• Changes the paradigm of publisher-controlled information
• Reduces the cost of textbooks for students
• Encourages faculty to keep the course materials current and relevant

• Time involved to find or create OER may be greater
• It is hard to sustain the quality of the materials over time
• The Creative Commons licenses for content is irrevocable

• Content needs to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards
• Students may not have technology skills or access
