens.

In today’s Gospel Jesus says “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” The cross of Jesus and the crosses of his members can evan-gelize us: the sick, who bear illness with courage; the grieving, who hope against hope; the dying, who clearly trust in the resurrection; the suffering of our poor brothers and sisters who are hungry and homeless, but who still trust in God’s love. Is there a neighbor or friend who is in temporary need because of a loss of a job or illness? Leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul - we want to help. 402-779-8499

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Heart of a Child Ministries needs volunteers to wrap babies either at your home or in a group setting. In preparation for our upcoming live ultrasound, school presentations, we will be wrapping our 11-week-old baby models in fabric and attaching a Scrip-ture and name card to each baby (photo below). These babies are then given out to the students at the end of our presentations. Join us on Sunday, September 12 from 1:00-4:00 at St. Robert Bellar-mine in the Community Room for this fun, family friendly activity for all ages. This project is great if you need confir-mation service hours, a fun, family pro-ject, or simply just want to help. All children who participate can take home their own baby. Young children love to pick out the fabric color, while older siblings and parents wrap. Cookies, refreshments, and all supplies are pro-vided. We need 500 babies wrapped by Friday, September 24
