Understanding IFRS is one thing; however applying it in practice can be complex. The IFRS curriculum of the PwC Business School is designed to help you take on this challenge and will provide you with the insights that you require to successfully apply IFRS in practice.

For whom?

The IFRS curriculum is intended not only for professionals who work in an accounting, reporting or management role, but also for executives and directors of companies who have accounting knowledge and experience.

4 | IFRS curriculum 2016

1) Revenue from contracts with customers (IFRS 15) – 9 June 2016

A practical and interactive session highlighting the five steps of recognising revenue from contracts with customers. We will discuss the additional guidance from the latest amendments and how the new standard impacts on different industries and types of transactions.

2) Accounting and reporting for listed companies – 4 August 2016

Listed companies have a number of unique reporting challenges that include segment reporting, earnings per share, diluted earnings per share, HEPS, disclosures as well as relevant sections in the Companies Act and Listings Requirements. We unpack these requirements and highlight complex areas.

3) Leasing (IFRS 16) – 15 September 2016

“My company does not have operating leases!” – said no-one ever. The new standard will bring all leases on balance sheet by 2019 and will impact on key ratios such as EBITDA. We will talk through the requirements and practically illustrate how this may impact on your organisation’s balance sheet and income statement. We also discuss when leases are considered to be out of scope or exempt from the new reporting.

4) Insurance contracts (IFRS x) – 15 November 20162

We have scheduled this session in anticipation of the new standard being issued towards the end of the year. The insurance industry is an important and increasingly international industry and insurance contracts expose entities to long term and uncertain obligations. Today, the accounting for insurance contracts does not provide users with the information they need to meaningfully understand the insurer’s financial position, performance and risk exposure. In addition, IFRS does not address specific insurance issues and it is not obvious how insurers should deal with these issues under current IFRSs. Consequently, great diversity in the accounting practices of the insurance industry has developed over time.

Topic specific training solutions: Principles-to-practice

These four sessions are topic-specific and take an in-depth look at some of the more interesting and challenging areas of IFRS. In these sessions, we encourage open discussion and debate, while offering practical examples and solutions to common issues. These sessions are designed to help financial accountants and managers apply the requirements of IFRS in their company’s public and statutory reporting. Class sizes are kept at a minimum to ensure our participants receive added value from the interactive nature of the sessions.

2 This session is dependent on the new insurance standard being issued before November 2016
