Letter From the chAirwelcome to fiveways 2017!

Welcome to our 36th year of opening! This is a year of change, with several houses taking a “rest” (including ourselves – we are having building work done), but three venues new to Fiveway are opening. Raspberry Surprise on Balfour Road featuring Martin and Gillian Brown, plus guest artists; the wondrous world of The Big Forest with fantastic felt creations; and Hummingbird Studio, which has been a feature of Fiveways for many years. They’re showing Bebe Bird’s ceramics, Bar Spurr’s painting and prints and more.

Last year I took a walk up to the two schools that are part of Fiveways, Varndean and Dorothy Stringer. They’re open on just one day, 20th May, but it’s well worth getting along. The variety and strength of the students’ work has to be seen (venues 17 and 18). And, as you walk around the trail, you can see a selection of Fiveways Artists’ work at the Open House pub (and enjoy a drink and lunch!) on Springfield Road near London Road station (Venue 19).

Do find time to visit all the other brilliant houses in Fiveways, as well as the independent houses that open in our area.

Thanks should go to our sponsors for ensuring that our magazine continues its success. Your help both financially and in terms of publicity is much appreciated. This year, Dan Mackey and Adam Johnson of 11 Rugby Road have taken over the production of the magazine. Thanks should also go to Nick Orsborn who ably produced the magazine last year.

Spring is coming and we hope to see you in May around our open houses!

The Fiveways Artists Group was set up in 1981 by artist Ned Hoskins, who, along with others, pioneered the concept of Open Houses - a free festival where people open their homes as galleries to the public. Starting with a handful of Open Houses (“Five at Fiveways”) in the 1980s, the Open House festival blossomed over the following thirty years, spreading beyond Fiveways to the rest of Brighton, Hove and beyond. It’s amazing that Ned’s idea sparked this well-loved Brighton phenomenon, and a concept that has spread far and wide supporting independent artists and makers.

The Fiveways area is unique in its number of residentartists living and working so closely together, andthe sheer volume of contemporary art, crafts andphotography available to the public during May isamazing. With such a strong sense of community and support for new and emerging artists, it’s hard not to feel proud of this massively creative area of Brighton.

With the publication of our magazine alongside the full AOH listings, we’ve been able to offer our sponsors a much better opportunity to feel more integrated withinthe whole Open House experience and visitors a more comprehensive trail listing for Open Houses in this area. It also gives residents an opportunity to connect with the local businesses who support us.

Last May, the Fiveways Artists Group celebrated having no less than three houses shortlisted for the Best Open House award, more than any other trail; Emily Boo and friends (this year showing in house 16), Brian Mander, and 11 Rugby Road where all chosen by the public. Brian went on to win the grand prize! We’re thrilled that Fiveways continues to be a hub of great Open Houses.

If you are an artist and would like to join the group andhave your own Open House, please look at our websitefor more information www.fivewaysartists.com orcontact our Secretary Eva Wibberley [email protected]

This year again “Art at 23” will bring you a cornucopia of talented artists, exhibiting a wide range of visual art, jewellery, crafts and textiles. We aim to create a joyful atmosphere for visitors to appreciate the variety of work on show.

Nature is a ceaseless inspiration for my figurative paintings, the wonderful light we have at different times of the day and the mood created by seasonal changes.

GUest artistsHiroko Lewis creates semi-abstract paintings using oil, metal leaf, patination and other media inspired by local areas of nature around Fiveways.

Aine Henson works in silver with semi-precious stones and freshwater pearls, she produces beautifully crafted individual pieces.

Nicole Koenig comes back with her vibrant and enchanting oil paintings.

Fay Green’s striking digital prints are finished with hand drawn details.

Cherryl Willis is a talented landscape painter who is coming back to exhibit here again this year.

Leah O’Faolain creates one-off striking contemporary jewellery pieces.

Anne French is well known for her Faux Inlay work. Her decorated pieces show the delicacy of her work.

Linda Heathcote is showing with us for the first time and her beautifully finished bags will attract your attention.

Martin Bentley is exhibiting his luminous figurative oil paintings again this year.

David Williams is a well known local artist, he brings us his evocative paintings inspired by his exotic travels.

Tony Freeman’s colouful seascapes and landscapes are much inspired by the Sussex coast and the moody sea.

This house will be open for the 10th year with the most varied selection of artists so far! Every corner will be crammed with beautiful treasures and walls full of stories. Fantastic animals, brilliant colours, jewellery of all kinds and glorious textiles will abound and more besides. This is your chance to meet chatty crocodiles and batty witches!

The walls will be shared by James Fenner and his powerful and thoughtful ceramic images and downstairs a delicious display of themed mirrors by Fiona Edwards welcomed new this year together with five other artists.

Also new John Alden, who is a wizard of mechanical engineering with fascinating automata. Another marvel is the exquisite and finely detailed birds made out of paper by Suzanne Breakwell. Also joining us is Maxine Michaelides with whimsical and unique lamps cleverly created out of a wealth of found objects and Frances Stephens with a range of most luxurious hand woven mohair throws created by weavers in Swaziland. Another addition to the house will be the wonderfully detailed ceramics of Stacey Manser-Knight certainly contributing to the story theme!

Marion Brandis has new designs including horses and wicked gulls together with her lovely tableware. Sarah Rickard is planning to fill the garden with stunning ceramic flowers and promises us hares and angels as well!

Returning from Shropshire is Jane Murphy with vibrant and bold slumped glassware. Maria Tilyard will bring cheeky animal cushions ingeniously made from recycled fabrics and Susan Thompson returns with cleverly recycled leather made into sumptuous stationery. Peter Brett’s famous chopping boards feature in many Brighton homes and there will be other goodies!

We are bombarded 24/7 with information, noise, images, opinion, news, fake news, and lies, leading to overload, detachment and sensory and emotional shut-down.

Our theme this year - The Spaces Between - is particularly apposite given recent events. Last year’s exhibition pre-dated Brexit, Trump and other now-embedded ‘conditions’.

We hope that our show, which is presented in a light, airy and uncluttered environment, will provide an antidote and some respite by encouraging deceleration and giving space to think.

In all forms of art - whether it be painting, sculpture, music or drama - the spaces in between are essential to the appreciation of the images, content or ’solids’ on either side. Likewise in historical or personal situations, a pause can allow the emotional space and time to reflect … and perhaps to reconnect.

We fear the lack of time and crave the space to think.

To help, we have assembled high quality work from a diverse group of artists.

We welcome five newcomers. Three of these are very well-established - Caddy Attewill (watercolour and mixed media), Rosalie Dodds (a member of the Contemporary Ceramics Centre and long term member of Fiveways artists group

- currently concentrating on stoneware), and Bryan Ellery (figurative sculptor in bronze and plaster). The other two are young artists at the start of their career - Tom Bradford (abstract acrylics) and Titus Barker (abstract lithographs and thread drawings).

We have three returning printmakers. Colin Moore, with the latest of his stylish and colourful landscape linocuts (which were particularly popular in our 2013 show); Janet Brooke with new well-observed townscapes of London and Brighton; and Kitty Cava, whose work explores line and colour as both abstract and representational. Both Janet and Kitty exhibited with us last year and were highly appreciated.

Plus, of course, the core group consisting of Adrienne Shields with her zany painted pots; Hilary Brown, with her new collection of elegant gold and silver jewellery and Jeff Soan with his new range of highly tactile carved and painted wooden creatures. Lastly, resident artists Naomi Sack (new driftwood art and acrylic paintings - sometimes combined), and Richard Hannay (a new collection of lead-work vessels).

And, as always, Plants for Parkinsons.

Martin Brown - semi-abstract painting based on imaginative spaceswww.martinobrown.artweb.comMy paintings this year create imaginary spaces and landscapes based on geometric and organic forms. The work is mainly about colour, texture and marks, subtle tones and the interweaving of different layers create an ambiguous space in the pictures.

Gillian Brown - Creative and transformational [email protected] Twitter: @ReviveDesBTNWhen a secondary school teacher I often ran enterprise workshops; one of which looked at using old materials others had thrown away in order to create new products. Now retired from the education world I have started using old materials that I have collected over the years to create new items. This includes old buttons, items of clothing, old picture frames, inherited gold leaf, discarded materials; the list is endless. I decided to teach myself to gild when I discovered some gold leaf whilst clearing out my father’s garage. I am inspired by artists who have used all kinds of materials to make new artefacts.

Fran Brown - playful fused glass [email protected] franbrown.co.ukFused glass panels, dishes, quirky birds, coasters and jewellery, inspired by colours, light, textures, the beautiful Morecambe Bay landscape and the domestic landscape of her kitchen.

Vicki Disney - Colourful and atmospheric abstract [email protected] www.vickidisney.comInspiration for me is the old, the unloved, derelict & unused. My intrigue is heightened with colours & textures of the every day things that we may take for granted; a moss covered wall is a hive of shades and patterns. Rusted metal is a rainbow of reds, golds and browns. To me this is beauty itself.

Rhiannon West - garden mosaic structuresFollowing a degree in Visual Arts at Bradford School of Art in the early 90’s, I became a fan of artists such as Hockney, Seurat and Chagall. Their use of interplaying colour, light and texture has always inspired my own work. Combining two of my greatest loves- gardening and mosaic art, I have worked on a series of mosaic glass, ceramic and mirror creations inspired by nature to enhance any outside space.

Flip Underdown - Beautifully layered glass formsI am a Brighton based glass artist, and have been working with kiln-formed glass and traditional leadworking techniques for more than 10 years.  This year I have been experimenting further with glass powders, and also combining fused and leaded glass in a glass-fusion fusion!

To celebrate our 7th year of opening, we present our most ambitious project to date: Made in Korea, an exhibition of contemporary Korean ceramic art displayed in the extraordinary context of The Ceramic House.

Made in Korea is a cultural exchange project between two contrasting nations - Britain and South Korea, and two contrasting disciplines - ceramics and sound art. Involving 20 artists from Korea, 5 from the UK, and encompassing 4 exhibitions, 4 concerts, and the launch of a unique audio guide, the project evolves throughout 2017 in Brighton, London, Stoke-on-Trent and Seoul.

The project starts this May at The Ceramic House, with an exhibition of Korean ceramics curated by Kay Aplin. An Arts Council funded research trip to Korea in 2016 enabled Kay to visit the artists in their studios and select work by a group of highly talented, established and emerging artists, whose work includes: vessels, tableware, sculpture, wall pieces and installation. Korea has a 10,000 year-long heritage of producing ceramics and the standard and execution of the work on display reflects this highly respected and valued tradition.

The exhibition transfers to leading Mayfair gallery, Sladmore Contemporary, in July. Two invited Korean ceramists will undertake a residency at The Ceramic

House during May and June and the work they produce will be exhibited at British Ceramics Biennial, Stoke-on-Trent, opening in September.

Kay Aplin will also create a new series of large-scale porcelain wall panels reflecting on her recent experiences in Korea. These will be displayed at Sladmore Contemporary, BCB and Mullae Art Factory in Seoul. A preview of the exhibition will be shown at Sladmore Contemporary as part of London Craft Week in May.

Follow Kay’s blog about the project www.a-n.co.uk/blogs/made-in-korea

The Ceramic House is unique in many ways; it is an unusual home, a spectacular showcase of Kay Aplin’s architectural ceramic installations, a gallery showing the highest standard of contemporary ceramics in a domestic setting and a venue for a variety of events. Launched in 2011, it was awarded Best Artists Open House 2013 and continues to inspire and delight everyone who steps inside.

This year I am delighted to welcome new artists Keith Pettit, Paula Clark and Sally Rose.

Keith works in both extremes of scale with his beautiful delicate woodcuts producing hand printed artwork and cards, to enormous expressive woodcarvings using a chain saw as his carving implement!

He will be demonstrating his various skills on the 14th, 20th and 28th of May so come along to see his work and method.

Paula Clark launches her new brand Cocoon & me . ‘Knits & Knots’ ........a collection of contemporary knitwear & modern macrame.

Sally Rose’s leather bags  have a simple elegance and her fabulously quirky fabric birds have funky feet and great character!

After a break away, I am pleased to welcome back Niki Calvert with her intricate beaded bracelets, bands and earrings, and my regular glass artist  Annie Mcmullan is always delighting us with her fused glass jewellery and garden pieces.

Linda Calvert’s porcelain lights have wonderful texture and visual fragility that sit beautifully in any interior. Linda takes her influence from nature, flora and patterns from sea and sand of which she often takes casts.

I am also delighted to welcome Harry Venning back again with his Radio 4 and Guardian cartoon heroine Clare of Clare in the Community! He will be delighting us with a talk, check our Facebook page for details and dates.

Holly Bell’s handmade functional ceramics have a wonderful tactile feel inspired by the shapes and colours of the Sussex sea and landscape

Chris Brooks loves the subjects of flora and fauna and is exploring further with their texture and form using glass details and recycled metal.

I, Polly, in the meantime am enjoying the challenge of expressing the amazing light and unreal turquoise of the Mediterranean Sea and the Mallorcan coastline. I am also currently Artist in residence at Glyndebourne Opera House to view work go to the Glyndebourne’s gallery website.

Open garden, cakes, teas and coffees.

TheBigForest is two silly artist makers Mr Rowling and Mr Craven. We began working in collaboration in 2012 brought together by our shared love of storytelling, British illustration from the 1930’s to the 1970’s, vintage toys, the joy of the seaside and a desire to make people smile. This is only the second year we have opened our front parlour for Artists Open Houses following our return from London and our first year as a proud member of Fiveways Artists!

So what can you expect to find in the Emporium this year…an eclectic selection of art for silly grown-ups and some work for kids too! We will be featuring our wood and illustration art boxes exploring seaside scenes from the past, Brighton Men cut out and dress dolls, fretwork Brighton folk and our beautifully detailed felt dogs. You will also find some of our felt animals, including the famous Brighton Mod Bear, each animal with a story to tell, and our cut out and make seaside greetings cards always make people smile.

This year we will also be featuring a pop up Artist each week; a painter, two illustrators and a wood carver.

This year we have a fabulous show for you with a house full of fantastical sculptures. I have invited Alan Williams to show with us as we have been making collaborative work for the last couple of years, and have come up with some exciting pieces for the festival. These will be on show in the house, and also in the front gardens leading up Havelock road to our house, so don’t forget to look out for these.

Frances continues exploring the plant world with her ceramic sculpture and will have new work fresh out of the kiln for this exhibition.

Alan forges, shapes and contorts found metal objects into wonderful creatures and mythical beasts, so if you haven’t seen his work before you are in for a treat. www.alanwilliamsmetalartist.com

Jane Denman has been working on dynamic, acrylic figurative paintings, and she has been creating a special large painting just for this show which promises to be full of colour. www.janedenman.com

Alice graduated just last year from Brighton university and her tempting ceramic creations explore food and ‘foodie’ culture. She uses an energetic palette and unique decorating techniques to create her playful works. Her gloriously gooey glazes create pieces which entice both the eyes and the tastebuds.instagram.com/alicestewardsonceramics

Charlie High is our favourite jeweller as her often botanical creations perfectly match this house. She makes bold silver jewellery with touches of gold and semiprecious stones. This year she has a new collection using beach glass from Croatia.www.charliehigh.com

A large, stylish pub located next to London Road station, The Open House hosts a gallery curated by the Fiveways Artists Group, exhibiting works by many of the group’s artists.

In addition to the Fiveways Gallery, there are two other bar areas, an upstairs performance space and one of the largest and most attractive pub gardens in the city. The delicious food, served daily from midday to 9pm, ranges from light bites to lunches to evening meals and uses fresh, Sussex sourced ingredients.

The pub is relaxed and childfriendly by day, and by night is lively and bustling, with occasional DJs, live music, theatre and improvised comedy.

Located in the heart of the Fiveways Art trail and only a 3 minute rail journey to the city centre, the Open House is both a great place to view original art and the perfect place to take a break from the festival trail. The friendly and welcoming Open House staff, very much look forward to hosting all lovers of Fiveways art at this year’s May Festival.
