Brookes and Seal andProtect Godley WTW Reservoir

The concrete surfaces of United Utilities underground storage reservoir at Godley WTW near Manchester, has been refurbished and sealed by Brookes. NCC provided assistance and support as their specialist materials suppliers.

The potable drinking water in the reservoir was potentially at risk from ground water, or other contaminants ingress. This was due to failed joints or cracks in the concrete structure. Brookes

and NCC had previously overcome similar problems at other WTW and reservoirs with an innovative solution.

The top soil was removed, the concrete surfaces repaired and the joints sealed with the SikaDur Combiflex jointing system. Then an ‘intelligent membrane’ system was applied overall using a loose laid single ply membrane over a network of flexible sensors. This can detect any leaks or punctures should they occur in the membrane system.

Basements now watertight with NCC and Quickseal

Quickseal Specialist Contractors have recently completed more than 4000 square metres of basement waterproofing using the Sika 1 Tanking System from

NCC. This is for the well known Buddleia Project in Liverpool.

NCC provided technical assistance and supplied all of

the prebagged Sika 1 material, plus all of the associated SikaDur Combiflex jointing system for the £186,000 specialist contract carried out for main contractor, Mansell.

Mansell’s selected the winning team of Quickseal and NCC on the basis of their previous good experience on other specialist waterproofing contracts, their competitive rates and their combined technical support.

NCC were also able to assist Mansell with the upgraded fire protection requirements on the project. They advised and supplied the project with Envirograph Passive Fire Protection systems.

The Buddleia Project is

currently refurbishing Grade II Listed Victorian Warehouses. This is to provide a focal point with employment and cultural infrastructure, for Liverpool’s black and minority ethnic communities, as part of an overall development by the Novas Group.

ProCo Print, SheffieldCleanliness with DurabilityThe ProCo Print factory in Sheffield is a busy print production facility, with both traditional litho printing and the latest digital printing equipment. This uses ‘state of the art’ machinery from Hewlett Packard, which operates in a strictly clean environment, with no dust or dirt allowed.

However the floors are also subjected to heavy foot, pallet truck and fork lift traffic, which are occuring almost continuously.

Therefore the factory had to have just the right sealed, easily cleaned and hard wearing flooring system, to prevent any future problems or costly downtime.

ProCo looked for the solution with Corze NE specialist contractors and consulted their materials specialists NCC, for advice and guidance in selecting the system.

NCC immediately saw this as an ideal application for the Sikafloor 261 system. This is a self levelling, epoxy resin based floor which is extremely hard wearing and easy to clean.

ProCo and the engineers from Hewlett Packard found this pefect. Jon Bailey at ProCo now says “We are delighted and would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone.”

Elastic Deck RefurbishmentPall Mall Car Park, Liverpool

Tynedale Specialist Flooring Contractors of Knutsford in Cheshire, have completed the installation of Sikafloor deck surfacing systems on the Pall Mall Car Park in central Liverpool. This is for Bruntwood Estates who are a commercial property development and management company, focussed on providing high quality office and serviced office facilities in the North of England.

NCC provided the crack bridging and UV light

resistant Sikafloor 350 Elastomeric system, for the top decks as they are subject to external weathering and the greatest thermal movement. The Sikafloor 261 system was recommended by NCC and used for the lower decks and the ramps, because of its excellent abrasion and wear resistance.

The clients selected degree of slip resistance was incorporated into the surfaces, then the final lane markings were applied.

Specialist UK Restorations Clean and RestoreElmhurst House in Stone, Staffordshire

Elmhurst House is a listed Georgian building, originally a private residence and now used as offices. This is also a prominent landmark

in the historic centre of Stone in Staffordshire.

Specialist UK Restorations Limited (SUKR) was asked

for advice and to repair some structural damage by crack stitching. Then, because of their clear expertise and professional service, they were asked to complete the full cleaning and restoration of the façades.

In conjunction with their specialist materials supplier NCC, SUKR decided to use Remmers Rotec ‘Whirljet’ cleaning equipment. This was for all sensitive surfaces, together with Remmers’ safe cleaning chemicals, followed by their stone and brick restoration materials.

This work also included restoration of lime renders,

stucco plasterwork and exposed timber surfaces. All with the technical and logistic support of NCC.

To replace and restore the decorative hand made terracotta tiled façades on Carlisle Street in Gateshead, the Council employed specialist contractors St Astier Limited.

As the works were at street level and above, it was essential that the adhesive and fixing mortars used be fast curing. This was to prevent their removal or damage by the public after the working day and additionally to protect the public from any danger of falling masonry.

St Astier discussed these requirements with their specialist materials suppliers NCC, who were able to recommend the use of Nitomortar PE. This is an adhesive, repair and fixing mortar based on polyester resins and produced by Fosroc International. It can be used for bonding, repairs, re-profiling and tiling, particularly in emergency situations and where

fast permanent repairs are needed.

The Nitomortar PE adhesive cures and hardens in two hours and it continues to cure at temperatures as low as 0oC, it also has minimal shrinkage and needs no primer on most substrates, including terracotta.

Following a successful trial, the works proceeded quickly and efficiently with no damage or injuries to the façade or the public.
