ONLINE STUDENT SUPPORTS

1. Integrity Matters App

Screenshot of University of Waterloo Integrity Matters App website at https://uwaterloo.ca/academic-integrity/about-office-academic-integrity/foundations-academic-success/integrity-matters-academic-integrity-research-study

The Integrity Matters app developed by the University of Waterloo with the support of eCampus Ontario provides strategies for students and help them understand how to incorporate integrity in their academic life.

The app includes in case scenarios for each value (honesty, fairness, responsibility, respect, trust, and courage) and at the end of each scenario, students are given a choice of answers to select which reflect their decisions. Once the decision is made, feedback is given to help guide them toward a path of integrity.

Note on eBadges: the eBadges are currently available to students enrolled at the University of Waterloo. If you have any questions how to implement this tool into your subject, please contact me at [email protected]

2. The Learning Portal

Seneca’s Learning Centers provide workshops and one on one sessions for students to help develop their academic skills. However, not all our students have time or the opportunity to attend sessions they need.

The Learning Portal, develop by College Libraries Ontario, “provides shared access to resources from all Ontario Colleges” (The Learning Portal).

Modules include videos, printouts as well as quiz and scenario-based exercises to help students develop skills they need to succeed at Seneca.

Implementing a link to this online resource in Blackboard and your email signature will prove helpful for students outside of school hours.

To browse the website yourself to what you can provide to your students, click on the link beneath the image.

AskON is an Ontario College Library online service that helps students with finding “ materials on [their] topic, answer questions about [their] library, or help [them] develop a research strategy.” As most students conduct research outside of class time, providing the link in Blackboard can help direct students to support they need to be successful on their assignments.

4. Seneca Learning Center Workshops & One on One Tutoring

Screenshot of Seneca’s Learning Center homepage at inside.senecacollege.ca/learningcentres/index.html

Seneca’s Learning Center provides workshops at each campus that reflect subjects in the program areas offered there as well as writing and research workshops. Becoming familiar with the workshops offered at your campus can help you direct students to the support they need. If you post weekly announcements or in the first class of the week, post information about the workshop offered that can help support the students in your class.

*NOTEWORTY WORKSHOP: English Conversation Club

The English Conversation Club is offered at all four main campuses. The workshop can help ESL students who communicate their ideas more effectively and feel less shy about speaking in class. As well, it can help them develop a social network which they can call upon for help if needed.

Counselling and Academic Services (CAS) provides a number of short term services for students to help them deal with the expectations of college life. Providing the students with the link in Blackboard can help direct students to the support not offered in other areas.

Noteworthy Services:

Some of the support they offer may be offered through the Learning Center, such as time management and note taking skills, but if a skills workshop is not provided, you can direct them to the CAS office at your campus.
