Our KS3 JourneyØOur KS3 curriculum has been carefully designed to prepare students for GCSE study

without sacrificing their access to a diverse and exciting range of texts. ØOur text choices have been made to respond to the needs of our students

(empowerment of women, immigration, conflict and identity)ØAs far as possible, we have all year groups following a similar topic to encourage

discussion between year groups and to build knowledge and links year on year.

How Can I Support Reading?Ø Encourage your child to read every day, just 10 minutes can make an

immense difference!Ø Ask your child about what they are reading – all students are required to

have a reading book as part of their equipment.Ø Use the subtitles when watching TV and movies – this is a really easy way

to boost word recognition!Ø Show yourself as a reader – students are much more likely to read if they

see others doing so.Ø Share reading together.Ø Encourage the reading of newspapers.

Mathematics - Our KS3 Journey

ØAt Compass we follow a 5 year scheme of work supported by Collins Framework.ØWe deliver a 2 year KS3 course which merges seamlessly onto our KS4 course.ØWith the changes to the curriculum we have designed our lessons to prepare

students for the greater demand at GCSE and this is addressed very early on in Y7 and Y8.

Page 15: Open days Visit us this - Compass School Southwarkcompass-schools.com/wpcms/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/KS3...Open days Visit us this autumn! Open mornings 8:30 – 10:00 Thursday 14th,

How Can I Support Learning?

Ø Independent learning: Students must spend time outside of the

classroom to consolidate learnt matter as the research tells us that

only 10-15% of learning is retained whereas with independent

learning the stats rise to 50%

ØIndependent learning and revision should be an ongoing process for

all students and can be facilitated with the use of written homework

and online learning platforms such as MathsWatch and MyMaths

ØHomework is set every Thursday for Y7/8 students and should be at

least 30 minutes long.

Assessments

Students will be assessed each half-term on a range of different skills and teachers will feedback whilst taking into account any misconceptions which will be addressed in subsequent lessons.

Students can prepare for these assessments in a number of ways:ü Use their exercise book and previous marking (Improvement

Prompts)ü Use Mathswatch, Mymaths and YouTubeü GCSE Bitesizeü Make use of the Math Dictionary provided in our handbook
