The New Wolsey Young Company presents
WOYZECKBy Georg Büchner
Adapted by Daniel KramerDirected by Rob Salmon
Woyzeck is the heartbreaking story of a young soldier’s descent into
madness. Inspired by real events, Büchner’s unfinished masterpiece
remains one of western drama’s most profound and moving explorations of
class and morality.Written shortly before his death at the age of twenty-three, Georg Büchner’s
Woyzeck is often described as the first ‘modern’ play. It tells the story of a poor soldier manipulated and abused by his
superiors, turned into a specimen for cruel experimentation at the hands of the medical establishment, and finally betrayed by the woman he loves, with
devastating consequences.Recommended for ages 13+

Welcome to the New Wolsey's…
What is it? Well I'll tell you! Open season is that unique time of the
year when we throw open our doors and hand over the keys to our buildings,
stages and facilities to amateur arts and community groups in the local area. It’s their chance to display what they’ve
achieved, celebrate their identity, and showcase their talent.
We have a fantastic season beginning with the brutal and heartbreaking Woyzeck
from the NW Young Company, followed by the return of Suffolk Youth Theatre with
the bawdy comedy The Country Wife, you can find out what children and young
people from all over Suffolk have to say about crime in Cops and Robbers and see
Shirley Valentine or First in the Field at the New Wolsey Studio.
There’s a chance to support Talitha Koum Trust, Suffolk and the annual Bangladeshi Community Day and if
that’s not enough what about joining the Ipswich Gilbert and Sullivan Society to
sing-a-long with The Mikado
or if you are aged 3 to 7 come and join our Storymaker and celebrate Suffolk’s Big Weekend. The Gallery Players bring us the complex and invigorating Rent or you could come and fall in love with The Pajama Game from Appeal Theatre Group. There really is something for everyone in the Open Season.
At the heart of this busy programme is the New Wolsey Open Day – what would open season be without the opportunity to go backstage and see how everything works. It’s going to be a fantastic day and I look forward to seeing you there.
If you want to be included next year then go to www.wolseytheatre.co.uk/openseasontakepart. Applications for Open Season 2011 will be available from the end of July.

FIRST IN THE FIELD
The Secrets of Orfordness, Bawdsey and Radar
A new play by Suzanne Hawkes
An Island of Secrets – rumours of a Death Ray – strange towers rising
above the Manor – flashing lights in the dead of night and the ever present
threat of invasion. Will life for the villagers of Orford and Bawdsey ever be
the same again? And will the boffins come up with a workable plan before
the Luftwaffe start their bombing raids in earnest?
Based on written records of the boffins and the oral history of those
who worked with them, this play dramatises the events leading up to
the Battle of Britain as seen through their eyes, and the struggle to develop
a working defence chain of radar stations before the threat of German
invasion became reality.Performances at New Wolsey Studio:
