‘Lets Think’ Lesson

Based on the Cognitive Acceleration in Mathematics (CAME) Programme

This approach has been shown to significantly raise achievement in mathematics as measured by curriculum attainment and Piagetian-type developmental tasks. In ‘Lets Think’ lessons, principles such as ‘concrete

preparation’ and ‘cognitive conflict’ guide instruction that targets conceptual misconceptions in children’s

understanding of mathematics. Students are given the role of active problem-solvers who need to work together to share

and build on each other’s ideas to overcome designed perplexity. The approach has a focus on student reasoning and explanation, and relies on the development of ‘learning how to learn’ skills. ‘Thinking lessons’ can be ‘messy’, and do not follow typical classroom norms of learning objectives,

differentiation by task and teacher praise.

We have had many pupils arrive in our Year 5/6 classes from abroad with gaps in their curriculum knowledge and new to English. Children follow the Year 5/6 curriculum at a level that is differentiated and appropriate for them. Some of the strategies you will see are speaking and listening

incorporating the use of subject-specific vocabulary and language structures and how these are transferred in writing. Most of our newly arrived pupils make excellent progress; those in Year 6 are equipped with a strong foundation for

Creative Curriculum We will look at ways that we are promoting pupil voice and engagement in a changing curriculum. In this session we will

discuss initiatives we have trialled this year including ‘Aldersbrook Curiosity Shop’, whole school ‘Big Question’ and how our topic planning and learning environment allows for

pupil voice in the curriculum. We will investigate our curriculum offer that promotes deeper learning skills but is

still fun!

Gross Motor Skills Sessions At Goodmayes, it appears that our children with learning difficulties have poorer gross motor skills than children

without these needs. In light of current research there seems to be a connection between difficulties in developing gross motor skills and academic achievement. The Gross Motor

programme was developed to address these needs. It is held in the mornings and supervised by TAs. We have found that it is not only improving the children skills, but there seems to

be a great improvement in their planning and problem-solving abilities. Some of the skills children will be working on in this session are motor planning a sequencing, postural control and a therapy ball used to reinforce and improve

body awareness.
